Useful but with some improvable things.
The cute, well-presented, and thoughtful "Kawaii Doogle Café by artist Faith Varvara is a good book to learn some basic ways of drawing desserts, foods, and drinks.
The book opens with a nice presentation from the artist and some tips to keep in mind while creating your art. Then the drawing lessons get divided into eight sections... which is a LOT and in each section you get also a bunch of items to draw yourself!
But here is the thing, this was one of my main issues. I felt like the format of the book was sometimes too rigid in its structure.
For example, we get the tableware section from pages 121 to 133. In there, we learn a basic way to draw glasses but on page 42 (Cakes, Pies & Desserts) we have the Panna Cotta tutorial, which uses that same glass design we learn later on. The first step we have is "Start by drawing de Glass (page 127)", so you have to flip towards the end of the book and then back for a design that it's quite simple on itself (you only have to draw some basic lines to create de dessert inside the other item....).
Wouldn't be better to bend the structure in order of usefulness and coherence?
This topic brings me to my next issue: The art felt a little stale on the tutorials.
Yeah, Varvara's art is cute and full of life, but it didn't translate so well to the step-by-step lessons. The creation itself without the coloring result seems to lack life. And that's something I experienced with my approach to these lessons too. My results would be okay but boring, at least until I get some watercolor brushes and get creative.
My last issue was de coloring pages and their uncreative approach: The final pages have some coloring doddles we learn through the book, but they are not presented in any artistic way or even different way from before.
I would have loved for Varvara to use those pages to show us the full potential of the little lessons we have learned and inspire us to create our own compositions.
Now, I may say too that this book it's still a good reference for those who want to learn to draw various foods in a simplistic and cute style, and that one of its strongest features is that it offers a great variety of lessons to follow.
From what I can see with the 2 pages the app let me view it looks like a nice drawing book. I would probably need to see more to give an appropriate review.
This book was super cute! I am not an artist by any means but I would love to try out some of these doodles.
Do you have an aspiring artist in your family or anywhere nearby? Whatever the age, be it a child or an adult, but someone who wants to draw? Or do you know someone who thinks they don’t know where to start and how to start, yet you suspect they would love to draw? Then this might be the most perfect gift for that person!
What this book is: step-by-step, encouraging, simple, and easy to understand, filled with bite-size lessons on how to draw cute and super cute things.
This is super cute and super easy to follow. Easy instructions. Also makes me want all of the sweet treats and bakery items!
Received a digital ARC of this book via NetGalley.
Thanksgiving weekend. Pulled out the colors and poster paper for the kids. This was the perfect book to keep the activity going. Easy to follow instructions for the line drawings of the various adorable food and drinks. As someone who doesn’t really draw and only doodles, this was even fun for me.
Kawaii Doodle Café : Learn to Draw Adorable Desserts, Snacks, Drinks & More. This is a very cute book primarily aimed at children and adult who enjoy doodling. There are a variety of foods to try and all the instructions are step by step and very clear.. It also adds a few tips for artistic improvement such as sketching and shading your drawing. It is a lovely book to browse through, full of colour and inspiration.
The cutest book with easy step by step tutorials showing you how to draw little snacks. My 11 year old and I like to doodle and this book is perfect. The steps are easy to follow and the drawings come out really good especially for two people who are not the best at drawing. There is such a huge collection of food items to draw and I really liked the idea at the back of the book of how you can combine the food items to make a plate of food etc.
The book was very concise, and it showed step-by-step how to draw each item clearly. I do think one thing the book would benefit from would be to have notes on making a drawing your own. At the end, you've got a nice frame of reference, examples, and a guide on how to draw the items, but I felt a bit like I was just copying. Not a bad thing in the scheme of things. It does what it sets out to do, which is to teach you to draw Kawaii style the items listed in the book. Just a bit about venturing off the path to customize the work more would've been a nice addition to the demonstration, parrot the work, etc. but it's very a straightforward how-to manual that would give someone starting out good exercises to practice the craft. I'd recommend the book
A cute easy guide to drawing Kawaii cute cafe food such as desserts, snacks, drinks & more. The instructions are so simple and clear with easy to follow step by step instructions. Anyone of any skill level or age following this guide will be successfully drawing cute kawaii food in no time!
This book is too cute! A very practical guide to drawing things in the Kawaii style. It was simple and easy to follow, even for those of us who are not super artistically inclined. Loved this book, can't wait for more people to read it and try the drawings out.
This was so much fun to flip through!
As someone who struggles with drawing food, drink and cutlery items (forks *shivers*) I found it incredibly helpful to see each item drawn step by step.
My only qualm would be that I wish the colour/shading parts of the drawing process were also given their own steps - like, how to make sauces look shiny through highlights, and where to shade to bring an item to life. As someone who already draws as a hobby, I'm able to copy the images with relative ease, but I'd imagine it would help to make the book more accessible to those who are new to the scene. Maybe it could be something to add in a future book?
Overall, I'd highly recommend this book if you're looking for a reference manual on how to draw all kinds of cute cafe related items! I myself will definitely be referring back to this book in the future ♡

I stumbled across this in the Read Now section and snatched it up! I'm new to drawing and I've been loving drawing books similar to How To Draw Super Cute Things by Bobbie Goods (which I also found on Netgalley!), and Faith Varvara's art fits that vibe. This book inspired me to get Procreate because that's what she uses to create her art and I've learned so much! Every tutorial in this book is easy to follow and I've learned some new techniques in Procreate because of it. I highly recommend it!
This was so cute and it also has colouring pages. Shame I had an ecopy so couldn't use them. I am setting up my reading journal and will try to draw something cute kawaii. This book however only had food doodles.
This is a cute little book of food based doodle instruction and inspiration. The style is easy to follow and gives artists a good base on which to build their own works. I think this guide is good for a causal drawer and someone who just enjoys having a book for cute art around.
This is SO cute! I love drawing and cute things, especially food. It is perfect! Sometimes drawing full artworks feels to much and this book shows you step by step how to doodle cute food. I only saw the pictures so far so I cannot wait to get home and try out some of these!
This gorgeous book gives young readers the chance to copy and create their own images of food. Sections include pastries, cakes, desserts, cold treats, breakfast and brunch and more. This book does focus just on the food rather than any people, animals or characters. It’s presented clearly in a step by step guide for children to follow. My daughters (aged 9 and 7) have spent a lot of time drawing their own creations inspired by this lovely book.
Thank you Netgalley for this opportunity to take a peek! Can’t wait to grab a physical copy soon! Beautiful Book and easy step by step which my kids love.
I loved this cute kawaii Doodle Art Book so much!
It’s cute, easy and I had really fun „reading“ it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Faith Varvara for giving me the eARC of this book!
