Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for this copy.
This book is told between mom Beth and daughter Cerys, which I always love alternating POV’s. This book was a solid 3. It kept my interest and the twists were solid, I guessed the main twist early on. As for the characters I didn’t like any of them and rolled my eyes at Cerys the most. But overall I enjoyed the book.
The Son-in-Law by Jane E. James.
I just met my new son-in-law . . . And he’s my ex-husband.
Really enjoyed this book. I did like Beth. Twisty and gripping.
Thank you NetGalley and Joffe Books for the chance to read this book. The story is told in alternating voices of the mother Beth and daughter Cerys. However, Luke is the main character as he is the son-in-law of Beth. There are undertones of something sinister but it. The theme is of bigamy, deception, kidnapping, manipulation, obsession and strange as it seems, love. But the story is too far-fetched and hard to believe. On the plus side the chapters are short although it's a long book. I doubt if I'd recommend it unless someone likes fairytales. It doesn't have a ring of truth.
Beth tries her hardest to welcome her pregnant daughter, Cerys, and her new son-in-law, Luke, into her home, but there is just one little problem… Luke is her ex-husband. Luke is a womanizing, cheating liar and Beth cannot stand that he is with her beautiful and fragile daughter. Beth will stop at nothing to keep her daughter safe and to keep her own secrets hidden. Does Beth really have her daughter’s best interest at heart? Or is she more concerned with protecting herself?
The concept behind this novel was very interesting, but I personally did not feel it to be all that well developed, especially considering how long the novel was. The pacing was incredibly slow for a thriller, and I found myself skimming to get through the novel. There were several chapters I felt could have been left out entirely and about 80% of the novel was Beth and Cerys rehashing the same things over and over again just in different ways. The entire son-in-law concept was not all that thrilling and nothing really shocked me in regards to his actions/behaviors. The novel was so slow paced and then at the end of the novel everything started happening all at once and it was too much. I saw where the author was going with the twist at the end of the novel but it really didn’t connect at all with the son-in-law part of the plot. Overall, it was too slow paced and not exciting enough for me to recommend.
I really enjoyed this story of buried secrets, murder, lies and betrayal. It was a true PAGE-TURNER, thrilling ride with a few well placed and shocking twists! Definitely a 5 star read for me!
Beth opens up her home to her daughter who is newly married to her very own ex-husband, Luke.
Luke, the man Beth married while her daughter was away for 3 years, is obsessed with Beth, Not wanting to let Beth go, he begs her back. She denies him, then he shows up at her door, her pregnant daughter in tow, 6 months later.
Beth knows his feeling for Cirys are not genuine.
What does Luke want? Revenge? Beth? Money?
How can her daughter not see Luke for who he really is?
There are secrets to be revealed, long, dead and buried secrets. Cirys discovers why her father committed suicide when she was just 9 years old. She also starts to get close to her mother’s best friend, Bryn who has secrets of his own. Her loving, attentive husband start to reveal his true colors and another wife comes out of hiding. A whole lot of discoveries ensue leading to a shocking conclusion.
Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for this advanced readers copy in exchange for my opinion!
Thanks to #NetGalley and #JoffeeBooks for the ARC #TheSonInLaw by #JaneEJames. This book is crazy in so many ways. All the relationships intertwined with each other resulting in tragic endings and then all wrapped up in an explosive plot ending.
This book was recommended to me by my sister. I admit to being baffled by the premise and still feel the plot was somewhat far-fetched (daughter marries mum's ex-husband after unknowingly falling for him before realising who he is...) That said, it proved to be a gripping, fast-paced read with a complexity of characters.
Twists, turns and revelations galore.
Beth lives in the family home - a Welsh farmhouse. Like everything else, farming has become a harder way to make a living and her late husband built a cabin to let out to diversify and increase their income. However, she's facing the loss of that income as her daughter is returning home to live there, pregnant and with her new husband in tow. And to make things worse, her son-in-law turns out to be her ex-husband . . .
I felt sorry for Beth from the very beginning in this one; what an insidious position to be put in! Daughter Cerys only sees the good in everyone but Beth, with her decades of experience, doesn't trust the son-in-law one bit. As things continue, there are bound to be some ups and downs but the revelations come thick and fast in this one. I really enjoyed it up until about the last half-hour or so, and then I began to feel that there were just too many twists and turns and, in all honesty, it rather spoiled it for me. Less would definitely have been more. A good read, just not a great one. 4*.
My thanks to the publisher for my copy via NetGalley; this is - as always - my honest, original and unbiased review.
i didn't know what to think or who to believe and the final twist absolutely floored me. Amazing read
The Son-In-Law is the first book I have read by this author and I enjoyed it very much. Beth's daughter Cerys arrives at the family farm with her new husband who happens to be Beth's ex husband. Luke is not a likeable character at all. There are plenty of twists along the way and wow what a story and a terrific ending.
Well well well let’s start off by saying I absolutely loved the plot of this book. Why on earth would you as a daughter want to marry your mothers ex husband. I could think of nothing weirder. So when I read the description I couldn’t wait to get stuck into this book to see what it was all about.
Cerys and Luke are just married, and Cerys is pregnant with their first child. Cerys has given up university to start a family with Luke, however as Luke is out of work they move into Cerys’ mother’s farmhouse. It’s clear from the start that Beth isn’t happy about Cerys and Luke. She is the typical protective mother who would do anything for her daughter. Beth also knows Luke and has seen his true colours, he isn’t the loved up over generous man he is making himself out to be. He broke Beth’s heart and she fears he will do the same to her daughter.
This book was told in alternative chapters from Beth and Cerys point of view, a lot of history was uncovered and although it was clear Beth would do anything for her daughter I thought the way Cerys spoke about her mother was really nasty and very undeserving. She was utterly convinced that her mother was interested in Luke when in reality it couldn’t have been further from the truth. The biggest liar and cheat in the whole book was Luke, yet Cerys was so blinded by love that she couldn’t see this. Where the chapters were quite short I though this helped to increase the pace of the book, I’m a huge fan of short but detailed chapters leaving you wanting to read just one more.
What I loved about the son-in-law was not only the uniqueness of the story line (I’ve never read a thriller like this one) but the amount of twists and turns thrown in along the way was enough to keep the reader hooked and interested from start to finish. I loved the fact that I never knew where this book would take me next.
This was my first book by Jane. E. James and I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for more of her work. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for this review.
I'd like to thank Joffe Books and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read 'The Son-in-Law' written by Jane E James in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Beth’s pregnant daughter Cerys arrives home at their family farm Pen-y-Bryn with her new husband Luke. Beth wants to keep an eye on Luke who she doesn’t trust and invites them to move in with her as he’s her ex-husband she divorced two years ago. It’s obvious that Luke has a reason for marrying Cerys and Beth intends to find out what it is.
‘The Son-in-Law’ is a psychological thriller that’s told in alternate chapters by Beth and Cerys. It’s an entertaining read with a well-thought-out intriguing plot that has its fair share of surprises and unexpected twists. For a story I considered to be a bit slow to get going, it gradually improves until I’ve been unable to stop reading, the confrontational ending is reached where long-buried secrets are revealed and retribution meted out.
I enjoyed reading this as there was lots to keep you reading. Whilst the ending was good, I found it a bit much. I would certainly try this author again.
I could identify with Beth's fierce love for and desire to protect her daughter Cerys. The book kept me guessing with a few plot twists that I didn't anticipate. I did feel like there was an abundance of tragic events in the book.
This was a bit of a wow story. Something that none of us would ever want to experience. It was a very shocking story with a lot of twists and turns. Maybe too many twists? But it was full of suspense and surprise right to the end.
The Son-in-law was a pretty chaotic read - I don't mean that in a negative way. There was just A LOT going on. Fans of soap operas - this is for you.
Loved the writing style, and the alternating chapters for both Beth and Cerys. Character development was excellent, and the book was paced perfectly.
I struggled at times with the constant drama - just when you thought it couldn't get any more hectic, it did. I think there were just a few too many twists for me and it became very unbelievable.
Overall, it was a good read. It was entertaining, well written and I loved the setting of the Mountain and wilderness. 4 stars from me, which would have been 5 with two less plot twists.
Thanks to Netgalley and Joffe Books for the ARC.
Wow what a read! I loved Not my Child so I was very excited to get the chance to read this early. This book is filled will suspenseful moments and twists that were unexpected! A mother is meeting her son in law for the first time and it’s her ex husband.. I mean yes you need to read this book!!!!
Description sounded as if it was my kind of book but I just couldnt get into the story. Sorry, this one isnt for me
I’m really not sure how I feel about this book. Great character development and writing style. I just could not take the plot of the story seriously- your daughter marries your ex husband who she had never met and they end up moving in with you. It just seemed too far out to be believable. I did enjoy the characters and the multiple twists that were thrown in but the premise of the book just seemed foolish. Thank you to NetGalley, Jane E James and Joffe Books for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
I love this fresh twisty plot! A daughter marrying her mom’s ex husband!? I had to read it to see why in the world she would do that. I liked the Beth’s character a lot. She would truly do anything for her daughter. Her love for her child is intense. I hated the daughter though. She was so cruel about her mother most of the time. Wondering if her mother was after her husband even when it was clear her husband was a cheating loser. I would have enjoyed the book more if the daughter was more likable. I felt bad for Beth that her daughter didn’t love her back as she should have. All the shocking revelations at the end were mind blowing. The middle of the book was boring at times, mostly focusing on Luke. Overall this is a twisted family drama/thriller and you won’t see all these twists coming.
