I adored this! In Her Princess at Midnight, Ridley takes the Cinderella story and puts a delightful sapphic spin on it – Cynthia doesn’t fall for the prince, but for his sister, whose beauty outshines the stepsisters’ ugliness. Cynthia is determined to attend the ball and see the princess again, though of course her stepmother and stepsisters stand in her way.

This is a novella, and the length suits the semi-fairy tale vibes in the book. It’s a nice blend of historical and fairy tale, but the ‘magic’ is left ambiguous, and the ‘fairy godmother’ role is less a separate character and taken over more by Cynthia and the princess fulfilling their dreams themselves. I loved the way Ridley blended in the iconic elements of the tale while still keeping it firmly in the regency setting.

It’s instalove, too, which again does feel like it fits the fairy tale element really well. The short length does mean some of it is a little rushed, and things are wrapped up fairly quickly, but overall I really enjoyed this regency fairy tale retelling.

This was absolutely amazing! I was totally enthralled with this story from beginning to end, I could barely put it down, and when I finally read the last page, the house was dark, I was hungry, thirsty, needed to pee and my neck was stiff. But damn, it was worth it!

I will read absolutely anything that Erica Ridley writes! I adore retellings. This is a twist on Cinderella. It was such a fun version. Instead of the prince, our Cinderella falls for the prince’s sister! Cynthia gets the short end of the stick when her father dies and she is left in the care of her evil stepmother and mean stepsisters. When she sees Princess Ammalia, it is love at first sight. What a beautiful love story. Thank you to NetGalley and WebMotion for the ebook arc in exchange for my honest review.

Happy to see more YA fiction for a lesbian audience. Overall, enjoyable and pleasant characterizations and situations. This story has a good build up but could benefit from a longer, more detailed finale. The wrap up felt a bit rushed to me. While the content seems apropo for a middle school or high school reader, the vocabulary and sentence structure is suited to a young audience, readers who struggle at their age level, or one with lower than average 7th grade reading skills.

This story was wonderful, and I enjoyed the many hilarious parts throughout the storyline.

It's not something I would have normally read, but I do enjoy Erica Ridley as an author.

I enjoyed how the arrogant Italian prince thought he was the center of the world, while his sister was considered to be absolutely worthless, by her brother and her father, the King. Her family knows she doesn't want to marry ANY man, but her father has warned her not cause any problems or scandals, at least until her brother has picked an English wife and cemented an alliance with England. But then, during the entrance parade to welcome the Prince, Cynthia and Princess Ammalia's gazes collide; and the story REALLY begins! And the ending is even more satisfying than just a regular old HEA! But I can't spoil the ending! read it and be amazed!

I usually like Erica Ridley's historical romances, but this novella was... not it.

Her Princess at Midnight is a sapphic retelling of Cinderella, which is SUCH a cute idea (and one I haven't personally read before), but it falls short in a few ways. I recognize that it's extremely difficult to make short stories and novella's feel impactful, but still.

There is SO much insta-love, and combine that with erratic characterizations of the size characters and main characters, and you don't get much emotional substance to the story. It was light and cute, sure, but it was also wholly unmemorable.

I know Erica Ridley can do better.

As much as I normally love this author, I couldn’t get into this book. I didn’t like the likeness to Cinderella or the changes to this story from the original. I couldn’t even get through the first chapter.

Title: Her Princess at Midnight
Author: Erica Ridley @ericaridley
Summary: What if Cinderella fell for the handsome prince’s… sister?
Cynthia lives a life of drudgery, toiling for her stepmother and stepsisters without receiving gratitude or pay. Every day is the same… until a royal retinue sweeps into town, inviting every unwed maiden to vie for the hand of the visiting prince.

The moment she lays eyes on the prince’s beautiful sister, Cynthia is smitten. She’s never been to a ball, and she’s determined not to miss this one. But when her family refuses to allow her to attend—not that Cynthia even has a gown to wear—it will take a miracle to escape the attic and catch the eye of the princess who holds the key to her heart!

Likes: I personally LOVE a queer retelling of a classic fairy tale! This is a novella and it reads very fast. It also works as a stand alone read even though it is part of a series.
Dislikes: My only complaint is that this is a novella and I would have loved to have read 250+ pages of this story.

This is a cute short story set vaguely within the Winchesters series. A different twist on the classic Cinderella tale.

I received an advanced reader's copy of Her Princess at Midnight by Erica Ridley via NetGalley from the author.

This novella length story is a Cinderella retelling centering around Cynthia Talbott who falls for the Princes's sister, Princess Ammalia. This is a short read and I enjoyed the story. I wish it had been a bit longer since the story felt a bit rushed.

I really liked the characters and the twist to the retelling in this story. I recommend this story to anyone looking for a short length, entertaining read.

I'm sorry, this was just bad. The Cinderella elements felt completely forced at times. The romance is extremely underdeveloped (even for a novella), and the characters are very one note. This just wasn't well written at all.

Sapphic retelling of Cinderella story. Although it was somewhat better than the original, and you can sense the attraction between the main characters, I lacked build-up for that chemistry and a bit of a story behind Cynthia and the prince's sister to make me believe that their romance has more ground than just a fling.

Thanks to Netgalley and WebMotion for the ARC of this!

I’m so into Erica Ridley’s romances, and this was no exception. I like a good retelling, especially a queer one, so I was very excited for this. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I wanted more, and I kind of wish it was longer and less love at first sight (which feels a tiny bit unfair to expect of a novella 😂)

#HerPrincessAtMidnight by #EricaRidley is a super cute, sapphic retelling of Cinderella. It won't win any awards but it was the brain break I needed after some big themes books this month. There were quite a few laugh out loud moments, as well as some great banter.
