For those who don’t know I’m a former member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. When I first made the decision to leave, I was “going it on my own”, not doing anything in regards to church services. I was just winging it doing a home Bible study that included reading from a reading plan, doing a Scripture writing plan, and reading a Sarah Young devotional book. Then I decided to try online services for a couple of reasons. First, because we have one car for six people and we had two people going to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and two people going to Friendship Assembly of God. Second, I wasn’t quite ready at that point to try in-person services. I remembered a former friend of mine had gone to Elevation Church, so I decided to see if they had their services online at all. They did, so I spent several weeks watching the services there.

At that point, they’d started promoting Pastor Steven’s newest book, Do the New You: 6 Mindsets to Become Who You Were Created to Be. I quickly pre-ordered the book, but then found that it was available to request on NetGalley. I wasn’t expecting to be approved, but I was. And I am so glad I was.

Pastor Steven keeps it real. He gives examples from his own life, quotes from friends and acquaintances, and my favorite – he quotes from the Bible, complete with references to the Scriptures. He doesn’t dance around saying things that sound good just to fill out the book. Best of all, the mindsets make sense. Yes, they can be difficult to enact because human beings have this weird thing we do where we insist on tearing ourselves down instead of building ourselves up to do what we’re called to do. But they aren’t impossible – especially with God’s help.

For those who might be wondering, the six mindsets are:

I’m not stuck unless I stop
Christ is in me, I am enough
With God there’s always a way, and by faith I will find it
God is not against me, but He’s in it with me, working through me, fighting for me
My joy is my job
God has given me everything I need for the season I’m in

Note that these are not working on yourself without God’s help – these are working on yourself WITH God’s help. I’ve read so many books by pastors that are in the Christian Living and Christian Self-Help categories that give great tips, but forget that God needs to be part of the plan. Not so with Pastor Steven! He fully admits you’ll need God and that God has and will give you everything you need to be who He created you to be.

I loved this book so much and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to move themselves closer to God and closer to who they were created by God to be. You might not think you have what it takes to do the thing God has called you to do, but I’m telling you, you do and this book will help you on the way. This was a five-star read and I can’t wait to see what he writes next.

Pastor Steven Furtick's new book, "Do the New You," is a great guide for people wanting to change and grow spiritually. He shares his wisdom and experience as a pastor to encourage readers to embrace change and find their true purpose.

The main idea of the book is about embracing new things, both in our relationship with God and in our personal growth. Furtick talks about how real change starts from inside us, and he urges us to let go of old habits and beliefs that hold us back.

Furtick's newest release offers six mindsets meant to help you realize and become who you were created by God to be. Each of the mindsets is further accompanied by a new action step toward the "new you." In this book, Furtick offers these six mantras of positive self-talk to a new way of living:

1. I'm not stuck unless I stop.
2. Christ is in me. I am enough.
3. With God, there is always a way, and by faith I will find it.
4. God is not against me, but He's in it with me, working through me, and fighting for me.
5. My joy is my job.
6. God has given me everything I need for the season I'm in.

This is definitely not my favorite Furtick book. And, this is going to sound harsh but if you could not tell from the title or the cover of the book, perhaps you noticed it in the six mantras: this book has more to do with me, myself, and I than it does the actual transforming power of the gospel. This book is likely too religious for those seeking a self-help book but should also be too me-centric for those searching for a Christian living book.

Furthermore, the language of the book at times exhausted me. There was frankly too many attempts at creative wordplay like "do the new you" and "(k)new you." For a book that is purports itself to share the gospel and teach about God, you will find one word used ad nauseam throughout: you.

Without a doubt, Furtick is a gifted communicator. As such, there are some memorable lines and a positive, uplifting message throughout that will certainly pull readers in. Nonetheless, this book offered nothing really new to the genre of self-help and, even worst, is a detriment to the topic of what Christian living should look like.

I'm grateful to NetGalley and FaithWords for the advanced readers copy in return for my honest review.

I am an avid reader. I literally read three books at one time. When I started do the new you I was reading two other books. However, I was so captivated by this book that I just read it straight through. I couldn’t put it down.

Many times books written by pastors have a lot of examples about their members and about what they saw in counseling others. But Steven Furtick was real and personal. Just about every example in this book was an example from his life. As someone who is constantly stuck in her head always second-guessing herself, I really felt like he understood my struggles enough to move me forward.

Each of the six mindsets are developed so well, and so deeply that by the time you get to the end of the section about a specific mindset, it is in your head. I literally found myself telling myself these mindsets as I was going throughout my days. I had the mindsets committed to my memory, and they are helping me reverse the negative thoughts that I find swirling around my brain at times.

As a person that is very committed to self development and spiritual growth, I go to therapy, I spend 30 to 90 minutes reading my Bible daily, journal and pray every morning. But life happens. The world hits me hard and I need practical things like this book to reach for in those moments.

Do the new you is not only a practical guide on improving your mindset, it also gives you biblical principles to apply to these mindsets. I highly recommend this book that will impact your life in a positive way.

In Do the New You, Steven Furtick explored how we can discover our God given identity. He explained how God wants us to see ourselves as He see us. The goal of this book is to assist readers in aligning our mindsets with God’s vision for our lives. In the book, he explored six key declaration readers can declare over their lives daily. Some of these include, “I’m not stuck unless I stop, Christ is in me. I am enough, God is not against me, but he’s in it with me, working through me, fighting for me, and much more. He begins the book by looking at Jeremiah and how he became a prophet. God had to help him see how He chose him first and how He created him in his mother’s womb. God knew him before anyone else and He knew the real him. God appointed him and when Jeremiah began to believe that everything radically changed.

One of my favorite discussions was about how Christ is inside us and we are more than enough. He stated how many us are spending our time wrestling with ourselves and doubting who we are. There are countless voices who are trying to make us feel less than and we’re constantly reminded of how we are falling short of someone else. We are accepting our insufficiency as our true identify. He explained how Christ is inside us and He told his disciples that we must realize that He is the Father and you are in me and I am in you (John 14:19-20). Jesus also goes on to teach a lesson about how He is the vine and we are the branches and how we can bear fruit. Steven reminded readers that we are sufficient in Christ and we don’t have to prove our worth. He encouraged readers to accept themselves and become the best version of you. He told a personal story about how his son, Elijah was taking a fishing trip with his friends. This brought back memories of how he would fish with his own dad but didn’t enjoy it. He never taught his own son how to fish and he felt like a bad dad for not showing him. He felt like he wasn’t enough of being a father. He had to be careful not to turn this into his identify. Instead, he had to remember that Jesus is enough and our identity needs to be in that.

I would recommend this life changing book to anyone is struggling with being themselves and they comparing themselves to others and feeling less than. This book is very powerful in helping readers to change their mindsets and align their thoughts to match Christ. I immensely liked how the story about the trading card and how he willingly fell for a trick from the owner when he opened up a Michael Jordan card. He didn’t know the value and worth of the card and he used this example to explain to readers how being inexperience and the dangers of not recognizing our worth. We can be handing over our character, confidence, peace, good reputation, and joy and missing out on God’s best for our lives. This book is very insightful and I believe is one of the best from Steven. The stories are relatable and if we would put into practice the principles we will see our lives changed!

1000 stars ⭐️. This book is amazing. It was exactly what I needed. I appreciate that he is doing sermons along with his book because it just helps you get a deeper understanding. I love how pastor Steven explained concepts and makes it relevant to our lives. I’m so glad that God help Holly to helped him see what God needed him to do but God already knew what needed to happen before he could write this book. Let’s all go and do the new you the one that God always knew and let’s get off that treadmill together.

Like having a Christian life coach at the ready!

Pastor Steven Furtick’s latest book is his most practical yet with a message that resonates with all ages and stages of life. Based on Biblical examples of how God sees us, Pastor Furtick gives us six mindsets that help us align our image of ourselves with the image that God knew even before he formed us. Each mindset can stand alone, but they are intertwined as well. Having this book is like having a Christian life coach on my shelf that I can return to when I get off track with my thinking.

The world would like for us to see ourselves through the lens of our successes and failures, but this book points us to the way God sees us, before all of that, and helps us grow into the version of ourselves that God always knew we could be, the (k)new self.

This book is great for anyone who wants to be more aligned with the self that God knows is possible – the young person striving to find their way, the new parent wanting to be the best that they can be, and the retiree looking for the next chapter in life.
