~I killed my first demon by the age of nine. I knew I wanted to be a Spellmaiden by thirteen. I was destined for it, really, though it had taken 10 years , 9 failures and 17,520 hours of training and practice to prove it.~
The book starts with Josie Bell, a witch in the Victorian London. She is a spellmaiden, they work for the magic government and haunt down creatures that are a danger to humans.
Duke Lachlan MacKeane is a Lycan, Charming and impulsive, all England is infatuated with him, but everything changes when he is wanted for murder, a crime he didn't commit. But all London is on his tail, even a certain spellmaiden with a reputation of being infallible and very deadly. But what if they have a deeper connection than they thought? And what happens when they eventually find their ways to eachother?
This was an amazing read! It's an historical adult fantasy romance. The atmosphere of Victorian London was amazing and the world building was really interesting and we only explored a part of it! I love Josie Bell, she is a real badass and knows what she wants, she fought hard for her life but she needs someone to make her feel loved. Lach, your Grace, was also amazing, kind and sarcastic, their banter was also top tier. Their scene together could light up an entire city.
~His eyes narrowed and my lips twitched at the unexpected laugh that tried to bubble up and out of me at the look on his face. I felt his smile, saw it reflected in his eyes, a moment before he nipped my hand, producing a bewildering shiver which bolted down my spine.~
At first they don't want to have nothing to do with eachother, but something happens and they have to collaborate together, to unravel the truth😶.
Loved it, such a cosy but exciting read, can't wait to read the next book to know more of this world!
I recieved an arc in exchange for an honest review, thanks you so much for this opportunity!
Generally I don't care for first person stories and this is the first paranormal story that I've read. I was therefore very surprised as I found I enjoyed this active and creative story. Greatly detailed with enough history (London) location to keep me fully engaged. The main characters were witty, both strong and independent characters. Great imagery, suspense, magic, fun and lots more The secondary characters brought color and depth to the overall story as it crossed over both in class differences as well as human vs non human events. The story looks like the beginning of a series and it's one I plan to follow.
Thank you so much for the read! It was a absolute delight. Love reading enemies to lovers and this book just hit the spot!
Dive into the fantastic world of werewolves, witches, demons, faes and other mythical creatures. Each chapter needs to be read slowly to savor the unworldly realm where murder, mayhem, politics and power grab is just as normal as in the human world. Steamy, action packed and thoroughly enjoyable read.
I received an ARC from Netgalley and leaving my review voluntarily.
I fell in love with this magicall written enemies to lovers romance right away and could not stop reading it. A Spell for a Duke was exactly what I needed to read right now. It was wonderfully written and had all the feels-my heart melted a few times with Josephine and Lachlan.
This was a great historical romance with my favourite Trope enemies to lovers. I loved the story with the ups and downs and the characters were well thought out and had great personalities.
A funny fated mates mystery packed to the brim with world building.
While the pace can be weighed down by the world building, the humour and tension between the main characters makes for an enjoyable read.
The secondary characters were enjoyable and I found myself becoming invested in their plotlines as much as Josie and Lachlan's.
This is a HEA with future potential that leaves you wanting more (especially after that ending stinger!)
I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher for sending me a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I'm always fascinated when I find a new book that blends more than one genre within its plot. This is a historical romance with paranormal/fantasy elements.
This story follows Miss Josie Bell, a witch, tasked with finding and apprehending a rogue demon. This should be like any other day for Josie, except she's assigned to work with Lachlan Connor Daire MacKeane, a Lycan.
It's not that I necessarily disliked this book, it was more just nothing stuck out to me. I was intrigued by the book blurb, but the writing/characters didn't interest me much, and I ended up giving it 1 star, but just because I didn't enjoy it doesn't mean other readers will feel the same.
A Fun Read Not To Be Missed!
I love to read both historical and paranormal genres and I have to say this storyline covers both.
A fun action packed, sizzling read with an over arrogant Alpha Lycan and a very special and powerful witch.
The banter between them combined with the sizzling intense passion just sets the book alive.
Wonderful secondary characters compliment the storyline.
A page-turning read with a great HEA which leaves you wanting more!
Highly Recommended Read!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book is entirely different from what I would initially read. I was curious to see these two 'worlds' collide. However, I felt overwhelmed at the beginning and out of touch as there was a lack of background regarding this new world. I felt there was much to explain, but no additional details were given. The book's first part had a slow start for me, and then it got quite interesting.
This book's plot is different and, with the correct touch-ups, would make an excellent read.
I think that there is great potential in this book. There is a unique world that is built, the humor is there, and there are so many great characters that I adored (who doesn't love talking cats!). But I feel like this book is in great need of some editing still.
Generally, there are some just inconsistency issues that I couldn't ignore, but for me the biggest issue was the world building. I felt like the world/setting wasn't ever fully explained, which made what we did get overwhelming. For the first 1/3 of the book, I truly did not understand the world (can everyone talk to animals, Oh just a specific type a which, Oh except for cats?). I am all for low fantasy, but I still need to understand the specific nature of THIS story. I don't need how magic works, but I do need to generally understand what is an is not possible so I can enjoy the story and no be wondering if that weird thing was a clue or just how the world works. I don't think this was helped by the multiple POVs we get at the beginning, which then peter out to just the two by the second half of the book. If anything I would swap that - add in more POVs as the story goes for layering and suspense as needed.
Additionally, the blurb and some of the pacing was difficult for me. This is a more personal peeve - the blurb revealed about 50% of the plot which I know for some people isn't a huge deal, but I personally feel like it ruins the story a bit if I know all the next steps. It also made the book feel like it moved slow, since I was rushing to get to the part where I didn't know what would be next. After that point, it felt more like it has hit it's stride.
This book is like 80% there in my opinion. I feel like all of these problems can be addressed and fixed with editing, so I really hope that the author gets that support, and after that I eagerly await the re-write as well as more in this series (at least one more book was teased).
A very interesting story. I don’t think I have ever read a story with this many different paranormals. I found the first part of the story to be a little slow and not very interesting. Then, the story starts to get very interesting and suddenly I am pulled into the story. Lachlan and Josie are strong characters who have an explosive relationship which makes for great reading.. I enjoyed the story and would recommend it but there appears to be a continuation in the next story.
I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley and are voluntarily leaving a review.
A different genre than my usual read but I was attracted but the word Duke in the title.
Lachlan is the Lycan Duke with a complicated family history.
Josie is a Spellmaiden (witch) that is one half of the mutual attraction between the two with unknown consequences.
Initially wordy and lots of character plot lines to delve into but once past that, a fascinating storyline with steamy scenes.
