While I'm not a huge fan of rhyming books, I must admit this one handles the format fairly well. The sentences largely flow naturally. The plot is fairly simple and relies on the illustrations for most of the interest.

Silly little crocodile. The two-year-old loved this very funny book. Cute pictures with a fun story made for a great read aloud.

This funny children’s book tells the story of Jock the Croc, a crocodile whose mum gave him a Scottish name, because they are very popular.

I’m not entirely sure what the book was about to be honest. It felt a little confusing somehow, but it was still a fun read. I’m not sure how appealing it would be to a very young audience, though.

Jock the Croc is a Scotsman Crocodile, donning kilt and eating Haggis. His humour is expressed in the illustrations as well as in the writing which makes the book amusing to both adults and children. The Scottish themes are also somewhat educational.
The author suggests that apt names for crocodiles are Archibald and Pat, you may spy a Scottish crocodile in Africa or Scotland and if he looks you in the eye his super powers may convert you. Great read!

Thankyou Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for the free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. #JocktheCroc #NetGalley

Thank you to BooksgoSocial and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. Honestly, this is not one I recommend to my speech therapists. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me(perhaps it's a cute book for other students just don't think our students would understand it). The art though is adorable and I did appreciate the Scottish aspects. Because of these points, I have to give this a 3 out of 5 stars

My grandkids loved this book! They laughed several times while reading Jock the Croc. This book is silly and fun with cute illustrations.

An amusing whimsy, of a Scottish crocodile. What it seems to be about is not so much being a crocodile, and not even one in a kilt and sporran, but the joyful catchiness and fun of being Scottish. So I can't see too many millions of people engaging with that sentiment, but if you are of that opinion then this could be worth a quick look. I don't see it as anything to last in the memory, for it seems to jump from one setting to another, and from one topic to another fairly broadly, and the lines of the verses don't hold the same length and stress count throughout, but it is certainly not unenjoyable. Three and a bit stars.

I agree with the reviewer who said the illustrations brought Quentin Blake to mind. While reading this, I felt reminiscent of Roald Dahl classics, and the humor was adorable.
This African crocodile has a Scottish name and therefore spends his life exploring his Scottishness. It's hilarious. The language is silly and fun, and there is a happy ending with the crocodile being happy with his individuality.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this

Jock The Croc
SM Robert

Illustrated by - Evgenia Malina

🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is another great little quick read to share with your little ones either at bedtime or general storytime.

I loved that this was rhyming as this really makes the story flow nicely as you read it out loud.

The illustrations were quite simple and clear. Not too fussy, but with enough detail to prompt further discussion whilst reading .....not to mention that all the crocs were friendly and cute looking.....especially Jock in his bright orange kilt!

A fun read that I'm sure will become a firm favourite and be read over and over again.

💕Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my ARC copy - this is my honest review 💕

Jock the Croc
4 Stars
Release Date: 10/04/23

I picked this book for the adorably silly alligator and other wild animal illustrations. The characters shine in neutral tones, with a few pops of color here or there. This book has a reduced chance of causing excessive stimulation.

I love all the fun things Jock did with his Scottish kilt. The artwork complements the text. It's very amusing. This book uses rhyming in a sing-songy style. Children typically enjoy singing along as a group, and earworms happen. Jock the Croc would be a great choice for pre-school-first grade-age children.

Thank you, NetGalley and BooksGoSocial, for an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A fun rhyming tale + adorable illustrations by Evgenia Malina = a delightful book about letting your freak flag fly.

Sometimes it doesn't take much more than a kilt-wearing crocodile playing the bagpipes to totally make your day.

I'm not sure I get everything in this book...
Maybe that's because I didn't understand jokes in these pages but I did not laugh. The book was cute but not funny to me...
Nevermind my opinion, I'm a French bookseller so I probably just did not get it...

It is a funny but rather surreal book about a crocodile that has turned Scottish. It got me laughing out loud, so it is good.

This is the cutest book! This illustrations are wonderful. You learn all about rhyming and root for the Croc!

The author states that this book's purpose was to get adults and children laughing together. I read this alone, so can't attest to how it would appeal to a younger audience, but I needed something quick, non-taxing, and to pull me out of my anxious mind, and it definitely achieved that.

The story inside was told in rhyming couplets and with a quirky humour. It followed the story of Jock the Crocodile as he navigated his young life with the very 'in' Scottish name his mother called him, much to his father's despair. It was a quick read but every one of the pages gave me a reason to smile and I thought this a charming story overall, which I will definitely return to.

The full page illustrations were just as adorable and I loved all of the natural and animal imagery. There was something of Quentin Blake, who illustrated the Roald Dahl books, in the style and so I felt nostalgic when viewing the contents and its easy yet fun format.

This was so cute. My daughter read it and I laughed at the jock-obites. It's a very cute read and the pictures are great. My daughter and I loved it.

Jock the Croc was given a Scottish name at birth, because "Scottish names for reptiles are popular right now." Jock grew up to speak with a Scottish lilt and love all things tartan. He got lightly bullied for his Scottish interests, then the illustrations switch to humans telling the story of this crocodile. A human grandfatherly character tells children that Jock went to live in an African city full of Scottish crocodiles, collectively calling themselves Jock-obites. (Maybe Jock founded this city?) The book goes on from there with no discernable direction.

Overall this book left me confused. I'm not clear on the plot, the message, or had to read the forced rhyming prose. This book caught my eye by the cover and title, and I was eager to read it. Unfortunately it's all downhill from there.

I wanted to like this. There is a message in the story, which I liked, about being who you are and staying true to yourself. I also enjoyed the pictures but that's about it.

It was hard for me to get through, even though it was a short story. If it was hard for me, imagine children's attention spans.
The story tried to rhyme, without success. Some words may not be understood in other parts of the world, because it is based on Scottish vernacular.

Read this delightfully silly, colorfully illustrated book. Och aye the noo! See I am starting to think Scottish now.

Interesting story, my 4 year old was a little confused about the moral of the story. So if you hear a scot you'll become a scot?

Very sweet illustrations though!
