Part two of the Daughters Boyfriend series. This instalment sees Ellie getting married to Kyle, for the fairytale life she deserves after her previous boyfriend tried to kill her. However, Kyle is not all that he seems and hiding a dark past. Dawn, Ellie’s mother, is determined to protect Ellie at all costs.
A more predictable tale, without the usual twists. Full of betrayal, murder and scams, this instalment won’t disappoint!
This is the first audiobook of Daniel Hurst's that I have experienced and I didn't realise until I was almost finished that this was a sequel. That said it did stand well on its own. There was enough of the back story to understand the plot. The plot slowly snowballed and there was a couple of unexpected twists thrown in there too.
The narrators were amazing and for me thats what makes or breaks an audiobook. There were three altogether which makes the book flow and easy to follow! A great psychological thriller!
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for a free audio in return for an honest review.
3⭐️ Thank you SO much to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC copy of this.
And my least fave so far from this author ✍️ 😔 Maybe it’s because I didn’t read the 1st one? 🧐 Still a quick read
The one important thing to know — this is the second book about Ellie and her mom Dawn. Stories are connected.
If you have no plans of reading the first one, it’s totally okay to read “My Daughter’s Husband” as a standalone. But if you want to read them both, don’t mix the order, or it can ruin the twist in the first book.
I personally think “My Daughter’s Husband” is much better! More dynamic and two big problems that Dawn and Ellie will deal with.
Kyle, Ellie’s new husband, acting weird right after marriage, but maybe he is just a workaholic. Then Dawn finds a suspicious letter that makes her feel curious if he is hiding something…
But it’s not all — Ellie has a dark story in her past and now it’s time to face the consequences.
It is a fast-paced thriller with short chapters so I finished it in a few days (usually an audiobook takes at least a week for me). The narrator is sooo good too!
I enjoyed the story and will definitely read more books by Daniel Hurst.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
In "My Daughter's Husband", what starts as a gorgeous destination wedding for Ellie turns into a nightmare. Ellie's mother, Dawn, is wary and paranoid of Ellie's new husband, Kyle. She has good reason to be worried, as Ellie's last boyfriend had tried to kill her, and Dawn had saved her. That happened in Book 1 of the series. I had not read the first one, but this book stands alone.
This thriller by Daniel Hurst is fast-paced and engaging and easy to binge-read or listen. Chapters alternate between Dawn, Ellie, and Harvey, who is the father of Ellie's dangerous past boyfriend. In the audiobook, each part has a different narrator - Harrie Dobby, Adam Sims, and Tamsin Kennard. The voices for each are well done, except when a woman does Kyle's dialogue.
I didn't like the characters of Dawn, nor Harvey, and Ellie is sweet but also very gullible. Dawn is paranoid, but she does find clues that there's something wrong. The last third of the book is exciting and goes very quickly.
Thank you to Bookouture Audio and Netgalley for providing me with an audio copy of this book to review in exchange for my honest opinion.
Gosh Daniel just does no wrong. As usual this book had me hooked and I couldn’t stop. Th multiple POV gave an amazing example of how people truly believe they are in the right and are acting earnestly. There was a growing pressure of doom
That didn’t disappoint, with a big old twist.
Ellie is unlucky in love and her mother rightly hates watching her go through pain with these “men”.
I guess a mothers love really does know no bounds
Thank you Bookoture and NetGalley for providing an ARC x
Gripping, fast paced thriller that will make you want to keep reading! I read this in one day. This book did a great job of summarizing the first in this series so it is easy to jump right in even if you spend time since you had the first book. I love the ending and didn’t see it coming. If you are looking for a quick, easy to get into, fast paced, read, I highly recommend!
Just what I needed - the second saga of Dawn and Ellie! Damien Hurst is a wonderful writer who has you absorbed from the first pages.
This is the followup to the book ‘My Daughter’s Boyfriend' and although I'm sure it can be enjoyed on its own as there is a lot of introduction, you be able to get more into the story if you read them in order and are aware of all the dumb decisions that were made 5 years prior.
As always the multiple points of view are amazing and still manage to keep enough in the dark to feel the tension even with the extra information. Here, we get 4 points of view; Ellie (daughter), Dawn (mother), Harvey (dead ex's dad) and Kyle (husband).
I read 5 of his other works and they never disappoint! This one looks like it is going to be a trilogy and I am seriously invested in the story at this point.
I am very happy that the narrators are being kept the same as I am already familiar with the voices of the characters.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture audio for ALC 🎧
WOW! This is a fast-paced, gripping and suspenseful thriller which will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. I started listening to the audio version and couldn't stop, spending hours promising myself 'just one more chapter', but one was never enough. I had to know what was going to happen.
The range of narrators telling this story adds depth, and kept me thoroughly engaged. They brought the story alive, sucking you straight into the drama. Just be warned if you're reading it on public transport, people will want to know what you're listening to!
My Daughter's Husband is the sequel to My Daughter's Boyfriend (also a great book) but could be read/listened to as a stand-alone because just the right level of background is included.
Enjoyable, pacey and thrilling.
Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Loved loved loved this book. Daniel Hurst is on fire. Definitely looking forward to the next instalment (fingers crossed there will be one)
Perfect page turner of a book. Hard to put down. Love the voices of the narrators as well. Adds to the suspense. Go get it!!!
Does she need saving again or is her mom creating a problem where there isn't one?
After escaping a dangerous relationship in her past, Ellie is now getting married to Kyle, the man of her dreams. Just days after their wedding, Dawn, finds a letter that makes her think Kyle is keeping secrets from her daughter. Convinced her daughter's life is in danger again, Dawn starts digging. How far will she go to protect her?
This was a great addition to the first book. I enjoyed joining Ellie and Dawn on another journey, getting closure from the first book, and seeing how the characters were effected by their troubled past. Audiobooks with a full cast of narrators are always exciting to me and these narrators did a great job. I enjoy Daniel Hurst's work but am starting to find it a little predictable. I'm still looking forward to reading more of his work.
My Daughter's Husband by Daniel Hurst
Narrated by Harrie Dobby, Adam Sims, Tamsin Kennard

Blurb
My daughter is getting married to the man of her dreams. But will she pay for it with her life?
My beautiful daughter Ellie walks down the aisle in her full-length lace dress, beaming with happiness. As she exchanges her vows with Kyle , who looks devastatingly handsome in his smart black suit, I hope this time will be different…
As confetti settles on the shoulders of the happy couple, I reassure myself that Kyle Beaumont is a charming, successful businessman. He’s so different to her ex-boyfriend – the man who tried to hurt my Ellie.
Except, only days after the ceremony, I discover a letter that makes my heart flip when I realise what my son-in-law is hiding. Ellie’s past is about to catch up with her, and I am certain my daughter is in danger.
But I’m her mother, and I’ll stop at nothing to protect her…
My Opinion
It has been a few years since the events of My Daughter's Boyfriend, and Dawn is once again on edge about the man in Ellie's life. If you have followed my reviews for a while then you will know that I have yet to find a Daniel Hurst book that I haven't enjoyed and this is another great psychological thriller.
I listened to this as an audiobook and each character having a different narrator makes it easy to follow when the perspective changes. A great, fast-paced novel.
Rating 4/5
Thank you to NetGalley and Daniel Hurst for this audio-ARC in exchange for my honest feedback and review.
Ellie and Dawn are back but this time Ellie is getting married! After all of the trouble with Harvey and Darryl they had it is time some love and happiness come back into their lives. Ellie is marrying Kyle, a self-employed business man who is very successful and loves Ellie more than anything. While it is hard for them to continue on and trust again trust Dawn and Ellie have to do. Until Harvey is released from jail and seen making his way to Europe. Then when Dawn starts to worry about Kyle's past mother and daughter start to think, not again!
I enjoyed this fast paced thriller. While there may not have been a blind twist in this novel it still kept me interested. I love the audio narrators in this series. Daniel Hurst is able to give us entertaining thrillers without all of the graphic stuff most thrillers have.
This is the second book I have read by Daniel Hurst, and I found both had the same good and bad qualities. For both books, the plot is interesting and the ending is satisfying. Unfortunately, both also seemed to drag until the last third or so of the book and the characters drove me absolutely crazy (in a bad way).
The plot of My Daughter’s Husband was interesting and I liked the way the two stories collided at the end, although it was expected. While there are some twists mingled throughout, this book seems less about the twists and more about seeing how the characters (mostly the mother) deal with the events that occur. I found the build up slow, but looking back, things were happening continuously, so perhaps there is just something about the writing style that doesn’t suit me. I found this book quite frustrating because the characters were making decisions that made me angry. Some of the choices seemed like ones no one would actually make (apart from doing so to move a plot point), though at least the author gave the characters reasons to make those decisions. For instance, at one point the mother doesn’t tell the daughter something. It was super frustrating but the mother’s friend gives her advice suggesting she not tell. While I didn’t agree, it did make sense why the mother made that decision. But those decisions made me frustrated with the book. But that may be a ‘me’ issue as I found the same thing happening in his other book but he is a popular author.
I listened to the audio version and I was happy with the narrator.
Having read two of the author’s books, I think his writing style just isn’t for me. Had I not received an advance copy, I likely wouldn’t have pushed past the first third. But the storyline concept was interesting and the ending satisfying. I give the book 3 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me an audiobook copy of My Daughter’s Husband which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
"My Daughter's Husband" is a captivating story covering the difficult balance between trust, secrets and the hidden dangers that can disrupt seemingly idyllic lives. The story centres around newlyweds, Ellie and Kyle, whose promising future becomes shrouded in uncertainty as a dark secret threatens to dismantle the happiness they've just begun to forge.
The story kicks off with the happy occasion of Ellie and Kyle's wedding, a day filled with hope and love. Dawn is the proud mother who is eager to see her daughter embark on this new chapter in her life, however, all is not what it seems and things quickly start to unravel after Dawn makes a discovery and as she unravels the truth, it becomes a race against time to save her daughter from a looming threat. However, unbeknownst to them, an even bigger threat from their past is just around the corner which will put both their lives in danger.
This book is full of suspense and tension with the narrators doing an excellent job of bringing the characters to life and is highly recommended to people who enjoy this genre.
Many thanks to the author, Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for enabling me to listen to and share my thoughts of My Daughter's Husband.
3.75ish stars
The characters in the book/series, and especially the daughter, have *the worst luck* ever. Plausible? Not even a little bit. Fun and past-paced? Generally, yes. I liked this book, as I did the first one, although a sequel really wasn’t necessary. Nevertheless, it was a quick and easy story to get through, and I mostly enjoyed the experience.
Thank you, Netgalley and publisher, for continuing to grant me access to advanced copies of Daniel Hurst's audiobooks. While I didn't necessarily see a sequel to My Daughter's Boyfriend coming, this made sense and brought forth some themes of deception and lies that I haven't read in other Hurst thrillers. No spoilers! I did enjoy this one, but it dragged a bit with repetitive inner monologues and sketchy characters going back and forth with predictable dialogues. Unfortunately, I also had the same problem with the inaccurate American phrasing as I did with the first book. Some examples that the American villain uttered: driving license, windscreen, back garden, and rucksack (multiple times!). This may be imperceptible to British readers, but not Americans. I feel like this will stay a duology, but who knows...maybe Daniel Hurst will cook something else up for Ellie and Dawn!
Another good one from Hurst.
This is the second in a series and is a great follow up.
Fast paced and full of tension.
I listened to the audio version and liked the narrators. I especially thought the male narrator presented just the right amount of foreboding with his character. The characters were all well represented and realistically portrayed.
You can't go wrong with a Hurst book.
Thanks to netgalley and Bookouture Audio for the arc.
A wonderfully crafted action-packed story with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat right to the last page. I found it well-paced, with well-developed characters and believable motivations, with an interesting plot and satisfying ending. The end had a satisfying, realistic conclusion; with enough justice for everyone.
