This was a cute little magical graphic novel about all the feelings. It made me feel all warm and fuzzy.
This is a book about fitting in and learning to see the good in the bad and vice versa. The beginning reminds me of how I felt when I first went to study in Scotland. I think that is what got me hooked right from the start.
This was such a cute little graphic novel that I read so quickly (about half an hour!)
This felt exactly like the happy jars must - it was just a little pocket of happiness. I really enjoyed this and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick pick-me-up read or pallet cleanser!
The happy shop is a story of a job that sells, not so much happiness, but memories of happiness. Things like getting a puppy as a present, or finding a five dollar bill in an old coat, or the first taste of ice cream. When Darcy finds the shop for the first time, she accidentally breaks some of the jars, and has to make up for the lost jars, by helping around the shop.
This is a cute story about the things that make us both happy and sad. Do we always want only happy thoughts, or some of the sad thoughts worth having as well?
I like some of the examples given in the shop, and how the two sisters that run it realize that perhaps only happy times are not the only thing people need. Nice illustrations, and interesting take on memories and thoughts.
A quick read, this is going to be published the 13th of February 2024. Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read in exchange for an honest review.
What a powerful graphic novel. The illustrations are clear and enhance the story. The book is sure to lead to some great conversations about the importance of feelings and how all emotions can be useful.
Thank you, Oni Press, for the advance reading copy.
I like this graphic novel. It has got all the emotions and coziness of a close friend/family.
I do like the concept of buying/selling happy or feelings that different people need. I love the illustrations and the art style. It’s so cozy and melancholic at times adding to the mood of the characters.
An easy to read middle grade graphic novel which the young readers would love and enjoy.
Just go for it.
This graphic novel follows 11 year old Darcy, who is having trouble adjusting to her new home in a different country. By chance, she stumbles across ‘The Happy Shop’, a shop which sells bottled happy feelings. Could this be the answer to her problems?
This was a beautiful story, very short and sweet! I adored the whimsical feel that the magic shop provided. Reading this felt very much like being a customer in the happy shop- I came into this read feeling sad, but left feeling much happier :)
This graphic novel provided a reminder of something seemingly obvious but often forgotten- that we should appreciate what we have and try to find a silver lining in the situations we experience.
I can’t stress enough how much I enjoyed this graphic novel- I will definitely be purchasing a physical copy when it’s released (13th Feb 2024) as I can see myself rereading this often. I will definitely be checking out the authors other works!
I think this would be the perfect read for anyone looking for a pick me up and is suitable for children and adults alike. The comparison to Inside Out is definitely warranted in my opinion.
A big thank you to NetGalley and Oni Press for giving me the opportunity to read a digital arc of this.
What a beautiful book! We all need a happy shop! Collecting happy moments to share with others. I loved this story, so meaningful and lovely! Sometimes you need cheering up, other times you need to see or feel something to appreciate what you already have. This book has got me thinking and I love the cartoons in this book! Flora and Frida are lovely! Frida takes time to get used to but she has her reasons, such a thought provoking story and shows you to appreciate the good and bad times as and when they happen!
Would recommend this book and hope to find more from the author in the future as they are new to me.
This a quaint story, a comic worth spending time with. A way to find a happy feeling. The story told: Who wouldn’t want to go into a shop and be able to buy a happy feeling moment? But emotions are really much more complex, what’s seems happy for one person brings other feelings to someone else. Thank you to Oni Press and NetGalley for the comic ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
Thank you NetGalley for gifting me a copy of this book.
This was a nice, unique and easy to read graphic novel.
I would LOVE to have a place like this where you can get happy feelings when you feel down. It would really be helpful. The main character was lovely and the two sisters too at the end.
I would 100% recommend.
This short graphic novel is a true delight. The illustrations are simple but nicely colored. I love the central idea of the story that there’s a shop selling bottled up feelings of happiness for buyers to enjoy. Darcy is a young girl who is adjusting to life in a new home with her hardworking single mother. When she happens upon the Happy Shop, she is intrigued and ultimately finds employment with the sister owners. Overall, this book was unique, enjoyable, and thought-provoking. I would have loved more depth and development of the side characters and their back stories. I’m very grateful to NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advance digital copy of this book.
The Happy Shop is a middle grade graphic novel that centers around a young girl who has just moved to a new country with her mother, and is having a hard time adjusting. When she gets drawn to a happy thoughts shop and accidentally breaks a few jars of happy thoughts, she takes up a part time job at the shop to help pay back the damage she caused. Through her work in the shop, she starts to find what she needs to adjust to this new life.
This story was super cute and sweet. I liked the artwork, but found it a bit simplistic (mostly solid colors, not much shading), which I think a younger audience may be drawn to. The things I liked about this graphic novel were the pacing and the well thought out story. Everything made sense and there was a solid conclusion. I also thought the idea of a happy thoughts shop was unique and creative, and I enjoyed learning about how that magic worked.
Something I didn't love was that the character Frida was SO MEAN! How do you get so mean working in a happiness shop, and also, why is she so mad at the girl for breaking her jars when they only broke because she startled the girl! I also wish the girl had had a chance to make some friends her own age in the story.
I think this story would be enjoyed by middle grade readers. It is a great story for someone who is having a hard time to adjust to something new in their life. I personally give this a 4.5/5 but will round up to 5!
