Publisher: Montlake
General Fiction (Adult), Romance, Mystery
Expected Publication Date: May 14, 2024
On Her Watch is the eight book in the Bree Taggert series by Melinda Leigh. This book is easy to read as a standalone book, but the series is so good, that it's worth reading them all!!!
I could not put this book down! I actually read it in a day because I could not get enough of it! I found this to be captivating and I was on the edge of my seat!
I absolutely love the characters in this series and I have grown so attached to them. Sheriff Bree Taggert is fierce and amazing. I love her family and friends. The storyline was incredible! This is fast paced, filled with action, and so many twists and turns as Bree tries to figure out who the murderer is! I could not put this one down! I was on the edge of my seat and stayed up late so I could see how is ended! Incredible!!!!
I highly recommend reading this if you enjoy crime dramas! 5 Stars!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I am liking this series and this was an one session read as I just wanted to see how Bree and her colleagues resolved this. I like the way as the series progresses I get to know more and more about the characters and their relationships.
The climate came into its own within this book and the level of mud described was incredible.
Whilst reading this as it was set in the middle of a flu epidemic I just get saying thank you to having a flu vaccine programme.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
This series just continues to get better and better. Great character development along with fast paced crime thriller story line.
I could not put this down. I devoured on a plane ride. I hope we continue to see Bree Taggert for a long time. If you love mystery, suspense with some romance and crime this is a must read.
The eight installment on Melinda Leigh’s Bree Taggert series, “On Her Watch” shows the heroine and her committed team deciphering a serial crime in their small community while juggling family and romantic and social life.
The horrific realities of the crimes are somehow balanced by the domestic scenes of sheriff Taggert’s life with her small family and also the other team members’ lives.
The sheer cruelty and inutility of the victims’ murders is shocking, but it’s rewarding that some victims are rescued due to the police investigation.
The normalcy of the villains, regular people with admirable principles and projects, make the murders and the deaths of innocent people even more gruesome.
The weather conditions matched the desolation of the serial crime.
Bree and Matt’s love seems more and more consolidated and both their families more deeply interconnected.
I liked watching them admitting their feelings without fears and even thinking of marriage and children. It has been a slow and steady journey.
I also enjoyed seeing the other great supporting characters and how team work, friendship, affection, empathy and compassion play a role within work and family relations.
I absolutely love the Sheriff Bree Taggert books and the whole series. There is a serial killer loose in her town and with the help of Investigator Matt Flynn they are on his track. The mystery was great but I especially love the interaction with her family. I love the kids and how Bree and Matt interact with them. I highly recommend this book and this series.
On Her Watch by M. Leigh, published by Montlake, is book eight in the Bree Taggert Series.
The books are best read in order, there are cross-overs to previous books.
Sheriff Bree Taggert's latesst case brings a serial killer to her doorstep. Together with her partner Matt Flynn they work to catch the person who abducts young women.
Another outstanding read, literally unputdownable, suspenseful, a tthiller of its finest with twists and turns I never had dreamed of. Every step Bree and Matt take, thgey seem always running behind. How can that be? My guess was as good as yours till the very unexpected finale. That I never saw coming.
I recommend the book and the series, 5 stars.
This just might be my favorite of the Bree Taggert books so far! The plot was AMAZING and I legit never saw the chilling twist coming. the plot twists will keep your mind spinning till the very end. don't miss this!!
A big thank you goes out to NetGalley, Montlake Publishing and, of course, Melinda Leigh for the arc I recently read. I noticed it was available to download instantly on NetGalley (no approval necessary!) and I immediately sent it to my Kindle.
To say I love Bree, Matt, Luke, Kayla and many of the other secondary characters in this series is a no-brainer. The suspense was one of the more gruesome in Ms. Leigh's books, but Randolph County always seems to have some nasty thing occurring. This is where I had to suspend my disbelief regarding this rural area and just believe they have a higher crime rate than norm.
Influenza is making the rounds and has affected most families. There has also been no break in the rain over the past few weeks. These factors set the tone for the suspense, and it is easy to see why I empathize with Sheriff Taggert. In addition to maneuvering within the town's politics, she has a very tough job, but she still manages to care about people.
The camaraderie within Bree's household and the respect of her deputies' factors is another reason why I enjoy each story. If you are a new reader start with Cross Her Heart. Welcome to Bree's world!
I'm so thankful I was able to read this via NetGalley, I was not disappointed! There was just the right amount of suspense to keep me reading, and just when I thought I had an idea which direction it was going, I would find I was incorrect. This book had a good mix of describing the search for a serial killer, and the emotional side Bree is feeling in her role and with her family. I really appreciated Bree's role and how she was portrayed in relation to her fellow employees and the families she was attempting the help. I had not read the previous books but intend to go back and read them as I am now invested in the characters. With that being said, this novel does stand on it's own so if you haven't read the others you will be able to understand what is going on without reading the others. I love a good mystery, and Melinda did not disappoint!
I have read all of melinda Leighs previous novels and love them all, I love the relationship between bree and matt and how their relationship has grown, I dont think that this is the best of the series but still a very good read, I could not guess who they were hunting for and it kept me interested all the way through. Thank you
This series keeps getting better and somehow each story is fresh and exciting. The mystery is full of twists and action. I love Bree and Matt. While we follow their progress in the case we also see their personal life and all the characters we have come to care for. I already want the next one.
Thank you to the author and publisher for the ARC. This has not influenced by review.
The Bree Taggert series has quickly become one of my favorite series. In fact, I've now read 7 of the 8 books in the series, and the novella, in the last month. This book gave me everything I look forward to in a Bree Taggert book. The mystery was well-written and it kept me guessing until the reveal. The relationship between Bree and Matt, as always, was exactly what I wanted and was expecting. I will always recommend this series to people who want a good procedural mystery.
I have read this entire series and totally recommend it. This is a great series with great characters you come to love and great storylines. This is a series not to be missed
Sheriff Bree Taggert and her investigator boyfriend, Matt Flynn are back solving yet another murder. This time a serial killer is striking fear after the bodies of three young women are found in a dumping ground and a friend of one of the victims is missing. Will they, along with others in the sheriff department, be able to catch the killer before another woman is murdered?
I love Melinda Leigh’s books. If you haven’t read any, don’t start with this one. Start with book one of the Bree Taggert series or book one of another series. On Her Watch is a fast paced thriller with many of the likable characters from the previous books in the series. You won’t want to put it down until you reach the exciting conclusion.
On another note, would I want to live in the New York county where Bree is sheriff? Heck no! The murder rate is really high, kind of like a quaint English village in many British television shows. 🙂
Thanks to NetGalley, Melinda Leigh, and Montlake for the ARC of the ebook. Publication date is May 14, 2024.
This book was a page turner from beginning to end. A huge fan of sheriff Bree taggart and this series. It is a good mix of love, suspense and mystery. Bree is an independent strong woman which makes this not difficult to read like so many helpless romantic love interest stories. Would highly recommend. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
On Her Watch by Melinda Leigh is book 8 in the Bree Taggert series, and it's so good! I don't even need to read the synopsis to want to read this book and anything in this series. I am a fan of Melinda Leigh and grab her books when they are released.
Melinda Leigh has an engaging writing style that immerses me in the plot, and she has created well-developed characters that a reader can identify with.
On Her Watch touches on poverty, how relentless it can be, and how it can make a person do things they may not normally do. I LOVE the dogs in this series. They are like individual characters themselves. I totally agree that dogs have emotions and souls and that they are more honest, loyal, and sometimes better than some humans.
Luke and Kayla are back as well, and it's really fun to read about them and their journey.
There is one scene that brought tears to my eyes (I don't want to say what it is as it will give away the plot), but one character stated that we all make mistakes and the best we can do is try to do and be better going forward as we can't go back and change the past. This is so true.
I would not hesitate to recommend a Melinda Leigh book, and I would highly recommend starting from book 1 in this series. A great addition to the Bree Taggert collection. The writing is solid, the pacing holds your interest throughout, and the plot is exciting.

I very rarely get the connections, but I did figure out what linked our victims and I'm proud of that! Although it was horrible and sad what happened to the dead women in this book.
Its a decent murder mystery and police procedural; not anything ground breaking in terms of story and characters but it's relatively fast paced. Good plane or vacation read.
A huge thank you to NetGalley and Montlake Publishing for the ARC of On Her Watch. It is my pleasure to offer this review of Melinda Leigh’s new Bree Taggert book.
I can’t imagine having the talent and skill to write a single book, let alone a series or multiple series of books. That’s what Melinda Leigh has in abundance. Her talent and ability continue to show themselves even as she writes the eighth in this series. She simply gets better!
I have come to love and respect Bree as she is written. She’s tough on the outside and soft on the inside. Her staff like and respect her. In addition, Matt loves and respects her as the boss. She doesn’t knuckle under or sublimate herself to her male colleagues or county officials. She’s a tough nut.
Keep writing Melinda. I’m looking forward to the next book already.
Another fantastic addition to the Bree Taggert series. Loved everything about it and anxiously awaiting the next one.
Thank you #netgalley and #montlake for the eARC.
Addictive mystery with a strong cast of characters, including a few dogs and one cat with a huge case of cattitude! Great procedural with strong female lead and a good mix of the interpersonal with the investigation. Can't wait for the next one. Love the focus on working dogs, and dogs as part of the family, really makes it.
