"Frankie's Fishy Feelings" is a heartwarming children's book that skillfully addresses childhood anxiety through the charming character of Frankie, a young shark. With colorful illustrations and relatable scenarios, the story gently guides young readers through Frankie's journey of self-discovery and coping strategies. From overcoming first-day jitters to navigating social interactions, Frankie learns valuable techniques like breathing exercises with the support of her parents and therapist. Written with empathy and sensitivity, this book is a valuable tool for parents and caregivers to initiate conversations about mental health and emotions. It emphasizes self-care and resilience in a way that resonates with children aged 4 to 8.
This story highlights the feelings of anxiety with a shark named Frankie. He is about to attend school for the first time when he begins feeling some intense anxiety. His mother takes him in to see a therapist who teaches him coping skills like naming his fingers.
While the message of the story is amazing and something we should be discussing with kids, the writing was very choppy and needed some editing.
I did enjoy the art and the premise but I think it needs some more editing before being put out into the world.
This simple picture book addresses the important topic of children’s anxiety. The author has worked to take control of her own anxiety issues and she shows young readers how to help themselves deal with their own nervousness. I hope adults will read this book aloud to kids to help them feel calmer in stressful situations.
This is a delightful little book that serves to demystify anxiety and the uncomfortable feelings that children may be struggling with as a result of experiencing it. The one thing I would suggest (and I know this isn't the final version), is to immediately include an apostrophe in the title!
Frankie is a tiger shark who is just beginning to attend Kindersharken (the book is worth the price for that piece of cleverness alone, in my opinion!) Because of this, she is now experiencing all kinds of difficult emotions which she can't entirely understand, not least the physical sensations.
When her mother takes her to therapy, Frankie is offered a range of useful tools to manage these feelings. The more she practices, the easier it is. This allows her to enjoy her Kindersharken experience much more!
This book will be really useful to children who are struggling with anxiety, especially if the techniques it offers are put into practice. It is based on the personal experience of the young author, Quincy Kadin, and reflects her own journey. As a bonus, the illustrations are absolutely adorable - and I say this as someone who doesn't like sharks!
