There is something very visceral in the way McGowan presents the subject matter of this story.
It felt like a song that had been sung before, but the descriptive language was done well enough to pull a reader in.
God is a Woman is a powerful anthology of poems that celebrate the body. If there was ever a work to celebrate the Woman and her body, this is the one. TJ McGowan writes in a quiet reverence for the Woman. An added bonus is the book’s revenue goes to an Abortion rights fund, tying in with the worship of the body. This collection of poems is very sexual without being graphic. For example, my favorite poem of the book is “Pussy”. If you were ever looking for a poetry book similar to Hozier’s work, or a refreshingly reverent scripture for the Woman, this is the place.
I personally think the form could have been played with a bit more. However, because the book is short, it's a bit easier to read several poems of the same form– all single uninterrupted stanzas (save for a few, great prose pieces I really recommend). I think the artwork helps break up the monotony.
I also think it's very hard to write what are essentially love poems that have not been done before. I think at some points, much like all other poetry, there are a few overused idioms. I want to be clear, I don’t think this is a bad thing, because McGowan frames them in a completely unique way.
I especially enjoy the review in the voice of Lilith. I think that is very funny, but also indicative of worship and an almost biblical tie into the book.
