Upside Down by Danielle Steel is a perfect read for the beginning of the new year. It’s gentle romance sweeps away the dust of other books and all things annoying that have happened recently. It is two love stories, two May/December romances. A mother and a daughter. There are trials and tribulations, of course but there is much joy, as well. Ardith Law is a movie star, maybe not the biggest, but amongst the top stars. She is attending the Oscar awards ceremony with William West, her companion for the past twelve years. It was not a passionate romance, but a comfortable one, one she enjoyed. He was to leave in a couple of days to make a movie being shot in England. He was not as big a star as she was but he was well-known and well-respected with an impressive backlog of films to his name. She was both looking forward and not to the months without him. He had made a deal with the studio to provide her with an assistant during his absence. The assistant arrived bearded and frightening on a very large Harley. Ardith had pushed the panic button and the police came. It was an embarrassing error. Meanwhile, in New York, her daughter, Morgan, who was a plastic surgeon was with a patient, one who normally saw her partner, for a check on a gash in his chin. He was a famous newscaster and had run into some trouble in India several months earlier. The future was bright.
Steel writes the same kind of books every time. She is good at it. They are perfect reads. Especially if following something difficult or unpleasant. It is mostly third person narration, with some breaks into conversations. She draws a complete character; it is one of her strengths. She tells a good story of unanticipated love. There is love-making, but it is not graphic. She uses interesting characters and puts them into unexpected situations. It is no wonder she is such a well-known author and has best seller after best seller.

Great story about a mother/daughter relationship that needs to be repaired.
When Morgan’s boyfriend is being blackmailed she turns to her mom for advice. The mom that she barely talks to as their relationship has always been strained. Can these two women repair their relationship and learn how much they need one another?
Upside Down by Danielle Steel is about two couples where there is a large age difference. While I found the story to be easy to read, the storyline is predictable. The same details are repeated throughout the book (how many times do we need to be told about the age difference between the two couples, that Morgan resents her Mother, the unfaithful first husband, Josh’s loud motorcycle). The characters are cliched and lack development. I was not a fan of Ardith’s daughter, Morgan, or her older boyfriend, Ben. The pacing is mixed. I have read all of Danielle Steel’s books (I have been reading them since I was twelve), but this one is my least favorite. Upside Down is a story that does not require exerting many brain cells to get through it.
This book just left me feeling flat.
Ardith Law, two-time Oscar winner is 62 years old and a legendary Hollywood icon. When her boyfriend/actor Bill, who she's been with the last 12 years suddenly dies of a heart attack while on location, she's lost. She lost her husband, a famous director/producer when he died in a helicopter crash almost 30 years ago, leaving her as a single mom. But the worst part was he died with his young mistress in the crash causing a big scandal. When Bill went on location, the studio sent her an assistant to help her out with daily things. She turns out to be an out-of-work actor, and a man.
Their daughter, Morgan, was basically forgotten at just 7 years old while her mom worked away from home. She's now a successful plastic surgeon who has no time for a relationship with her regretful mom.
Josh, Ardith's new assistant takes over while she plans Bill's funeral. Meanwhile, Morgan starts to date a famous newscaster, 25 years older than her who's known to play around. His playing days catches up with him and she doesn't know what to trust.
Will she finally let go of her anger and confide in her mom?
Ardith Law an older well loved Hollywood star is the main character in this book. She was married to a big Hollywood movie producer and she had one child a daughter. The producer died in an accident with his girlfriend and Ardith chose not to remarry. Ardith had another significant other that she lived with but never married. He also died in his sleep while filming a film in England. His studio had given an assistant to help Ardith will he was gone. The two Morgan and Ardith fell in love with new men. Ardith fell in love with her assistant who was 21 years younger and Morgan fell in love with a news person over 20 years older. Interesting book.
At the crux of this story are two women, a mother and daughter who are fairly estranged. The mother was a high profile actress whose career was the number one part of her life. The daughter moves across the country to practice her medical career in plastic surgery. Both women have painful back stories and both women try out new relationships with men from a different age from the woman. Their story ebbs and flows and I felt the ending was a little rushed to complete the book. Sweet story. Thank you #NetGalley for the ARC.
Upside Down is Danielle Steel's newest novel. It is primarily the story of Ardith and Josh and their coming together. There's a secondary story of Ardith's daughter Morgan and her love interest Ben. The secondary story had part of my favorite part of this book in the movement of Morgan's character and the complexity of her situation. That storyline also is one of my larger criticisms of the storyline in that it felt like the author abruptly ended the story--almost as if there were a page limit.
I largely enjoyed this book and it was a good read when I just wanted an easy read over the holidays. Thanks to NetGalley for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Started off strong, but the storyline got bonkers and didn't have a consistent direction. You would get cancelled for wearing fur to the Golden Globes and the whole MeToo thing has been obsolete, I think the founders stole money.
Danielle Steel never disappoints. I loved this book. I loved the characters and the story of each one. Ardith was my favorite character and is such a glamorous movie star. I loved how she is such loving and caring person. Thanks #Netgalley for this amazing book.
I really loved this story about Ardith Law,one of the biggest stars for the past 40 years and had won 3 Golden Globes and 2 Oscars. . She has a daughter Morgan, who is a plastic surgeon., Ardith lived with an older actor William West and Morgan was into her career.. A very good story. Circumstances has Ardith falling for a younger man and Morgan for an older man. Check it out . This is a VERY GOOD READ..
Soulmates come in all shapes, sizes and ages. In LA Ardith did not know what she was getting into when rough looking Josh Gray showed up at her door claiming to be her new assistant. Working together everyday and them dealing with tragedy turned them into friends and then more.
In NY, Ardith’s daughter Morgan who is a plastic surgeon has a difficult relationship with her famous mother. Her unlikely relationship with a much older man made her see her mother in a different light. This is a delightful story about relationships and romance and it shows that you are never too old or too young to fall in love! Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Enjoyed this story.
The characters in this book were interesting and very believable. The story was good but it did repeat a lot. There would be a major point made and then it would be made again in the next paragraph. That is the only reason this is a 3 star review for me. The mother/daughter relationship was interesting and complicated just like they usually are. I loved the theme of forgiveness in this book. It takes a lot of energy to stay mad at someone for years.
Who makes the rules about life, love, and all that goes along with it? This book was all about unconventional love and second chances that come along in all aspects of ones life. Can you find love? Find love again? Make amends with someone who feels they were "wronged"? What does it take? This book takes you through the journey of a mother and daughter. I liked this one. It held my attention the whole way through and was complete. On occasion I have felt that her books lead up to the last 30-45 pages and then BOOM...the juice of the story is there. Not this one. I enjoyed it all the way through!
Another feel good story from Danielle, with all the Family, Mother, Daughter drama. Both Women are career driven and highly successful in their fields the drama between them was definitely upside down as the title implies. All in all a quick easy clean read. Bonus of this book was a character with the same name as my Grandfather- William (Bill) West.
Thank you to Netgalley, Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Delacorte Press and the Author Danielle Steel for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Queen of contemporary fiction has done it yet again!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know how she keeps putting out such beautiful, heartfelt stories but somehow she does and I hope she never stops.
I have not read many of Danielle's books, but wanted to give this one a try. I enjoyed the exploration of the mother-daughter relationship dynamic, and I found the struggles within that to be relatable. It also showed that reconciliation, while not always possible, can be a beacon of hope to those struggling with a relationship with a parent. I did find the plot lacking a bit of substance, but it was overall a pretty enjoyable read.
I enjoyed the story as a whole. Danielle Steele's books usually have me all in and captivated from beginning to end. This was rather bland in comparison. The messages are great. It just took a long time to get there with so much tedium in between.
Thank you to the publisher and net galley for this chance. I for one love Danielle Steel i read all her books no matter what its about. Her writing style is so point on and the stories always get me. I love her work i would love to keep reading more. I know its not recurring in books but i was sad to have this end. I wanted more more and more to read. I love the story and characters and i even cried of course it was so beautifully done. I recommend this book this author to anyone and everyone who asks. So exited to read more books from Danielle Steel my favorite author.
I could write practically the same review for all of Danielle Steel's novels. They are down-to-earth and matter-of-fact. I didn't feel like this one really had that much of a plot, but it was still entertaining reading, and I would never turn down the chance to read anything of hers.
This is a love story: a glamorous, world-famous movie star finds new love while attempting to get her own daughter to re-love her. Said daughter, also, well-known and successful also needs love in her life. Can they repair their troubled relationship while establishing their own love lives?
Grateful to NetGalley for the opportunities to read several of Ms Steel's books. Have posted a review on GoodReads and will do so on Amazon when book is published.
Ardith Law is the epitome of a Hollywood starlet. Think Marilyn, Elizabeth, Rita, or Judy! When tragedy strikes her long time partner, she has to reevaluate all areas of her life.
First, her home. Her temporary personal assistant, Josh Gray, is the perfect man to step in. Taking care of all the minute details, Josh is the godsend Ardith needs. Next is her strained relationship with her daughter. Ardith has to work hard to become the mother Morgan never had and to build a relationship across the country.
Both women use these circumstances to rebuild their lives. Morgan as she tries to cautiously tread into the waters of a new romance, and Ardith as she learns to live and love again.
