I found this one quite hard to get into. I really liked the premise but it didn't quite connect with me. It's a quick read though.

📚: The Remote Workers by Ivy Chase
⭐️: 3/5

The gist: Martha’s Vineyard in the off-season. Two travel bloggers. One dead body in the pool.

The good: You know when a book is so not good that it ends up being kind of good? Yeah, that happened. An incredibly quick read (like I read this in 90 minutes), perfect for a mindless beach/vacation/summer/brain candy book.

The eh: The plot is so thin that it barely exists. Also, I swear, if this guy calls his girlfriend “Hottie” one more time…

This was such a fantastic read! The idea of tracking down a suspect, and staying in one of his rental properties to look further into the case? Yeah, that's just a little bit unhinged. But such fun to read! I had to know more!

When you think of Martha's Vineyard, you think of higher class, rich kind of people. Andy and Lisa are vloggers, and pretty well followed at that, so they do fit the profile. But oh, the chase of characters, between all the personalities and the mysteries, there's a lot of drama.

I wanted to know if things were all connected, though I was pretty sure that they were. That this latest death happened in the pool of the place that they're staying at-that's owned by Max-further complicates things which was so great to read.

Watching everything come together was really fantastic! All the perspectives and all the information that they had came together to compile the picture of what had happened, and why, which was so great. It worked out so well, and it was a really well done mystery!

Loved reading this book and I'd love to read more by Ivy Chase!

Andy, my boyfriend and former hockey star, can’t fathom why I insist on spending the winter in chilly Martha’s Vineyard over the allure of Bali. He doesn’t know I’m determined to discover who killed my mother all those years ago. Balancing this investigation with our floundering travel vlog and a high-pressure tech job is no easy feat. Max Beaumont, a local big shot and my mother’s former lover, might have the answers. The private investigator I hired thought so too … before he quit the case. Thankfully, we’ve rented Mr. Beaumont’s ostentatious beachfront property during the off-season. I can dig deeper, even under the enduring disdain from locals who are distrustful of remote workers like us. With any luck, I’ll put our new landlord behind bars. Unfortunately, our idyllic retreat turns sinister when someone is found face down in our pool. Now we’re prime suspects, with jail looming as an unwanted addition to our itinerary. The premise sounded interesting but this book disappointed on more than one level. The plot was actually good but the unrealistic and juvenile dialog, the horrible characters (you won't like any of them) and silly behaviors was a constant distraction. If things had been tightened up a bit this would have been a 5 star.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

The Remote Workers by Ivy Chase is a compelling narrative that intricately weaves the elements of mystery and thriller genres into the fabric of remote work culture. The protagonist’s journey is not just about unraveling the truth behind her mother’s demise but also about navigating the complexities of relationships and trust in a digital nomad’s lifestyle.

The story unfolds on the chilly backdrop of Martha’s Vineyard, contrasting sharply with the warm allure of Bali, presenting a dichotomy between the protagonist’s desire for warmth and the cold reality she must confront. Ivy Chase does a remarkable job of portraying the protagonist’s determination and the strain it puts on her relationship with Andy, her boyfriend and former hockey star.

The plot thickens with the introduction of Max Beaumont, a character shrouded in wealth and mystery, and the former lover of the protagonist’s mother. The tension escalates when a body is discovered in the pool of Max’s ostentatious beachfront property, turning the protagonist’s world upside down and making her and Andy prime suspects in a sinister plot.

Chase’s writing is sharp and engaging, with a pace that keeps the reader hooked until the last page. The narrative is rich with drama, finger-pointing, and secrets that slowly unravel, leading to twists and turns that catch the reader off guard. The author’s skill in crafting a story that is both a personal journey and a thrilling mystery is commendable.

However, the book is not without its flaws. The overuse of the term “Hottie” to refer to Lisa, the protagonist, by Andy can be seen as a tad over-the-top and may detract from the seriousness of the narrative. Additionally, the characters are not particularly likeable which impacts readers connection with the story.

The Remote Workers is a novel that offers a fresh perspective on the life of digital nomads intertwined with a gripping mystery.

This book was full of drama and characters you wont like. I felt like they were a bit unrealistic and at times I felt the book was over the top.

The premise of this one was great. Two bloggers (Andy and Lisa) who get to travel the world and blog (vlog) about it. Lisa also juggles her 9-5 job remotely from these lavish locations. Throw in a murder mystery and it seemed just up my ally.

Lisa has a mysterious past, and wants to find her mother’s killer. When a job came up, staying in a mansion on Martha’s Vineyard that happens to be owned by the man she believes murdered her mother- Lisa convinces Andy to give up a trip to Bali to go to Marth’s Vineyard instead.

While there, a body turns up dead in the pool and Andy and Lisa quickly find themselves involved in the murder investigation.

There were enough twists and turns to keep my interest. Andy was super annoying with his pet names and always referring to Lisa as “hottie” and other names that were hard to imagine an adult male using. Their language was pretty juvenile and I never really got invested in the characters. This along with several plot holes left this one "just okay" for me.

Andy and Lisa, a couple who travel to glamorous destinations and document their adventures for their vlog, decide to forgo a trip to Bali in favor of spending the winter in Martha's Vineyard, Lisa's hometown. Unknown to Andy, Lisa is determined to uncover the truth about her mother's murder, holding Max Beaumont, her mother's former lover, as the prime suspect.

While staying in Max's rented mansion, their plans are disrupted by the unexpected discovery of a body in the pool, adding unexpected complications to Lisa's investigation. The author skillfully introduces plot twists and creates complex and unsavory characters. However, certain aspects, such as Andy's habit of referring to Lisa as "Hottie," and a lack of relatability in the characters, detracted from the overall appeal of the narrative. Despite an intriguing premise, the execution fell short for this reader, resulting in a 2.5-star rating.

Andy and Lisa are American travel vloggers who are trying to grow up their following.
While considering their next travel destination, Lisa received an invitation to an exclusive house in Martha’s Vineyard., which happens to also be her hometown.
This would be the perfect opportunity to uncover the truth about her mother’s death.

Whilst this is a very fast read, which was also quite enjoyable because of the few twists, I felt a bit let down by all the questions still unresolved (who killed Lisa’s mom and why? What really happened in Andy’s past?).
Also the way Andy talked got sometimes a bit on my nerves. Do people actually talk like this?

Anyway this was still a fun read.

This had short chapters with multiple POVs that were easy to follow but I could not stand all the dang pet names. Honestly, if i read “hottie” one more time I was about to pull my hair out. Personally I feel it was a little predictable but it did keep my interest so I was able to finish it in a few days.

Jail is so not going to be our next travel destination. Andy, my boyfriend and former hockey star, can’t fathom why I insist on spending the winter in chilly Martha’s Vineyard over the allure of Bali. He doesn’t know I’m determined to discover who killed my mother all those years ago.

I cannot imagine a more obnoxious protagonist. I wanted to strangle her the whole time. I want my life back.

Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.

This one started off strong got weak in the middle and then had a strong ending.

There were some points that I don't think were needed, two being I don't think the perspective of Crystal and Mrs. Beaumont. I think these two components added to the confusion in the middle. I believe this one could have been a stronger novel overall, we don't really see much investigation of her mothers disappearance and assumed murder nor do we see much character development in terms of background.

While this read was easy and I liked the ending the middle was a bit stagnant

Oooh this one was twisty! I really thought I had things figured out at least three times, and I was wrong every time. I enjoyed the storyline from multiple perspectives, it worked well in this novel. Overall, a very entertaining book.

A relevant story given the current travel vloggers out there! The couple gets enmeshed in a murder with a strong connection to the women's childhood. I didn't have this figured out!
