First, I want to say, this was one of those books that I said to myself, should I give up on the first chapter or should I keep going. Well let me say I'm so glad I kept going!
This is a great read full of interesting characters that take you on a twisted ride.
Kimberly McCreight did not disappoint with this one. A great exploration about a difficult relationship between a mother and daughter... and what they will do to save each other.
I have read several books by this author and I always enjoy the plots!
I'm always excited to see when she has a new book out.
Overall I really enjoyed the book a bit kept me engaged throughout!
This was a twisty thriller that kept me guessing until the last possible second. I loved the complicated characters and that the story was told from different perspectives. I felt like there were a few too many people to keep track of, which could just be a me thing. But I did have to stop a few times to remind myself who/what was being discussed. That’s my only critique though! It was a wild ride that i devoured, definitely recommend!
This was a good thriller that kept me guessing throughout the book. I loved the multiple POVs too. At times I would confused on who everyone was and how they were connected, but I just needed to really focus on what I was reading and I would remember.
This had all the components of a book that I love: first person narration, multiple POVs, rich people, New York, and multiple layers of different problems occurring at once. I enjoyed the legal jargon and felt it was more accurate sounding than other books with lawyer characters that I have read. Pretty good plot twist that I wasn’t expecting but guessed right before the reveal. Something that stuck out to me was how well the writing flowed! Such a fun read that I couldn't put down!
Random, but I love when a rich, powerful, snobby, and slightly terrible character uses their power and connections to dig up dirt and help people in a crisis. (Cough, Blair Waldorf.)
Thank you to NetGalley & Knopf for the advanced copy
Secrets, secrets, secrets abound in this book. This book kept my attention throughout. If you are looking for something fast paced this is for you.
I just couldn’t put this book down. There are some parts where it’s a bit slow, but don’t give up. There’s a lot of action & details, a lot of possible suspects & outcomes.
I thoroughly enjoyed how the title was super relevant to the book. Reading how this book floated between the past & present using two different perspectives. The storyline and plot twist was impeccable. Every time I thought I knew what happened, I was wrong.
I wanted to yell at my kindle screen, silently rooting for Cleo. Side eyeing other characters. It was great.
I would totally read this again.
I volunteered to read an ARC copy of this book thanks to NetGalley.
This book started off very good! I was very interested in the story between Cleo and her mom, but as the book went off I started to get bored and felt that it was dragging. I still really enjoyed the thriller, but to me the first half was much better than the second.
Keeping secrets never pays. And when will we ever learn?
Kat has been keeping secrets from her daughter Cleo for most of her life and probably would have kept on, until Cleo comes home, from her NYC dorm, unwillingly, to meet with her mother, with whom she usually has a very adversarial relationship. But at her mother's request, she agrees to come and walks in to find the house empty with food burning on the stove and broken glass with blood on the floor.
The police are called, and her dad comes in to the mess and they both immediately think the worst. As the police and detectives start their investigation, Cleo takes off on a quest of her own to find out what happened to her mother and along the way, secrets of her mother's come to light that are shocking and hard for Cleo to accept.
Good plot with an ending that I never saw coming,
Very good mystery surrounding her disappearance but the storytelling in back and forth presentation, between days leading up to her disappearance and today are confusing at times and not always well synched. Lots of past history introduced on her mom and Cleo herself but not always easy to follow clearly. Taking a few minutes to have to realize you are back in the present takes away from the growing thread of the story,
The characters are well defined and easy to see but some of the storytelling got laborious, for me.
Thank you NetGalley for this arc!! I gave this book a 3.5/5!! There were so many twists and turns that kept me reading. I loved how all the characters seemed to be untrustworthy and I have no clue who to trust!! I also loved the corporate law aspect of the book as a Suits lover!!
Thank to NetGalley for this advance copy of Kimberly McCreight’s upcoming release. There are a lot of layers to Like Mothers, Like Daughters. Initially you learn of a class action lawsuit brought on behalf of pregnant mothers against Darden Pharmaceuticals claiming they disregarded risks to pregnant patients and their unborn children.
Katrina is an attorney working with the firm representing Darden who has disappeared. Her daughter Cleo, despite a rocky relationship with her mother, is worried and scared and trying to find what has happened. The book is laid out from the perspectives of Katrina, in the days leading up to the disappearance, alternating with Cleo in the hours after. Relationships are revealed, past and present, of both Katrina and Cleo. As Katrina says, “Maybe no relationship was perfect. Maybe nothing was what it seemed.” The story is unveiled gradually with secrets revealed and twists that add to the complexity and suspense. A really good read.
This will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat! You’ll second guess everything and love every minute of it!
I really enjoyed this twisty thriller, Like Mother, Like Daughter, by Kimberly McCreight. This was my second book by McCreight, and I liked them both.
Katrina (Kat) is a fixer, but everyone around her thinks she is a patent lawyer, including her daughter Cleo. Cleo is a college student and in and out of trouble. She recently dated the campus drug dealer, and Kat's worry about her is limitless. At the beginning of the book, we learn Kat is missing - quite probably as a result of foul play. The book moves back and forth through time, mostly focused on the days leading up to when Kat goes missing and the present-day search for her (with a few forays into the further past).
We immediately start to suspect Kat's husband, Aidan, but the story unfolds with plenty of curveballs along the way. I felt empathy and sadness for the difficult relationship Kat and Cleo navigated. Anyone who's struggled with the push/pull of mother-daughter will probably identify with some aspects of their challenges.
Overall, an engaging read that kept me surprised up until the end. Recommended. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
For those like me who enjoyed "Reconstructing Amelia" and "A Good Marriage," Kimberly McCreight's latest novel "Like Mother, Like Daughter" is another fast-paced and twisty suspenseful story where you will be quickly flipping the pages in anticipation of what's going to happen next.
I found the alternative POVs and timeframes - Katrina in the past and Cleo in the present - compelling and easy to keep up with. They are the most important people in the story by far, and while neither one is perfect or even close, they are still sympathetic in many ways. I also wasn't sure what the conclusion would turn out to be, and always enjoy an unpredictable turn of events.
My one stumbling block was there were a lot of other side characters whose names sometimes blended together to me, including Katrina's coworkers and clients, her friends and neighbors, and people in her past. There are a lot of people to suspect, and you can never be sure of their true motives.
All in all, this story had an interesting mix of a scandalous business plot and a personal scandal from the past that combined to keep it interesting and keep me guessing.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC I received in exchange for my honest review.
This was excellent and it kept me engrossed throughout the entire book. I highly recommend that you read it. It is hard to put down!
Like Mother, Like Daughter opened with an intriguing situation, and kept me guessing as to what would come next all the way to the end. The characters were relatable, even if very different from anyone I know, and made me want to see how the events of the plot played out. That being said, the plot moved somewhat slowly for me in places, and the ending was somewhat anti-climatic. After the lead up, I expected something more at the conclusion. I would still recommend the book to friends or readers I know enjoy this type of story.
Great book, kept you guessing the whole time, I loved the realness of the mother/daughter relationships.
I loved this book!! What happened to Cloe's mom Katrina? Was she murdered? kidnapped ? Did her own dad murder her mom?? So many questions that need to be answered! Cleo is on the search to find out where is her mother and what was going on in her life? Not only does this book have so much mystery this is a very complex story of a mother and daughter relationship. How well do you really know your own mother and her past? Excellent book and such a great page turner! Love!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book! It did take me a while to get into but once I did, I was hooked. I loved the character development through the different formats used throughout the book (character journal entries and character therapy session transcripts). I thought there were a lot of good twists and turns throughout the book. My only complaint was the amount of cuss words (f words and others) and although it was needed to tell the story, the amount of references to drugs.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish, and genuinely didn't see any of the twists coming, especially the biggest twist. The beginning had a big rush and the middle slowed down a bit, but it was all worth it for the ending. The ending had me at the edge of my seat and I fighting sleep in order to finish the book. Kimberly McCreight is quickly becoming one of my favorite mystery/thriller authors.
