A body is found in an abandoned bunker, shot in the head from behind. The man is a newly elected politician, who was celebrating his win with family and friends the night before.
Winter Labey calls in Saskia to assist, and together they sift through clues and family and the closest friends are not as loyal as they might seem. And the past will always rear it's ugly head.
Saskia also finds that her brother has been up to no good, and has not been benefitting from her sessions with him.
Oh, wow! Gwen Bennett has done it again! I love the style of writing, and the flow of the investigation. I am sad that Saskia isn't able to enter a relationship and find happiness. Although the emotions and feelings that are sparked when she is with Winter adds some romance to the dark subject of the novels.
She is perceptive and her profiles are spot on.
I can definitely recommend this latest series.
5/5 stars from me.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review, and for introducing me to new authors I probably would never have heard of.
Secrets in Blood by Gwyn Bennett
I enjoyed this book inspite of reading it and realising it's the second title of a series. It didn't take the enjoyment away from it but I think I would have had a clearer understanding of the main characters if I had.
Great plot , great characters and a lovely setting. Lots of twists and intrigue to keep you guessing until the end , and now I'm off to get hold of a copy of the 1st book !
Saskia works as a psychologist at a prison on isle of Jersey and is called to assist with a murder of a prominent citizen. She has her own secrets though. Her father was a psychopath serial killer and her brother is also a psychopath whom Saskia has spent her life protecting.
The murder victim was a newly elected official, but was the murder political or is it more personal? Investigation uncovers numerous motives for hating the victim, but who hated him enough to kill him?
The mystery was intriguing and I enjoyed the setting on Jersey. The fact that Saskia protects her psychopath brother and hides their connection prevented me from finding Saskia a sympathetic character.
Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review Book 2 Saskia Monet.
Wow!! I really enjoyed catching up with Saskia and Winter and seeing how their characters develope to the point, I'm wanting them to be cohesive unit!! The Island of Jersey is so well described that I could picture the settings in my head. The story is well written and sets off of at a steady pace. DI Winter Labey calls forensic psychologist Saskia Monet to help him investigate the murder of a newly elected politician, Phillippe Cabot! The plot has plenty of twists with a few red herrings thrown in. I didn't foresee how the ending would happen. I hope there will be a book 3! I will be recommending this book.
Before reading this, I looked up my review for the previous book.
I feel I could actually write the same again here.
-interested to see where the Saskia/Winter thing goes
-Still not convinced David is that scary
-enjoyable crime.
So, all in all, its a good addition to the series.
Good book! This book had a bit of everything! It had suspense, Action, intrigue, mystery, murder, revenge, a great who done it, great plot twist, and some crazy twists and turns! The storyline was very interesting and kept me glued to my Kindle!! I definitely recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
I really enjoyed this book. The writing style is wonderful, the characters believable and likable, the mystery well-paced. I found myself rooting for Saskia and Winter, not only as great detective duo but also as a couple. And I usually hate romance. Not only that, Bennett also managed to start the plot for her next book here and I’m already looking forward to reading it!
I should note I have not read the first book in this series and although I feel I missed out on some of the relationship building, I didn’t feel like I needed it to understand or enjoy what was going on in Secrets in the Blood.
The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because, for me, it lacked that grip you occasionally get when reading a book. I never struggled to put it down (well, except for chapter 32), and honestly I feel like the big revelation/plot twist could have been executed better. But don’t let that stop you if you are looking for an easy to read and well thought out crime book!
A big thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and Gwyn Bennett for having this book available as early access.
