If you would have told John Stamos when he was a kid that he’d become a teen idol as Blackie Parrish on the soap opera “General Hospital”; star as Uncle Jesse in the hit sitcom “Full House”; sit in on drums frequently with the Beach Boys and count them among his closest friends; and play a doctor for four seasons on “ER,” as well as the Emcee in “Cabaret” and the leads in “Nine” and “Bye Bye Birdie,” all on Broadway” — well, he never would have believed you.

Then again, if you would have told Stamos that he’d get arrested for drunk driving after weaving his way through Hollywood while distraught fans shouted, “Uncle Jesse, pull over!” — well, he wouldn’t have believed you about that, either.

Stamos is now 60, and this candid, sometimes sad, heavily therapized memoir reflects all of these experiences and many more. There’s his ultimately failed marriage to actress-model Rebecca Romijn; his son-father friendships with comedian Don Rickles and actor Jack Klugman; his loving relationships with his parents and his current wife, actress Caitlin McHugh; and his originally tense, ultimately tight bond with “Full House” co-star Bob Saget.

Stamos isn’t afraid to name-drop (an ex-girlfriend, actress-model Teri Copley, has denied the book’s assertion that she cheated on him with “Who’s the Boss” star Tony Danza) and in a lovely coincidence, among those he encounters over the years is Winkler, whom Stamos finds both charming and genuine.

But he’s not afraid to be vulnerable, either, whether it’s discussing his path to addiction (a bottle of wine per performance to help him find the degenerate Emcee in “Cabaret”; then a bottle per show to help him dull the pain of not measuring up while following Antonio Banderas as Guido in “Nine”) or his difficulty in conceiving with McHugh and the joy that his 5-year-old son, Billy, ultimately brought into his life.

Stamos is a great mimic for many of the celebs he’s writing about, and reads the rest in gentle tones that might make you wish he was your Uncle Jesse, too.
