Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC!
This was the perfect book to satisfy a craving for a short holiday romance- with the audiobook lasting about 3 hours 25 minutes in length. Another huge plus for filling my love and ever-lasting craving to read Scottish and Irish romance novels.
This audiobook had two narrators- a woman for Harper's POV and a man for Reid's POV. They each had a great soft tone to their voice and the man did an excellent job with the Scottish accent for Reid. I found each of their voices engaging and added to the authenticity of the story and helped me filled immersed into the world.
I love how much was packed in a short novella without it feeling rushed either. The author did an excellent job at portraying a grumpy to sunshine romance while also incorporating Scottish culture and traditions. I loved seeing Reid and Harper's romance blossom and Harper finally finding where she is meant to be all in the setting of a Scottish pub (huge plus for this setting location as well). This story is the perfect cozy read for any November or December holiday indulgence. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a short adorable romantic read.
The perfect novella to get your romantic heart in the mood for Christmas! Travel to Scotland for this novella and fall in love with the pub, the people and the hot Scottish guy, um...yes please!!! The audiobook is outstanding as it has dual narration with the lilting Scottish accented man to make you swoon when it's from the male lead's perspective and a wonderful woman's voice that really brings the emotions to the forefront for the female character. I flew through this audiobook in one day as I just couldn't stop listening! I've been a fan of this author for a while now and once again I am thrilled with a new book from her! I can't wait for more!
I listened to this one as an audiobook and it was great. The Scottish accent…swoon! I loved the humor and premise of this one too. I think we’ve all wanted to escape and make a new life for ourselves so it’s really cool that this story made that come true. Overall, a very cute story that I’d highly recommend just make sure if you’re reading it you use the accent!
Was this story cheesy and quick? Absolutely. Did I still enjoy it? Again yes. This was a cute short novella that was a good quick read.
Short, sweet and incredibly charming, I enjoyed Tricia O'Malley's Starting Over Scottish. With just a hint of the paranormal, O'Malley truly captures the ambience of an olde Scots pub. An engaging romance works well too.
The audio version is nicely performed by Amy Landon and Will Watt.
A very fine listen.
Starting over Scottish is a cute rom-com novella. I enjoyed it very much. I will definitely look for other titles by Tricia O'Malley. She has another stand alone called "A Kilt for Christmas" coming out November 17 and is listed as a kindle unlimited selection. I can't wait! Go read this short, happy, spicy holiday novella. 3.75 stars
This was a cute little novella. It was exactly what I was expecting. I wish it was a little longer but understand it was a novella. The narrators were great, even with the heavy Scottish accent. The storyline and plot were fun and flirty and cute.
Will totally recommend this for a holiday romance.
Honestly I really did not like this book. I’m not sure what I expected going into such a short novella but this was way too insta-love for me and filled with lots of cringey moments. I probably would’ve enjoyed it way more if it was just insta-attraction/sex but insta-love is way too unrealistic. I felt like I knew nothing about both of the MCs and I just could not grasp their personality or connect with them. I thought the MMC was just ehh, as he’d act grumpy but then Harper would say stuff like, “we sent each other funny stuff throughout the day.” I also found it really hard to listen to with the accents and I think the male narrator was absolutely horrendous for the female MC parts. This is the first audiobook I listened to on 1.5x.
Thank you NetGalley for a chance to listen to and review this audiobook!
Starting Over Scottish by Tricia O'Malley is an adorably spiced Christmas novella! If you like grumpy/sunshine trope with excellent chemistry, adventure, and a sprinkle of spice and Christmas miracles..then this book is for you. I find some of the reviews of this book too harsh ( saying "it's unbelievable, not well developed" etc) it is a fictional romance novella - it is short, sweet, adventurous and to the point! Make a spiked hot chocolate and cozy up to read or listen - the narrators did a great job!
Thank you to Dreamscape Select, Lovewrite Publishing and NetGalley for this ALC!
I listened to the audiobook version of this fun Christmas novella narrated by Amy Landon and Will Watt. It is a mix of a “lost soul” and “fish out of water” storyline. The fish is Harper, an American woman who never seems to find the right job that keeps her interest for very long. The lost soul is Reid, a grumpy Scotsman who lost his parents nearly 20 years ago and his granddad a few months ago. The woman signs up for a Scottish pub experience (how to run one) and the man is the new owner of the pub who didn’t realize his grandfather’s housekeeper was selling pub experiences to the now closed pub. An immediate attraction is felt between them, although they try their hardest to resist. The townsfolk are charming (as is the ghost of Reid’s grandad) and circle around Harper to help get the pub up and running. This is a great holiday listen and I recommend it to anyone looking for a little escapism.
This was such a cute story! I smiled the entire time I listened to it. It was funny. The romance was emotional and sweet. My only complaint was that it was too short! The audiobook male narrator had a very sexy Scottish voice! I highly recommend this one! Huge thanks to the audiobook publisher and netgalley for allowing me to listen and review.
Thank you Dreamscape Select and NetGalley for audio ARC of the book.
Harper Scott signed up for a Scottish Pub Experience but from the beginning things don't go as planned. First her roommate/best friend had to stay home, then in Scotland it turns out that she will need to share the apartment with a handsome and angry Scottsman.
It is a typical grumpy meets sunshine story which results in sparks everywhere. It was a cute winter story that was filled with a humor.
Both Amy Landon and Will Watt did an amazing job narrating this story.
This was a fun Christmas-themed novella set in Scotland. The audio book and the book were told in dual POV and I enjoyed both of the narrators, they did an excellent job. This was short, sweet, with a good bit of quick spice (do not listen in the car with others!).
Harper, the American, books herself a holiday working in a Scottish pub over Christmas. Reed, the Scot, is back at his family’s pub after the death of his grandfather. Reed is ready to sell the pub and move on to his next adventure but Harper needs her trip to Scotland and a chance at running this pub. Add in a little forced proximity and some meddling townsfolk and you have a very pleasant holiday romp. I’m ready for the Hallmark movie version of this one to come out and I would probably watch it a few times!
Harper has felt like she has been going nowhere for a long time. Dead end jobs that rarely last more than 4 weeks. When her roommate suggests a working holiday to Scotland, she jumps at the opportunity. However, when her roommate finds out she is pregnant, she decides to still go. Scotland is not much different to the USA and how hard can running a pub be? Ha! Poor Harper does not know what she has gotten herself into.
Reid has returned back home to this small village in Scotland to sort out some family business after the death of his grandfather. He does not expect to see a woman (Harper) in his flat. A woman who says she has rented this unit to run the pub below for 4 weeks. She does not expect to see him straight out of the shower, without a towel (smirk). However, the dark shadows that follow Reid will make working holiday hard for the both of them.
This novella was a quick spicy read. I listened to this as an audiobook and the narrators were delightful. Mind you, Will Watt could read out a shopping list and it would be spicy! Harper and Reid are both facing their own difficulties and it was lovely to listen to them grow over the short novel. Wallace is the hero of the book. This was a fun, short Christmas read.
Big thanks to NetGalley, Dreamscape Select, Lovewrite Publishing and Tricia O'Malley for an early release copy of this audiobook and return for my honest review.
There was a handful of funny moments making this a cute romcom. I liked this but I struggled with it.
First, it’s a bit unbelievable. She was overly aggressive and stubborn about her reasons for staying. She’s a single woman, all alone in a new country, yet she has no concerns about her safety around this stranger? Too unbelievable. For this reason, I struggled to connect with the female character.
The fact that “he is no stranger to loss” is brought up soooo much. It got annoying after a while.
The audio was hard to follow at times. The Scottish accent is strong for a mere American as myself.
Thank you for this book in exchange for my honest review.
Unfortunately, it was a 3/5 for me. The plot was not as well-developed as I would have liked it to be and the narrator’s voice wasn’t engaging. However, I liked the male character’s Scottish accent and the grumpy/sunshine aspect, as well as the travel and adventure part of the story.
Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for the ARC of the audiobook "Starting Over Scottish" by Tricia O'Malley. This book is a fun quick listen with many likable characters. Definitely insta-love but it works! I was able to finish this book in about 3 hours so if you are working on a task it is worth a listen, The narrators were very good I especially loved the Scottish brogue, you can say anything in a brogue and it will be great.
I love that all of her stories have connections to each other it helps build her world even more. Reed is just grumpy enough that he balances Harper.
3 stars!
A feisty American lass, a broody Scotsman, and a pub in peril. Sparks fly and hearts melt in this cozy holiday Scottish romance. The perfect quick read or listen for those cold wintery days where a little holiday highland cheer can go a long way to brightening your day.
I listened to the audiobook and fell in love with how Amy Landon and Will Watts brough Harper and Reed to life. Their story albeit short was cozy, a bit toasty, and a whole lotta fun. Starting Over Scottish was a comfort read that one can just delight in. If you are like me a love a good Scottish burr, I highly recommend listening to the audiobook. Just brings this Scottish holiday romance to the next level!
want to thank NetGalley, Dreamscape Select, and Lovewrite Publishing for sending me an advanced copy the of audiobook of this novella in exchange for an honest review.
Harper Scott wants, no, needs a change. Her life isn't going how she thought it was going to go at this point in her life. She goes all in and arranges to go to Scotland; however, she didn't expect to be going alone, let alone meeting a handsome, yet infuriating man who happens to be the owner of the pub she going to be working in.
I actually really enjoyed this book. It reminded me of some of the romantic comedies that came out in the early 2000s and/or a classic Hallmark movie. If any of that interests you I would say check this out and see what you think. Overall, I would give this 3 out of 5 stars.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this audiobook. I really enjoyed the storyline especially that it took place in Scotland. I think the story suffered most due to the length. As it was very short it felt like the characters weren't very developed and the main relationship turned into an "insta-love". Their relationship was definitely more physical than anything and the love seemed to come quickly out of nowhere. I loved the warrior cat plot line and some of the background characters. If the story were a little bit longer and fleshed out it could have been fantastic. I did like they had two different voices for the audiobook.
