I’m going to be honest, I don’t think this was the book for me. It took some time to get into and I guessed the twist pretty early into the book. I rated it three stars because it had potential and I believe that some readers will love this book.
The main character bothered me quite a bit with her obsession with everything about him and how much she reminded me of the girls in love with Ted Bundy. It was a unique story line and the way the author wrote it was good but again not for me.
I would consider reading more by this author in the future.
Hannah is adrift. Her job at a non-profit is going nowhere and she spends most of her time pining for men who never reciprocate. Hannah desperately wants to in love and escape her mediocre family, her dead end job and the painful solitude of the studio apartment she can barely afford. On the wrong side of thirty, she is starting to think her window of opportunity has closed. Everything changes when she becomes obsessed with an online forum that is following the case of a serial killer accused of brutally murdering multiple women in Georgia. His name is William. He is a lawyer from a wealthy family and decidedly handsome. While William is in jail awaiting trial Hannah cannot stop thinking about the case, about William, and she writes him a letter. Not expecting a response, Hannah is shocked when William sends a friendly and rather flirty reply. They become penpals. Although Hannah believes he is guilty she learns all about his life and her feelings become magnified when William wants to know about hers. No-one has ever given Hannah this kind of attention and she is quickly drawn into his world. The trial is approaching and Hannah drives across the country to attend. She meets his family, she meets other women obsessed with the case and together they await the verdict. Hannah must be crazy, right? What kind of person would fall in love a serial killer? Filled with completely unexpected twists and turns, this fast paced insanity was absolutely unputdownable.
I REALLY enjoyed this one.
I didn't like the main character Hannah but, I think that was the point? 😂 kept me invested in a "lord 🤦♀️ what is she going to do now" kind of way lol.. not really any shocking / unforseeable moments for me, but this story still held my attention throughout.
Thank you to Netgalley and Berkley Publishing Group for this Advanced Copy Read. This novel is set to release June 25, 2024.
The main character was insufferable and I figured out the plot twist less than halfway through the book.
This book was wild.
I don’t know what exactly I was expecting, but this wasn’t it.
People have a fascination with serial killers. This is a fact. And when the killer is conventionally attractive? Well, he’ll collect admirers almost as quickly as he collects haters. William, our MMC, is no exception. After all, Hannah likes him for the moment he’s taken away in handcuffs.
Now about Hannah, she is unhinged, delulu, a wackadoodle, if you will, she’s a woman with low self-esteem who preens at any semblance of a compliment. More than a little self-obsessed she makes the victim's deaths in the book about her. It’s her purpose to find the killer, to get justice for these women. Except it isn’t. It’s neither her place nor her true intent. In the end, she’s just a woman obsessed with the idea of being murdered.
The book is fascinating in its ability to keep us engaged. Hannah is an interesting narrator because she is both unreliable and often unrelatable. I'd equate the experience to driving past a massive car crash. You can't look away. You can't help but wonder about the fake of everyone involved. And you can't help but come up with little theories about things.
The final reveal/confrontation? I guessed it. I was thrilled about being correct. Also, perhaps, I’m a little crazy here but I think they could have made it work?
Anyway, I started this book last night before bed. I got through sixty percent and finished the rest today after returning home from the gym. It was so unlike the books I usually read, but I was entertained the entire time and that’s what matters.
I’ll be on the lookout for more books by this author.
In Love letters to a serial killer Hannah begins writing alleged serial killer William and then falls for him. Writing back and forth getting to know eachother and supporting him through his trial.
As the main character she was absolutely all over the place and unhinged which kept the story going in different directions. It definitely had me contemplating the different mental health issues she would have been dealing with. I also felt like her character development was a distraction from the exciting part(s) of the book: the letters back & forth, the murders William is accused of and the truth- did he do it or not?!
I did feel like the book was pretty predictable but a good read nonetheless. As a thriller/suspense lover- this book was a highly anticipated release for me. It didn’t disappoint in my opinion and is worth the read for sure.
Oh wow!! I really enjoyed this one! The ending was not at all what i was expecting! This was such an interesting idea for a novel. I recommend this read!
3.5 stars!!
Who are you willing to date to feel beautiful? Worthy? Appreciated? Like you’re one in a million? How far are you willing to go to feel like your life has purpose?
Well, Hannah DEFINITELY has some answers buuuuuut I’m not sure you want to follow in her footsteps. Hannah dates unsatisfying men, has a deadened job, and created a document for her upcoming novel that has no words. Hannah wants to feel like her life has purpose and the perfect opportunity comes when a Georgia woman is found dead…..then another…..then another….then another.
My faves:
● I really did appreciate the examination of why some women (and men) seek out deplorable people as love interests. Charles Manson got
married, Ted Bundy got married and had a baby, Jeffrey Dahmer received love letters, and the list goes on.
● Hannah can easily be hated BUT just as easily understood and, in some ways, relatable.
● This story kept me turning pages, not necessarily for a mystery but to try to understand the thought process in the decisions that this girl
was making! LOL
● The sad truth is how when someone’s standards are so low, they are willing to accept anything and everything that offers a sliver of
validation even to their own detriment.
If you like shows like Love After Lockup and 90 Day Fiancé or have ever wondered why people throw their undergarments at serial killers and other predators, then I think you would enjoy this book. It was a good examination into the lengths we go to for connection and purpose.
I really enjoyed how effed up this book was and how real this story is for a lot of people. Tasha Coryell is for sure an author I’m going to be eyeing henceforth!
Thank you to Berkley Publishing and NetGalley for the ARC!!
For the most part I liked this book. The premise really drew me in. It’s unique and creative and I just had to know what was going to happen (also the cover is fantastic 🤩). But unfortunately the last third of the book ended up kind of fizzling out. The plot got to be a little too predictable and my interest waned a bit. The last third also had more spice than at first, and it felt kind of jarring and awkward.
The main character was… something 😂 It was interesting (and off-putting 🤪) being in her head, as she is clearly mentally unstable, without seeming to realize she’s mentally unstable, which was entertaining and annoying all at the same time.
Overall it was still a good read. Fast paced and easy to binge read. If the premise sounds intriguing to you I definitely recommend giving it a shot 😊
Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for the eARC of this book.
I really, really wanted to love this book but it fell flat for me. The beginning dragged for me with the main character just obsessed with the case and not really doing a whole lot. Even once we got into the thick of the plot it all felt very dragged out and not very exciting. I finished it to see who it was, and I had guessed it earlier on, but overall this was just a meh book for me.
Wow. Love Letters to a Serial Killer reads almost like a case study. I know every single one of us has wondered about Those Women. You know. The ones who fall in love with convicted killers. You know, Ted Bundy, Tex Watson, Richard Ramirez, both Menendez brothers, both Hillside Stranglers, Bolin the Butcher, etc. I wish I could say this is an uncommon phenomenon, but it’s really, really not.
Love Letters puts us right inside the head of one of Those Women. Hannah, I have to imagine, would be a psychiatrist’s dream. And not just because of the serial killer thing – although that certainly factors in. It is pretty clear from the get-go that Hannah has some…issues. She’s a little neurotic, and she’s got a truly fascinating relationship with reality and the world around her. Is she completely batshit? No, absolutely not. But there are some signs that she maybe has some undiagnosed psychological stuff going on. I’d wager some sort of personality disorder at the absolute least (but I’m no doctor, in case you were wondering).
She has some intensely questionable decision-making skills, which I’m sure on some level we can all relate to (right? please say yes). But she just keeps compounding bad decisions with other bad decisions until she’s in so deep she can’t do anything but try to dig her way back out – which she is admittedly not great at.
Love Letters is at its core about a group of extremely dysfunctional people, and a serial killer (who is surprisingly functional, all things considered). It is not the most surprising story I’ve ever read, but it does definitely draw you in, even if you do already have a handle on what’s going on way earlier than you’d maybe like to. So points for that.
Rating:
⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4 out of 5.
Overall, this was a thoroughly entertaining read. Hannah is a bit of a trainwreck, and you really don’t want to look away, even if you already know how this is all gonna end. I vote: check it out.

Thank you Berkley Publishing Group and Netgalley for a copy of this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars rounded down
What in the heck did I just read? Whatever it was, captured my attention completely. Hannah is the epitome of a true-crime-obsessed girl. Do I question all of her choices? Yes. Was the book entertaining? Also, yes. Did the book make me frustrated? Yes, but I think that was the point. I mean who falls in love with a possible serial killer on trial? Based on cases like Ted Bundy, women do all the time. I do think the point of view and the sequence of events, keeps readers entertained.
While it wasn't my favorite book, it certainly piqued my interest and is unlike anything I've read before.
This was a very fun, kind of unhinged, and enjoyable read for me! I definitely was able to predict the twist, but that didn’t make me enjoy it any less.
This is an example of a book where I really do like the characters but I think they could all benefit from a good strong therapy session. But I also think that that was one of the reasons this was such a fun read for me!
Some unhinged fun! I was honestly delighted - this is exactly my kind of book. It was fun, quick and completely insane the whole way through. Hannah is such an insane character, I really had no idea what she would do next and I often went back and forth on who I thought really killed the four victims. This is a read in a day because you can't put it down kind of book that will make you laugh and scream at the utter absurdities happening on the page.
5 Stars!
"There is little difference between kissing a man who you think might be a murderer and a man who you know is one."
An unhinged freaking train wreck in a book that I could not put down! Excellent! Could not stop listening.
Hannah hears about William Thompson's alleged first murder and becomes drawn to his case. But as the bodies start to pile up, Hannah's interest begins to grow into an obsession. When William is arrested and awaiting trial, she begins to write him letters. Soon she is let go from her job and travelling across the country to see his trial in person.
Full disclosure, this could have been me during the Scott Peterson trials. I would go straight home from work every day to watch his trial. And we've heard of these cases right? Even Ted Bundy had a baby with a woman who he didn't begin a relationship with until after he was in prison.
This book was insane, crazy, and even maybe a little over the top sometimes but I loved the heck out of it. It's like a reverse You...reverse in the sense that the victim (was she a victim...??) is obsessed with the serial killer instead of the other way around.
And then once the story started to unfold and we get to know the Thompson family, I too was obsessed and could not stop listening. William was a successful lawyer from a predominant Georgia family before the murders began.
I don't know what to say about Hannah's character. At times, I could totally relate to her, like her insecurities... but then at other times, I wanted to reach into the book and shake her and be like, chick, are you f-ing crazy?!??!
And how can I review this book without commending the queen of female narrators, Andi Ardnt who did such a phenomenal job bringing Hannah and this whole cast to life. I can't imagine anyone else having narrated this book.
I gave this book a full five stars because it was so out of the box and unlike anything I've ever read!
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin RandomHouse Audio for me ARC and ALC's of this book which I received in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars. Why do women write to serial killers? Unhappy in her life Hannah, sets out to admonish an accused serial killer and ends up his trial groupie and eventual fiancee. Darkly funny and obsessive read. Thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Books for this advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.
Couldn't pass up reading this book after seeing the title.
30-something Hannah becomes obsessed with the case of 4 murdered girls. After joining a forum and trying to solve them, she becomes engrossed to point of getting fired. Hannah starts corresponding with the accused murderer and becomes his girlfriend. With no job or friends she decides to travel to Georgia and watch the trial. Things get messy from there.
The plot of the book was good but the book was slow at times. The last few chapters were definitely binge worthy!
I would love the answer to the obvious question at the end of the book!
I unfortunately had to DNF at 43%.
I started reading this over a month ago and have had no desire to pick it back up again. It completely lost me and I have no interest in trying to force myself to like these characters who are very immature.
Thank you so much to Berkley for the chance to read this ARC, it’s unfortunate that it wasn’t for me!
This one surprised me. Hannah finds herself “stuck” and until the murders start happening she has no purpose. Now she makes it her mission to find the killer….and maybe fall in love with him?! A unique twist on the normal true crime style thrillers I read which was really refreshing. Fast paced and engaging.
Thanks to NetGalley and Berkley pub for my early copy of Love Letters to a Serial Killer.
You had me at serial killer. I figured this would be my kind of read for sure.
It was, but wasn’t what I thought it would be - which isn’t a bad thing.
Hannah starts a ‘relationship’ with a suspected serial killer through letters while he is in prison and about to go on trial for murdering four women. She goes back and forth quite a bit on if she feels he is guilty or not and I def feel that she sways towards wanting him to be a killer. She isn’t my fave character but hey, love to hate characters is a thing right?!
Spoiler free here but let’s say I did figure this out and if you read a ton of thrillers like I do, you most likely will pick up quickly on what’s really up here. I still enjoyed this one and it was an easy, quick binge read for me.
The last few sentences here left me wondering if there will be another book and if so - I would def read it. I will be keeping my eye on this author as overall it’s a fun murder, serial killer love story. 😂
