Building a Team is a middlegrades story about a baseball team that has to work to build friendships and teamwork. Luis is the new kid on the Manatees having moved to town recently. Coach Joe thinks that because they are getting older, they should have a team captain. He asks them all the same question and based on their answers he picks Luis to be the captain. Neither Luis, nor most of the team are happy that the new kid is their captain, but the coach has made up his mind. As the story progresses, they practise, learn what positions they are going to play and get bored. Coach Joe wants Luis to try and motivate the team. The first step is to start liking one another and get rid of grudges. As the story unfolds, the reader sees them become a cohesive team and friends.
I enjoyed this story. I like the way Aaron Derr sends an important message about teamwork, without it sounding like preaching. These are normal children, with relatable feelings. I liked how they worked through things together and ended up helping one another. Do they win the season? You'll have to read this one to find out. I thought the illustrations were wonderful. There were just enough to break up the text and add to the story. They are in black and white which is perfect of this middlegrades story. Messages of teamwork, cooperation, forgiveness, compromise, being a leader and having fun while trying your best are all evident in the story. The book won the BREW Children's Book Excellence Award 2024 for Teamwork Book of the Year.
This is a great book about working together. A great classroom or family read. Perfect for children, classrooms, counseling offices, families and so much more!
This is so well written for its age group! My son will love it! Baseball kids will love it! Five Stars!
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for the eARC!
This is a beginning chapter book- there are pictures throughout the chapters but not as many as a picture book. A great way to get older kiddos used to chapter books who love sports! This shows the importance of a team and working together- there is no I in team! It looks like this is going to be a mini series which will be great for young sport lovers- it would be interesting to see different sports show throughout these series!

Building a Team is a new middle grade story about a baseball team. Luis is the new kid on the team and there are some problems. The team has to learn how to work together in order to win and be a good team.
I thought this was a good book! There are a lot of good lessons throughout for the kids. I also liked the baseball aspect of this book. Who doesn’t love baseball? It is also about to be spring so it is the perfect time for this book! I think kids who are interested in baseball are really going to like this one. I also enjoyed the illustrations throughout.
Thanks so much to netgalley and Red Chair Press for the arc of this book in exchange for an honest review!
This book would be great for children playing sports. Encourages and challenges them to work together to do their best both as a team and individually. The artwork goes with the theme of each chapter like a child’s drawings.
A story strong on building a team, being a good teammate, and building leadership in young people, this children’s fiction book is a solid read. The sweet spot for readers is ages 8-13. The illustrations break up the text nicely.
In this book, Coach Joe turns over the leadership elements to the players and Luis, who is new to the team, must find a way to bring his teammates together. While competition and winning is important, it’s more about working together and learning from others' strengths.
Thank you #NetGalley for the ARC!
While this is such a fun book for baseball-loving readers, the delightful story of team dynamics will appeal to anyone who's ever been the new kid learning to navigate friendships on and off the field.
had so much fun reading this book, the story is so adorable and the illustrations were so well done and charming, there’s so many little details in every page that I couldn’t stop but be mesmerized by it all. I will definitely be recommending it! Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this early copy
