I really tried to get into this one but it just was not doing it for me. The plot was moving slowly and it did not fully grab my attention so I had to stop reading.

This is definitely an unforgettable storyline. I really enjoyed this engaging and unique book. It’s an easy read with plenty of twists, which makes it a great thriller overall.

A suspenseful story that hooks you from the beginning and doesn't let go! I can't say enough good things about this author. If you haven't read one of her novels yet, this is your sign to go get one!

An intriguing read. I wasn't keen on a couple of characters, the daughter and son in law, but it certainly added another dimension to the plot.. it didnt take me long to read this book as I was very curious as to the outcome. Have to say , the outcome didn't disappoint!

This was such an interesting premise for a thriller. It’s very entertaining and I was so anxious for the secrets to come spilling out. There are shocking revelations and lots of twists. I didn’t really find any of the characters to be likable, but I think that was kind of the point. There is a major twist at the end that I definitely didn’t see coming!

I loved this one and was sucked in right from the first page. Totally addictive. A great story. Loved the twist at the end. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.

This was not my favorite book. I found the premise to be strange and uncomfortable. The whole idea of the daughter marrying her mom's ex was too much. There were twists in the end that I did enjoy. I would prefer those twists to come after a better premise.

Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for this arc in exchange for an honest review.

This book had some very good twists and turns but the middle kinda bored me. The ending did pick back up and I really enjoyed that part.

I will be checking more out by this author. I recommend this book because it did have very twisted parts in it that others might like.

We have a daughter marrying her mother's ex-husband. The mother does not trust her ex-husband and feels like he is up to no good. The daughter is fragile and in love, and also expecting a child. The mother becomes increasingly worried and will stop at nothing to protect her daughter.

This book just did not do it for me at all. It was super boring! It dragged on and was repetitive. I found myself skimming and wishing for it to be over. I gave 2 stars instead of 1, as there were some very limited blurbs of excitement. But wow, this was a painful read. So many times I wanted to give up, but it thought it would get better. Nope! The only somewhat okay part of this book was the ending. However, the ending did not connect with the rest of the book or fit in with the son-in-law.

I also wouldn't classify this as a thriller. More like a domestic drama. The synopsis led me to believe that this book was going to be a lot more exciting than it actually is AND also an actual psychological thriller. I think the synopsis should be re-worked, as it is misleading. There is nothing thrilling about this novel.

Also, such an odd and unrealistic concept for a book. I find it highly unbelievable that the daughter did not know she was marrying her mother's ex-husband, even though she was out of the country when they were married. We live in an age of phones and social media. There's no way the daughter never saw pictures of this man! Even if she did not see pictures, she must have known his full name. Completely ridiculous.

Thank you Joffe Books and NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Ooft! What a story - this reads like a masterclass in truly fantastic psychological fiction! The author I was not previously familiar with, but will most definitely be my radar for future reads!

The story comes from the authors dream/nightmare of a daughter marrying her mothers ex-husband. To add insult to injury, in this novel, the newly weds move in with said mother./mother in law! Bethan, the mother, lives a rural existence in the Welsh mountains. Her beautiful and super smart daughter, Cerys, has dropped out of veterinary college and pitches up, pregnant and newly married, to move in with her mum - (her husband being somewhat lacking as a provider). It is not long before the mind games start as son in law/ex-husband, Luke, makes a series of plays for Bethan, claiming that it is her, rather than her daughter, that is the true love of his life.

This is a story that features strong references to the past, as we learn some truly shocking events that have led us to the present day. While I won't say more, (as spoilers will surely not be welcomed), I will just say, read/devour/enjoy this read - I really cant see anyone not enjoying this gripping thriller!

My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy.

My first read from this author and so addictive. Beth lost her husband so when Luke came along she loved the attention they married and lived on her farm. but she divorced him as a womaniser. Cerys her daughter never knew Luke and she rings her mum up to tell her she marrying a man. but it is Luke wont say no more but the twist and turns in this book will wont to keep you reading to the very end

Cerys accidentally marries her mother Beth's ex-husband Luke. Cerys is pregnant so she and Luke move back into Beth's farmhouse. The story is told from the perspective of Cerys and Beth in alternate chapters. As the story evolves, Beth seems to be very determined and dangerous and has a lot of secrets; Cerys comes over as a bit wet, but selfish and is also prepared to lie to get her own way. A whole host of unpleasant characters.

This one was hard to get into.
I think I was stuck on the fact that the daughter married her mothers ex-husband and didn’t know this? It just seemed to unbelievable.
I stuck with it and there were some good twist. But overall it was just okay to me.
Thanks

Loved this author! You will not see the twists and turns coming! I would've liked it if the daughter was more likeable. Overall a great book!

The Son-In-Law
Jane E James

🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is the second book by James that I've read recently - and I loved Not My Child, so knew that I was going to be quickly sucked into the drama of this book too!

Once again the writing style really draws you in at the start and I was totally gripped, struggling to put this one down.

I absolutely love the way this author puts a unique twist on a family drama to create a really uncomfortable setting for our characters.

Here, Beth welcomes her daughter and new husband to her home - Cerys now pregnant and the husband, Beth's own ex-husband!!

I felt on first hearing this, that it was a little beyond belief - how did Cerys not already know who this man was etc etc. - but I soon got stuck right into the storyline and went along with it.

The writing was exciting and the pace fast with lots of twists and turns and I really wasn't trusting any of them - I'm not even sure that I liked any of the characters - but this really suited the plot and kept me on edge throughout!

I liked that the story was told via the two different pov's, Mum and Daughter, as this always allows you to dig right down into their thoughts and feelings!

I loved that at the end of this one, James admits that the idea for this one came from a strange dream that she'd had - I love knowing the inspirations for books ....and can't wait to see what odd dreams might be revealed in the next book.

Beth lives a quiet life on a farm in the mountains. Beth lost her husband after he committed suicide. However, Beth's husband harboured quite a few secrets. Beth remarried after her husband's death and while they are now divorced, Beth is still not a fan of her now ex. Her daughter, Cerys, is now married and pregnant with her first child. Should be an exciting time for the family, right? Except Cerys has married Beth's now ex-husband. The newlyweds move in with Beth as Mr. Wonderful has recently lost his job and Cerys dropped out of school.

While the premise seems a bit much (daughter marrying Mom's ex), I really enjoyed this book. The back and forth between Beth and Cerys' points-of view made the story unfold in a unique way. The big twists didn't happen immediately but there was enough uncertainty to keep me entertained. I was left guessing more than once as to Mr. Wonderful's motives. There were also a few different characters thrown in to make you question the truth (ex-partners, an odd neighbour, etc).

The characters were good. The setting was great. I enjoyed this book and the more I sit with it after reading, the more I realize how much I did enjoy it.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher, for the opportunity to read this for free. This was my honest review.

What would you do if your daughter moves back into your home after marrying YOUR ex-husband? Talk about a drama filled book. I felt like this was a Lifetime movie in book form. This book held so many secrets and twists, some of which I never saw coming. While this wasn't a literary masterpiece, this book kept me intrigued throughout it's entirety. The chapters were short, making this a quick read. Overall, this is a 4 star book for me. Thank you NetGalley, Jane E. James, and Joffe Books for my advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
