Three siblings come together when their mom passed & discovered a VHS tape of their parents the night Emma (neighbor’s daughter) went missing. Along with diving up their mom’s estate, they are investigating what happened that day and the reason why their father left the family. This is a slow burn suspense with the usual sibling rivalry antics. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy.
Wow. Just wow. I was plesently surprised with this one. When I first read The Perfect Marriage, I swore I would never read another one of Jeneva Rose's books because to me, it was too over hyped and I did not like it. Home Is Where The Bodies Are has changed my whole view and I'm glad I gave her another try or I would be sorely missing out. I loved the nostalgia that was thrown into the story from the 90's and the unkowns at the beginning to the very end. This is one book you will want to read! 4.5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the free copy of Home Is Where The Bodies Are by Jeneva Rose in exchange for my honest review.
Fantastic novel that FAR SURPASSES her last book. Jenna Rose really knows how to trick readers into thinking one thing while something else is really going on. I absolutely did not have this novel figured out, and I loved the moment my jaw dropped.
Definitely a book to recommend and read, and while the pacing frustrated me a bit, I loved this. I was just ready for more information long before it was given, but this story is fantastic and I will definitely be recommending this for adults for summer reading!
The story kept my attention and I really liked the alternating viewpoints. I didn't feel super connected to any of the characters and I was able to guess the gist of the ending because of one particular section from Laura. However, I thought it was an intriguing story with twists and turns. Overall it was a good read for anyone looking for a thriller story.
Jeneva, you continue to astound me and pull me into your books. I do not want to put them down. When siblings gather after their mom dies and find a videotape that implicates her parents in the disappearance of a child, the mystery begins. How do you handle? What might they find and do they really want to know? Pick this book up, especially for the 90's references.
"Home is Where the Bodies Are" by Jeneva Rose is a riveting thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. With its clever narrative structure, the book offers three sibling perspectives intertwined with their late mother's journal entries from 1999, gradually unraveling a dark and intriguing family history.
Rose's mastery lies in her ability to craft unique and twisty plots that keep readers guessing until the very end. The alternating viewpoints offer depth to the characters and allow readers to piece together the puzzle of the family's past alongside the present-day events.
One of the most commendable aspects of Rose's writing is her versatility across genres. In "Home is Where the Bodies Are," she seamlessly blends elements of mystery, suspense, and family drama to create a gripping story that defies easy categorization.
While the book is undeniably compelling and difficult to put down, there are moments where the pacing may lag slightly, and certain plot twists may feel predictable to seasoned thriller enthusiasts. However, these minor drawbacks are overshadowed by the overall strength of the narrative and the skillful execution of its multiple perspectives.
In conclusion, "Home is Where the Bodies Are" is a captivating read that showcases Jeneva Rose's talent for crafting complex and engaging stories. With its blend of familial intrigue, suspenseful twists, and compelling characters, it's sure to satisfy fans of the thriller genre. I would highly recommend it and award it four stars.
On her mother's deathbed, Beth discovers that maybe there is more to her family history than she previously knew. Working through the complex relationship she has with her brother, Michael, and her sister, Nicole, they must sort out the details of their mother's estate. As the story goes on, we learn things really aren't as they appear.
Carefully plotted and quick=paced, Home is Where the Bodies Are is a propulsive read sure to keep you awake late into the night reading it.
Alright, did I figure out the plot about 60% in? Yes. Did I still really enjoy this book? Also yes.
While I normally don't give out four stars (or more) to a book where I figure out the "bad guy" so easily, the writing in this thriller was exceptional. Particularly the ending of this book, wow, it was perfect. The right mix of bittersweet and hopeful. It really made you appreciate the story and the author giving these characters a somewhat happy ending.
Even outside of the writing, the characters were really interesting. I thought they did a great job at identifying their personalities and since it's told in 3 pov's you really get to know each one of the siblings. I felt for both Beth and Nicole whose history was so tainted and wanted so much more for them. I also HATED Michael. He was such a fucking prick and every time we had to read his pov I would get angry lol.
I would recommend this one to anyone getting into thrillers or anyone who enjoys a multiple pov book. This has a great ending and a really satisifying plot.
What would you do if you were going through your parents basement and found a old VHS with incriminating evidence? Would you destroy it or try to figure out what happened?
That's what Beth, Nicole and Michael have to decide in Home is Where the Bodies Are by Jeneva Rose. This thriller has heaps of family drama, a little bit of romance, a lot of mystery and an undertone of healing and forgiveness.
What are great read!! Thank you netgalley for the advanced copy❤️ This book is available now so run out and get it!
Solid 4 star rating!
I love how the chapters switch viewpoints from the three children to the mother back in 1999. It really keeps the story moving and interesting. I read this book very quickly because I wanted to know the truth of what happened to Emma Harper and Brian Thomas. This novel shows the lengths parents will go to to protect their children, even if it means losing themselves in the process. Getting stuck in the past is easy when you have so much left unanswered but the children finally get the entire truth after their mother passes away. It just isn't a truth that they would have ever imagined.
I know what you’re thinking…….. One of the the Content Warnings in this is Addiction. Unfortunately for me, I didn’t read the synopsis when I added this to my TBR. I just started reading it. But I found a way to help myself not miss books if I add them without looking. I just skip over that content. And that’s what I did.
Ok so let’s start there. I skipped over the sibling that had that plot line. And as it turns out, I didn’t miss that much of it. The character that was like the main character was Beth. Nicole had some moments when she stood out, but it wasn’t really like anything super important, in my opinion. I just searched certain words in the e-ARC I had and highlighted it. And then I just followed along with the audio and when I saw it come up, I just tuned it out. And it was fine.
Ok so the mystery. I’m seeing everyone say it was predictable, but I didn’t get that. I want to say it was because I was skipping over parts, but who knows. I saw someone else doing it. They made it to the end in a sense, but not exactly lol I also liked the way they were able to get all the info. It is one of my pet peeves when people get the information to the cases and its just not feasible. And yes I know it’s fiction, but it just throws the whole vibe of the book off when it’s not something that can actually happen.
The ending tho? Completely under-whelming. That whole book was like them trying to find out what happened…. And then when it did come together, it was one scene and it was over so fast! Idk I wanted more? Or at least something thrilling to happen in-between chapters. It was really, really boring actually. I was unimpressed. I guess people thought the reveal would be enough of a thrill, but for me it wasn’t. I just didn’t think it was worth it.
I used this book for one of the challenge prompts where I finally read an author that everyone else has already read. I don’t know if her other books are like this, but I will say I have to read another before I make any official judgements. It was good, but the way people were talking about the author, I was expecting a 5 star.
This was a really fun read, and it kept me guessing all the way through. The audio for this book was also phenomenal. You can always count on Jeneva Rose for a great twist. Highly recommend this book! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rose’s latest is a bit like a trainwreck…you don’t want any part of it, but you just can’t look away and it all seems to take place in slow motion. Told in multiple voices, you are never quite sure who’s telling the truth. The end will take you by surprise, even as you feel it was coming the entire time.
HOLY SHIT BATMAN this was a crazy and wild ride I won’t soon forget! I absolutely loved and was hooked from start to finish.
I was very let down by this book. I thought it was very predictable, cliche, and there was no thriller aspect to it at all. It could’ve been better written and I thought the author didn’t do any research.
I’ve read previous books by Jeneva Rose, and I did not enjoy them as much as I did this one. Maybe it was the 90s nostalgia. Maybe it was the family dysfunction. Maybe it was the mystery of the videotape. Whatever it was in this book, I was here for it. These 3 estranged siblings coming together after their mother’s death only to find a video confession of sorts to solve the mystery of a missing girl was perfection. Yes, there is a twist BUT it works! In her previous books, some twists were so outlandish I found them frustrating. Not this one.
Thank you NetGalley and publisher.
Wow! Jeneva Rose has done it again! I did not see that plot twist coming! 3 siblings, bodies! Wow! I can’t say enough about how good this book it! Probably my favorite!
Thank you to the publisher for my copy - all opinions are my own.
I am a big fan of Jeneva's work and was really looking forward to this one. While this one has more of a slow burn feel, I was fully invested in the story and the characters right from the start. This is easy reading and the movement between character POV's is always a favorite for me.
While I did admittedly guess the twist fairly early on, it in no way took away from the overall story, as I really wanted to see how it would all play out once the reveal came.
Atmospheric, intense and twisty, this is the perfect popcorn thriller for summer TBR's.
Home Is Where the Bodies Are is a thrilling, twisty horror novel about family, nostalgia, and secrecy. Estranged siblings BETH, MICHAEL, and NICOLE return to their childhood home in the wake of their mother LAURA’s death. While watching old family videos on VHS from their youth in the 1990s, the video cuts to footage of their parents frantically discussing how to dispose of a young girl’s dead body. This disturbing echo from a crime long past sets the siblings on a journey to unearth the truth behind their parents’ secrecy and their father’s sudden disappearance. The story is told from four distinct perspectives (BETH, LAURA, NICOLE, and MICHAEL) and each of the characters is distinct and layered. Thematically, it concerns the process of grieving (not just of loved ones, but of the lives we give up to become who we are) and the lengths that we will go to protect the ones we love. There is a potent strain of resonant nostalgia in the scenes from 1999 – it calls into question the nature of such reflection and how we overlook certain details to fit a constructed narrative, for better or worse. Overall, the strengths of this novel are in its character work, its emotional complexity, and its fun and twisty narrative. Highly recommend!
I will never not read a book written by Jeneva Rose. I always go in looking for a good time and I have yet to be disappointed.
In this book three siblings come together after their death of their mother. While cleaning out their mom's house, they discover a home video that changes everything.
The premise of this one was fun and I enjoyed getting to know the three siblings--Beth, Nicole and Michael--in the alternate timelines of the past and present. And one of my favorite things about Jeneva's books are the little bits of wisdom that get sprinkled throughout her stories.
"I spent my whole life being nervous up until I realized that life happens in between the beats of our own heart, and if it thumps too fast, there's no space for us to live."
This is another perfect thriller to throw in your beach bag and the special editions out there are chef's kiss.
