This book starts off with a bang when a college-aged daughter goes to visit her mother and finds her missing- front door open with her dinner still cooking in the kitchen. I liked the way the POV switches back and forth between the mother (leading up to the incident) and the daughter (after the incident). Overall, I thought the pacing was good, but not fast and zippy enough for me to really categorize it as a thriller- so more of a mystery. We get into some of the details of both of their lives (which aren't hugely interesting), but the tension between the back and forth and wanting to know what happened to the mother kept me reading.
This is my first Kimberly McCreight book, and it won’t be my last. This suspenseful novel captivated me in the prologue and kept me wanting more throughout the entire book. Like Mother, Like Daughter takes place in NYC where the mother, Kat, is known as a high-powered corporate lawyer to her family but this isn’t the only lie of hers that will be discovered. Kat is not a corporate lawyer, she is a successful fixer for some questionable clients of her firm. Unknowingly, this has put her and her family in danger. Her daughter, Cleo, is a student at NYU and is going through a rough patch in her relationship with her mother. When Kat goes missing, secrets of her past, her current clients troubles, and her watchful eye on Cleo become known as Cleo tries to find her mother. This twisting story has Cleo discovering secrets about her family that intertwine with her current life all while trying to find out what happened to her mom before it is too late. Throughout the book. The story shows a profound love between mother and daughter and the lengths a mother will go to protect her daughter to show that love and the love a daughter gives in return to do the same. A great twisting read that kept me coming back for more. Can’t wait to read more by Kimberly McCreight.
Thank you NetGalley, Kimberly McCreight, and KNOPF for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Wow. There were so many times throughout this book that I thought I had it solved. I even found myself thinking about the characters and what ifs when I wasn’t reading. If you’re looking for a good suspenseful and captivating story, I would definitely recommend this one!
I loved this book! I feel in move with the author when I read Reconstructing Amelia.
The bot is about Kat, a mother, wife and fixer, who goes missing and appears to be most likely dead.
Kat's daughter. Cleo, knows she sho6ukd let the police investigation but she's inpatient and needs to find her Mom before its too late.
Multiple timeframes and shifting perspectives. Good characterization. A New York setting. Just my kind of novel. Plus twists and turns. Enjoyed it a lot.
Thank you #NetGalley and #Knopf for the opportunity to read an advanced copy.
This was a good, quick read for a Sunday afternoon. The story is told from the perspective of a mother/daughter duo from before and after the mother goes missing. Lots of suspects and red herrings. While I did figure out who was sending the messages pretty early on, the ride getting there was fun and kept me turning pages. I loved the dual perspective and past/present timelines. Definitely give this one a shot!
Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Really enjoyed this book. It was not what I expected, and at first the back and forth timelines were a little confusing, but the author brought it all together at the end. The ending was very unexpected and well done. Certainly a page turner.
Great characters, good strong plot line, it certainly kept me guessing! As a librarian, and book club member, I’ll recommend to people looking for a mystery, suspenseful novel. It certainly kept me guessing until the end! 5STARS
Get. This. Book. I devoured this book! My husband even was curious about what was going on because I kept talking about it. I loved the plot line, the way the story unfolded and the characters in the book. It was beautifully written! I will be checking this authors work out more. Highly suggest!
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC. I really enjoyed this read… relatable mother/daughter dynamics, a slow burn mystery and smooth alternating POV. This book kept moving and entertaining the whole way through.
This book had me hooked from the very first chapter. Katrina and her daughter Cleo have had a challenging mother-daughter relationship since Cleo was a teenager. It's been a few months since they have seen each other, and Cleo agrees to leave the NYU campus and go to their family home in Brooklyn to talk to her mother. However, when Cleo arrives, she sees that the dinner her mother has been preparing is burning, the house is in disarray, and one of her mother's shoes is lying by the door with blood on it. Cleo isn't sure what to do now, but she knows she must see her mother again.
There are many twists and turns as Cleo begins investigating what happened to her mother despite the police discouraging her from doing so. The alternating timelines are seamless, and just when you think you have something figured out, there is a new twist. It is a fast read that you don't want to end despite wanting to know what happened to Kat.
Good suspense that is solved in 3 days. A successful female lawyer, Kat, goes missing from her home and her daughter, Cleo, reports it. There are several suspects, husband, work related, childhood past, friend, etc. Book isn’t too long so easy to stay interested in story. Explicit language of daughter not needed and takes away from the book. Good read
I would say 3 1/2 stars. Story was pretty good. Lots of characters and hard to follow at times. Lots of jumping around. Ending was ok.
I really enjoyed this book, but at times I felt like I needed that extra ouch to finish. Katrina goes missing and the twists and turns seem expected.
Like Mother, Like Daughter is a very propulsive and twisty thriller. It tells the story of Kat, a high powered attorney, who goes missing from her Brooklyn brownstone and her college aged daughter, Cleo, who is trying to find out what happened to her. We learn a lot about Kat’s bad childhood and her secret job at the law firm as well as learning about her failing marriage. There are many different plot threads and lots of red herrings.
The mystery and intrigue is really fun and I really enjoyed Kat and Cleo as characters and I liked the setup of the two timelines, Kat before her disappearance and Cleo after her mom’s disappearance. Some criticisms: At points there is so much going on in the book that it’s hard to keep straight and some of the plot points end up being pretty extraneous red herrings. I found the ending to be quite abrupt and a little disappointing.
Despite this, this book is a really fun read and definitely kept me guessing until the end.
Thank you to Knopf and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Cleo is a student at NYU. She has a dinner planned with her mom at her childhood home in Brooklyn. When she arrives late, she finds food burning in the oven and no sign of her mother. Cleo then discovers her mom's shoe under the sofa and it's bloody. Cleo knows that something terrible must have happened.
Cleo has no idea what though so she starts to dig deep to find out. She learns a lot of stuff she didn't know about her mother, which helps her understand her mother more than she did.
In this book, we follow Cleo as she digs deep into her mom's personal life. She will do anything she can to find her mom.
The chapters in this book are from Cleo's version and then her mom's version of the days leading up to her disappearance.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked how we got to read from Cleo's view and her mom's. The ending took me by surprise and I didn't see it coming at all.
I'd rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
The characterization and portrayal of the often-complicated relationship between mothers and daughters was done so well. The plot though, felt a little disjointed at times and I wasn't really sure of the purpose of the therapist transcripts throughout with their hard to read different typeface/font size.
Despite being slightly confusing at times (too many storylines?) I found myself unable to put this one down. I liked the timelines and the different narrators but do feel like there were some things that didn’t get tied up at the end.
What a thrill ride with an unexpected ending! Thoroughly enjoy a book where not only do I not know how it will end but where clues to the possibilities are so well placed that you find yourself thinking back and wondering how you didn’t put it all together.
