There has been an increase in books about math for kids in recent years, all attempting to make math fun and help kids engage with the topic. This book does a solid job of integrating simple division into a narrative as the reindeer attempt to divide their numbers into equal groups. It introduces the ideas of remainders in division and prime numbers while encouraging empathy and inclusivity. With charming illustrations and an easy to follow plot, this is a solid object lesson in division.

It wasn't quite as valuable as I thought it would be. I thought it would go a little bit more into the remainders. It seemed like it was a book for preschoolers, I was hoping it would be more of a grade 1 book. The illustrations are fun and the rhyming is great.

This class of 12 reindeer are getting read for a special presentation when a new student arrives. No problem. Until the reindeer try to divide into groups and no matter what they try, there's always a reindeer left out. Can they work together to make sure everyone is included?

This cute picture book is a great way to combine math, problem solving, teamwork, and more. A cute story about friendship, Reindeer Remainders presents multiplication and division in a living book manner. That's tricky to do. The author even dedicates a few pages to teaching the concepts of remainders and prime numbers, and including others in the group. This picture book is a fun way to introduce these math concepts in a unique way, and might even provide for some laughter in the classroom.

The Reindeer Remainders is a clever way of teaching maths concepts. Division, remainders and prime numbers are explained in an easily understandable and child friendly way as a group of reindeer try to make sure that none of them are left out.

Twelve excited reindeer race into class to prepare for Showcase Night. But a thirteenth reindeer has joined them! They need to get into pairs but it’s not possible. There’s more confusion when Mr Snow asks them to work in threes and Professor Fox wants them to work in groups of four. The reindeer, distraught at always leaving one out, ask Mrs Lynx what they should do and with her encouragement they work out a way to present their showcase without any remain-DEER.

The muted colours in the whimsical woodland illustrations perfectly complement the rhyming text, lessons take part in different areas of the woods with different teachers so there are new details to spot in each picture. We also love the outfits – the reindeer wear adorable neck scarves and Mr Snow’s stripy waistcoat is particularly snazzy!

At the end of the story there are explanations about reminders and prime numbers with illustrations to show mathematical processes. It’s a great story to introduce the concept of prime numbers. There’s also praise for the reindeer who have worked hard to make sure that no reindeer is left out. Children are encouraged to acknowledge the emotions they may experience when they feel left out as well as suggesting ways that they can include others in group situations.

This book is pure genius! The author conveys math concepts so clearly and in such a fun way. The reindeer are divided up in groups to work on a project with one reindeer always left out as the "remain-deer". And then the story wraps up with a positive message about friendship and inclusivity. There is plenty of useful back matter and so many classroom applications. This belongs in every class! And the emotional aspect makes it great for one-on-one sharing, too. I also love the illustrations.

What a wonderful little book. First, the illustrations are beautiful. This is not only a story about math concepts. It also is a great story for a social skills lesson on working together and resiliance. There are 13 raindeer in class. They split up into groups throughtout the day to work on various projects but 13 never divides evenly. Will they be able to figure out a way to include the 13th raindeer so he doesn't have to work alone?

Great addition to any classroom!

The reindeer are all excited about the upcoming Showcase Night at school, but whenever they try to divide into smaller groups to work on projects . . . there's always someone left out. A remaindeer, if you will.

This fun rhyming book not only tackles how it feels to be left out, but cleverly introduces the concept of prime numbers. A good story with wonderful illustrations by Marie Hermansson.

When a new student enters the reindeer class, it becomes challenging to group and regroup as the number of students is now 13! After a few attempts, the reindeer figure out how to make an inclusive group for ALL the reindeer, with no remainders.

I love books that rhyme and use wordplay, and this book does both! As 13 young reindeer prepare for a student showcase, they are asked by different teachers to divide into groups to work on different parts of the showcase. They consistently divide into equal groups with a "remain-DEER" of one, so one poor reindeer keeps getting left out! As the reindeer figure out how to solve this problem, readers learn about division and remainders. Back matter also does a great job of explaining both remainders and prime numbers, plus includes tools to help kids navigate the experience of being left out. One more thing I really like about this book is that it explains the math concepts in multiple ways -- through experience in the main text, through words in the back matter, and through actual math problems in the end pages -- so will reach many kinds of learners!

How can things be divided and what is a remainder? or is it Remain Deer? How can maths be fun?
There is a complete page about prime numbers and remainders, and another about feeling left out.
The illustrations by Marie Hermansson are fun, brilliantly colorful, and delightful.
Well suited for reading alone or WITH someone of any age including ESL, and great for gifting to everyone, but especially to a school/classroom or your local public library!

This book shows it's possible to include math in a story and have it be fun. What a fun way to learn about math. This story was absolutely delightful and the illustrations charming. The ending of the book is great because it tells what remainders and prime numbers are as well as what to do when someone is left out. Great Book.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc.

This is a fun math concept book. A new reindeer joins the school and it’s put their number at 13 so when the groups are told to pair there is always a remain-deer. The book rhymes well and gets it’s lesson across. Kids will understand it and the play on words of remainder and remain – DEER. All in all, this was a fabulous math book that got the concept of prime numbers across in an excellent understandable way.

I received an electronic ARC from SOURCEBOOKS Kids through NetGalley.
The dozen reindeer have been together in school for a long time. Then, on the day of the big Showcase, a new student arrives. They spend the time in different classes trying to figure out why their groups always have a remaindeer now. When they finally get to math class, their teacher introduces them to prime numbers and how they work. The group figures out how to revamp their projects and include everyone in one large 13-member group. I appreciate how Howes incorporates math information in the story. Readers will enjoy the fun and learn more about math. I also like the way these students work to include everyone after leaving the new student out for much of the day. The author includes informative text on math and on how we can avoid leaving others out at the end of the book.

I can’t wait to tell our math interventionist about this book. It’ll be a perfect book for her to use to introduce the concept of prime numbers. The story is cute and is great for SEL and not just math. It has a lesson about not leaving people out and what being alone feels like as well.

The Reindeer Remainders by: Katey Howes

Math in literacy is a very effective way to engage kids in math without the anxiety some students feel in math class or with math homework. This picture book is a perfect example of this as because it is full of beautiful illustrations and authentic reasons that require division. Prime numbers are also addressed in the context of the reindeer problems. I think it is a perfect way to introduce and practice the concept of division in a classroom or at home as it can be a difficult concept for students to understand and conceptualize.

I would definitely use this picture book in my math classroom to investigate division and prime numbers in an authentic context. The illustrations will help children to visualize the problems and allow them to 1:1 match and see different ways to represent their thinking when trying it on their own. I would recommend this book for kids in grade 3-5 who are investigating division, fair shares, remainders and prime numbers. It would be the perfect addition to classroom libraries, school/public libraries, and a student's personal library.

Such a fun story to teach kids about prime numbers and remainders! The concept of remainders in math also applies to a new reindeer student who is left out of the groups until the reindeer can solve the problem. I loved the charming woodland illustrations. I appreciate the guide on how to address students feeling left out as well as a summary of prime numbers and remainders at the end of the book.

Thank you NetGalley and Sourcebook Kids for this advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
