Great quick read. This book was short and sweet and hit the spot for wanting a good thriller. I enjoyed It as a summer read and encouraged others to read it this summer.

I read this in a day!!? and yet I have had an outrageously hard time trying to write this review. Every time I start I erase the entire thing so let's start with some easy bullet points.

1) The characters are all a bit copy and paste stereotypes that sometimes make them a bit painful but they do the job they're supposed to.
2) The storyline was a blast, and I loved the various routes we took to figure out WHAT HAPPENED.
3) I thought the family dynamics directly led us to the plot twist, ending, and all the in-between which made this feel like a family drama psychological thriller and I thoroughly enjoyed that!
4) This was the tiniest bit spooky? Spooky = good.

(1,3) Back to the family dynamics - The expectations the siblings had of each other gave a strong sense of the unreliable narrator with a good dose of character development (CD). You expect so little of everyone that when anything positive happens its a win for the CD. I never found myself enjoying the characters and sometimes even disliked them but the story did have a strong reliance on who they are and our expectations for them.

(2) I loved the story itself. I thought that a mysterious VHS at the beginning was a fun way to get a reverse storyline where you still don't know what happened but you know as much as the main characters do. This made it fun to get all of the information and clues and feel like you could figure it out alongside the main character.

(4) SPOOKY. I thought Rose did a good job at creating an atmosphere, especially near the end, where it helped propel the story and added an eerie vibe to the story. Atmosphere is a bit subjective but it worked for me!

After their mother passes, three siblings all return to their childhood home after years apart. One a successful businessman, one struggling with drug addiction, and one who never left- secrets are hauled to light after their mother leaves a cryptic message as her final words and a secret VHS tape unveils clues to a decades old disappearance. This is a totally passable thriller, although it does kind of play to the beats of most small town mystery thrillers. There are moments I really liked- mostly the character arc of Nicole, the sibling who was struggling through drug addiction- and there were a couple twists that really caught me by surprise. This is a domestic/small town thriller with a fun central mystery and really great pacing. Is it revolutionary? No. But it’s a perfect thriller to get you out of a reading slump. Love the cover too!

My review will post on my instagram @boozehoundbookclub

SO much fun!!!! Jeneva Rose writes some of my favourite popcorn thrillers of all time. This was no exception at all. It was fun and thrilling and really reminded me of one of my favourite black mirror episodes (season 4 if you know you know!!!) I had so much fun with this and cannot wait for the next thrilling adventure.

Special thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book. It was a pretty decent thriller, but I did guess most of the twists before they happened.

Jeneva Rose wins again. This thriller was gripping from start to finish and was full of twists. Highly recommend.

"resentment only poisons the person who consumes it, not the one it's intended for"

this was so much sadder than I thought it'd be! Also I think the blood on the cover made me assume it'd be more of a horror rather than a mystery, but it did make my jaw drop and I definitely did not see the twists coming (even though I do think one of them is a bit overdone in mysteries nowadays). I really wanted to see a bit of writing style change for each of the different point of view chapters, especially since the siblings are so different from each other, but the dynamic between them felt very real especially the random outbursts during such a tumultuous time for all of them. I also read this in 2 sittings because I just had to know what happened, even though I am a biiiiiit disappointed by the big reveal

It’s a nightmare only a Millennial could have. Sitting around watching home movies on VHS with your siblings, only to discover that your parents are hiding a terrible secret. One that involves a dead body. Caught on camera.

Such is the stuff of Jeneva Rose’s latest novel, Home Is Where the Bodies Are. When a trio of siblings come together at their childhood home after the death of their mother, they learn that their parents played a key role in the disappearance, and apparent death, of their neighbor’s child back in the summer of 1999. As the siblings work together to uncover the mystery of what exactly happened that summer evening, and just how involved their parents were, they quickly learn that home is not just where the heart is …

As I am sure it did for many of my fellow Millennials, Home Is Where the Bodies Are drew me in with its nostalgic cover. Who can resist a book that looks like a VHS tape? Certainly not this 90’s kid! Speaking of the ‘90s, the decade of my youth plays a prominent role in this novel of family secrets. I was delighted to discover that the mystery at the center of this suspenseful story took place in 1999, when one of the characters was 16 years old - the same age I was at the end of the century.

Jeneva Rose injects her latest novel with tidbits of nostalgia, sure to make any Millennial long for simpler times. The aforementioned VHS tapes, the rising prominence of the home computer, video games like Zombies Ate My Neighbors, and unforgettable musical acts like Nirvana and Britney Spears - they are all here and ready to transport readers back in time, and I am here for it. Reliving my youth through these pages was one of the highlights of this book.

So was Rose’s uncanny ability to give voice to the many thoughts and feelings I often have running through my head. Time and time again, she poetically revealed truths about life, affirming that yes, others think and worry about these things too - that it’s not just me. On more than one occasion, I felt seen while reading this book. I appreciate that Rose can so poignantly bring to life grief and the human condition and the many ways it can break you.

On the other hand, I found the book’s mystery to be the least interesting part of this story. I didn’t find that it was written in an entirely compelling way, and despite being someone who can rarely predict the end of a suspense novel, I had this one pegged. Color me shocked when I was actually right. I can’t help but feel that Rose might be better suited to writing contemporary relationship fiction, as I found that this is where her work really shone throughout this novel, with the dead body playing second fiddle to the complexity of the story’s characters.

It was too predictable! I enjoyed the three sibling dynamic (2 sisters, 1 youngest brother - just like my own! and the Dunphy family lol) especially liked the Dear Reader author's note and pictures from the actual town in the book! looking forward to reading her other thrillers

What or who is your favorite thriller/muster book or author?Home is Where the Bodies Are starts of with a bang and a great premise. Three estranged siblings reunite after the death of their mother. Their father had disappeared several years earlier. While going through their mother’s belongings t in their childhood home, they discover a vhs tape labeled as a home movie. Upon watching what they believe will be a trip down memory lane, they are instead confronted with a scene of their parents years before and apparently disposing of the body of a childhood friend who had disappeared.

This book had me intrigued from the get go. I read it in a single sitting. This book is both a family drama and a mystery. Told with alternating POVs and timelines, this is my favorite format for a domestic thriller. We see each siblings perspective and the skewed family dynamics that are in play. On the surface they are the all American family, but there is something is darkness lurking and there are lots of layers to unearth. I loved the way this book is constructed. It would give hints of who these people were and that added to the suspense. Set in a small town seething with secrets, the setting was perfection. I did kind of guess the who if not the why but it did not detract from my enjoyment in the least. Don’t we all want to be armchair detectives and solve the mystery? This book was the perfect way to spend a relaxing Sunday. Thank you to @netgalley and @blackstonepublishing

I really enjoyed this book. I liked the different viewpoints because it gave insights to the characters as a whole. Also knowing that the author did it a bit for cathartic purposes makes sense. She has had to deal with someone with an addiction where she couldn't help. I didn't see the ending coming, but it wasn't crazy shocking? But it doesn't have to be. Overall I really enjoyed it and will happily recommend it.

-for those who want to know, there is one vague steamy scene. I think it took up like maybe a paragraph. Nothing crazy.

This book starts with a solid premise – three estranged siblings brought together by their mom's death, each with their own baggage. The setup's pretty classic for a family drama with a mystery twist. Finding those old home videos is a clever way to kick off the plot, and that reveal about their dad on the tape? That's a great hook.
The story's got potential for some deep character exploration, especially with the different paths each sibling's taken. You've got the loyal homebody, the black sheep addict, and the one who bolted – that's ripe for conflict and growth.

But it didn't quite stick the landing.

What a page-turner from Jeneva Rose. Sure to appeal to psychological thriller fans. I loved the intensity and pace. Three siblings come together after the death of their mother--- they are all at different places in life. What will they uncover?

"Beth, Nicole, and Michael must now decide whether to leave the past in the past or uncover the dark secret their mother took to her grave."

4 star rating

This book was incredibly well-written. Everything about it, from getting to see each sibling's POV, to getting a glimpse into the mom's point of view as well. I had my suspicions about what happened to all of those bodies, and I was excited to find out I'd been wrong. There is nothing better than a mystery that keeps you guessing.

From New York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Marriage and You Shouldn’t Have Come Here comes a chilling family thriller about the (sometimes literal) skeletons in the closet.

This was really fun! I love Jeneva Rose and this book continues her legacy as an amazing mystery writer! Highly recommended!

After reading I Shouldn't Have Come Here, I was nearly ready to give up on Rose's books. I am so glad I didn't. Home Is Where The Bodies Are was the fun, campy, over the top thriller I've come to love from Jeneva Rose and I really enjoyed this one - who doesn't love a dysfunctional family?!

This was the perfect book for horror fans, slasher fans, 80s/90s nostalgia fans. Mildly predictable which i never mind if I enjoy myself while reading. Very quick read

I've had a hard time in the past with Jeneva Rose books. Her thrillers left me lukewarm, with twists that weren't so much expected but unnecessary and seemingly...dumb? But I really enjoyed this one, mostly because the MC's voice was unique and sour. I really enjoyed being in the minds of her characters this time around, and the pacing flowed really well. I'll be back!
