I always enjoy the fast pace of a Daniel Hurst book and this one did not disappoint. Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in advance of publication.
This is the third book in the series. I would think reading them in order would be very helpful to understand what's happening but this could also be read as a stand alone. Great story told by two different POV of the wife and the mistress. I especially liked the ending. I love books by this author; one of my favorites.
I think The Doctor's Wife trilogy just may be my favorite trilogy of all time. This book was fantastic, truly could not put it down. I wish these books could go on forever. Unputdownable from the first page until the very last word. Absolutely loved it!!
The doctor’s mistress is book three in ‘The doctor’s wife’ series and after reading the first two books, I was excited to get stuck into this instalment.
Alice has been released from prison after wrongly accused of murdering her husband Drew and has a young child. She is also in a relationship with Tomlin one of the detectives in the search of Fern. Fern is adamant not to get caught. Even going as far as changing her name. But Alice can’t wait to find Fern and seek her revenge.
Daniel Hurst has written another stonking gripping thriller, and he seems to never disappoint. This has a solid storyline, and likable characters, told in both their POV’s we learn what going in both their lives. Which in some parts of the story made me feel sorry for them. The author write a great conclusion to the story which I wasn’t expecting. 5 stars from me.
I think I’m proud to announce that this is the absolute last book by Daniel Hurst I ever read. Lately, it has been like watching some horrible disaster happening, not being able to stop it and not being able to turn my head away from all that mess unfolding right in front of my eyes.
Now that I am officially DONE, I keep thinking and mentally going back to all the other books I have read by Daniel Hurst. I keep wondering how come I used to think his writing was good. I keep wondering how come I used to think I wanted to read all the books he wrote. Because it has always been there. All this – whatever it is, this writing thing he does, the way he does. I guess it might have been a sad case of not knowing any better on my part. It might have been a sad case of me not having read all the great books (written by other authors) I have read now.
I somehow enjoyed The Doctor’s Wife. I honestly thought it was a great book.
Then there was book two, The Doctor’s Widow. It was horrible, unbearable, and dumb.
And, despite that, I knew I was going to read book three. Because, well, what if it is good? What if book two was just a fluke? The Doctor’s Widow.
Do you know how there is a standard of one kilogram stored at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures? If there was a Bureau of Bad Books, this book should go there.
Although, it might be a tough choice between this book and some other 2023 releases of Daniel Hurst.
I used to think that he may have hired a bad ghostwriter. Then I thought that maybe he had a ghostwriter at first and then started writing on his own. I have no clue. I don’t know if his publishers know what is going on there. I doubt he himself is ever going to admit what exactly has been going on with his writing.
He has a recurring theme of a very bad case of “a man writing women”. Women are dumb. Women are shallow. Women talk like they have zero intellect. Women are accessories to men and their greatest accomplishments are their spouses. Now, it seems like Mr. Hurst has entered his era of knowing how women do all things children-related. Yeah, ok, I did some spying, he indeed has a fresh baby in his family. Well done, dude, babies are cool, but your writing isn’t.
If I am sticking to my original plan of talking about The Doctor’s Wife series book only today, then I’d like to point out some random facts. In the world according to Mr. Hurst, all women can pay using sex. And that sex is super expensive. All doctors are super fancy and super-rich, even basic countryside GPs, and it is the greatest honor ever to be in the company of any doctor. 20k is enough for a downpayment for a place to stay in the UK, nowadays. Bank clerks want to know why you are withdrawing money (instead of being suspicious if you bring in huge wads of cash). On and on I could go. This dude has no idea how the internet works, and his idea of society is that of a sad boomer.
The premise of those books was really good, I have to admit. But the execution? Nah. Never again. Done.
And the ending? Omg. No. Just, no.
I know that there are people out there who still think Daniel Hurst writes good books, yay, I’m happy for you! I’m sure there are going to be 9 billion other cookie-cutter books by him just like those, where he writes women again and fails miserably. If that is your jam, go for it. Enjoy.
p.s.
I feel kind of very bad leaving a one-star review, but as far as I know it is best to leave a honest and bad review instead of writing a fake and sugar-coated one. Lately I have heard that there are people out there who will pick out books based on one-star reviews only. Maybe mine will inspire someone to find their next favorite book if this is exactly what they are looking for.
This talented author has written a page turner. Realistic characters keep the story moving quickly. Secrets and lies…friendship and dealing with family…the past changes the future…what will happen next? Revenge…murder…all of these factors make up a recipe for disaster. The different voices were confusing, but the book was a good read. Thanks Netgalley.
Thanks to #NetGalley and #Bookouture for the ARC #TheDoctorsMistress by #DanielHurst. This their book on a series was the best way to end this drama between two scorned women. I loved the way it was wrapped up and all the drama that led up to this twistful ending.
3.5 stars. I liked the way the book ended, but the story fell a little flat for me comprares to the previous 2 books, as not a lot happened in my opinion.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for access to this Arc in exchange for my honest review.
Alice was the other woman in the Devlin marriage and when Drew was murdered she was wrongly convicted, eventually being released when the police realised they'd got the wrong woman and, while she's trying to build a new life for herself and her baby, the real culprit is on the run and Alice is determined to get revenge on the woman that ruined her life, but will Fern have her own plans to ensure she doesn't get caught, or has her luck finally run out?
The Doctor's Mistress is the third and final book in this series by Hurst and is told from the perspective of Alice who still lives in Aberness, Scotland and Fern who is currently holed up in Cornwall hoping she doesn't get caught. Whilst I had some sympathy for Alice in book two, let's face it nobody wants to be arrested for a murder they didn't commit, she was quite annoying in this one and really needed to take some responsibility for having an affair with Doctor Drew in the first place! This was another fast paced tale with short chapters that kept me second guessing the outcome throughout and I was happy with the conclusion reached in this finale.
I'd like to thank Bookouture and Netgalley for the auto approval, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.
I think having read the first two books on the series would benefit the reading of this book.
I found the first half or so of the book to be a repetition of the background of the first two books, which is appreciated having not read them, however had I read them I would have been disappointed to go over all of the information again. I also had a hard time following the plot line and keeping straight whose story I was in at any given time.
Thank-you to Netgalley for an advanced copy to review.
The Doctor's Mistress is the third installment in the Doctor's Wife series. I really enjoyed the first two books so was really excited to get stuck into this. It was a great read, and I loved getting Alice's perspective.
The storyline was interesting, with a few exciting twists and turns and I enjoyed the different perspectives each chapter. I thought it carried on well from the first two books, but the recaps were detailed enough that it could be read as a standalone.
The ending did wrap everything up nicely, however it did fall a bit flat for me. I would have liked to have seen a different outcome.
Overall, a great read and lovely to catch up with familiar characters. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
This is the third book is the Doctor's Wife series by Daniel Hurst. Fern is still on the run. She has no intention of going to prison for her dirty deeds. However, the mistress, Alice, who was sent to prison for Fern's crimes but then was released, has other plans. She is out for pure solid revenge. Alice is doing everything is her power to track down Fern and get her to pay for what she's done.
This was an action packed book that went back and forth between Alice and Fern's lives. Secretly, I was still rooting for Fern even though she really went to extremes. I'm assuming this will be the last book in the series, because it wrapped up very well and had a very satisfying ending.
This is one of those books that kept me interested throughout the entire book. I couldn't wait to see who was going to what and who would win out in the end. 4 solid stars from me.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. I greatly appreciate it. I do recommend this book providing you read the first 2.
Another good read in this series. Like the others in the series, it moves along at a nice pace and the chapters that largely alternate between characters help with this too. I didn't find this one quite as compelling as the previous two but it was still a good read.
I've been WAAAAAAITING for Alice's POV and this one did not disappoint! Hurst is back with his quick writing, snappy pacing, and plenty of twists and turns to throw you off just when you think you have it all figured out. This series is the first of Hursts' I've read and it won't be my last. While a lot of content and development isn't super deep, they still make for easy reads to help you get out of a reading slump. I didn't expect Fern's ending, but it still felt true to the storyline. Thanks again for the ARC - I look forward to reading more!
Another brilliant book in the Doctor Series, easy to follow with great characters.
Plenty of twists and turns which kept me involved in the storyline.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC which I have no hesitation in recommending.
I held off for so long with a Hurst experience. From what I’ve gathered, I assumed his books were popcorn thrillers similar to Freida McFadden. Then I noticed this was on NetGalley and thought why not.
Before I get to it…. this was the 3rd installment in a series, however, can be read as a standalone. We are given the backstory here that allowed me to be completely caught up. Thank goodness I didn’t read the others.
Folks, this is not good writing. The sentencing was cut and dry. It seemed liked when whoever’s point of view it was, it just lacked emotion… hell… and common sense for that matter. I thought to myself, these characters must be the most senseless people with all their idiotic decisions made. Just why?
** First of all - If you are an alleged serial killer and evading arrest, you’ve got to be some sort of criminal mastermind. At least a wee bit. Fern, the serial killer speaks like someone who hasn’t a clue to what they’re doing. No friggin’ way would she be able to manage escape and stay off the radar.
** People don’t just walk around and find someone to make them a fake ID to flee the country and trust them to do it. Like wtf. Then to end up just robbing them and fleeing the scene.
** The mistress is just as special as she is. Her # goal is to hunt down the wife who killed him and tried to frame her for his murder.
** Did I mention the mistress has a new fake boyfriend who happens to be a detective… or was once a detective? His role is to actually take care of Alice’s (mistress) baby because Alice is quite the shitty mother. He’s basically acting as a sole parent. What in tarnation is that all about?
BTW, both wife and mistress are left behind with babies. What a hot freaking mess! Terribly unbelievable. Clueless characters. Hot mess of a plot. With that said, no more Hurst for me.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced readers copy. All opinions are my own. Release date December 6, 2023
The Doctor's Wife #3
I was the other woman. The mistress. Everyone blamed Dr. Drew Devlin's death on me. And I've paid the price for loving the wrong man. Now, I have dark circles under my eyes because I can't sleep at night. I lost everything - friends, family, my home, even my freedom. Drew's devious wife Fern tore my whole world apart. And she thinks she's got away with murder. But she's wrong. It's time for revenge. For myself.... and my baby.
I couldn't wait to start reading this book. I wanted to know what was going to happen to both Alice and Fern. Fern is on the run for murdering her husband, Alice has been liberated, and she is out to get her revenge on Fern for setting her up for the Doctor's demise.
The characters are well portrayed. I really wanted to see Fern get her comeuppance for all the despicable things she's done. I wanted Alice to fin inner peace. But this is a Daniel Hurst book, and nothing is as you'd expect it to be. The ending came as a complete surprise. I never thought this would be how it would end. I would have preferred a different ending.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #DanielHurst for my ARC of #TheDoctorsMistress in exchange for an honest review.
I knew The Doctor's Mistress had great potential based on how The Doctor's Widow ended (Book #2), and I was not let down. This is the best book in the series! The story is told in first person narration by Fern, Alice and Detective Tomlin as all are trying to put their lives back together. And we get to see other sides to them too. There are also some new characters who contribute to additional challenges and complications in their lives. I finished this book in less than a day as it was hard to put down. There are plenty of tense moments, twists and turns. It was a quick, enjoyable, easy read. You should definitely read books 1 and 2 first as they help to complete the whole picture, although Hurst does jot the reader's memory as to what has happened in the past. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the eARC.
Another gripping and twisty installment from one of my favourite authors.
This time the action is driven from Alice's perspective; recently released from prison where she was being held for a murder she did not commit, hell-bent on revenge, and now with a baby following her surprise discovery that she was pregnant.
Fern is still on the run and has surprises of her own.
I've thoroughly enjoyed The Doctor's Wife series and the only bad thing is that it seems this could well be the final installment.
After reading the first two books in the series, I couldn't wait to get my hands on The Doctor's Mistress. Unfortunately, it fell kind of flat for me. Alice was almost unbearable, with her outward attitude and lack of connection with her daughter Evelyn, she was just plain miserable (and yes, I get she went to prison for the murder of Drew, but she was released and was given a second chance at life). It almost felt rushed, and kind of thrown together. Without going into to much detail and spoiling the story line/ending, I'll just say it was a little too unbelievable how feelings were changed and the ending played out.
Thank you to Netgalley, Daniel Hurst, and Bookouture for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Publication date for The Doctor's Mistress is December 6, 2023.
