I live Savanah’s writing style. Her books are so easy to read. Enemies to lovers is my favorite trope so I was hooked from the start. I love her added humor into the story as well!
I had to laugh when Summer first shoots Ben down. He doesn’t expect it at all. I really like Ben and how he is so good to and for Summer. This was a fun book to read and I really enjoyed the romance.
As the owner of a golden retriever, Ben definitely hit the attributes of my sweet pup. The author did a good job of making me feel like I was immersed in the scenery. The story was sweet and uplifting.
I am a sponge, soaking up all of Savannah Scott's books. I love them, period. And A Fish Out of Water was everything I wanted it to be. The whole story from beginning to end was excellent. Read her books, all of them!
I grab anything by Savannah Scott. Love her characters and stories. This was a cute, swoons read. You knew what was coming but you were anxious for it to happen. Great weekend read.
I adore Savannah Scott, so I knew A Fish Our of Water would be a win for me. I was not disappointed at all!!! I have not read the first book in the series yet, but that is ok. Backstory is provided for all the characters, and I never felt lost or like I was missing something (don’t worry; I plan to remedy this omission ASAP). This is a dual POV between Summer and Ben. Summer is absolutely NOT interested in Ben, which is unfortunate because he is hooked from their first introduction. Possibly one of my favorite meet-cutes. I certainly laughed out loud and continued to laugh out loud with their banter. There are plenty of serious moments peppered throughout as the story builds and the dynamics of their relationship begins to change. What I love is the setting, the supporting characters, the adorable characters, witty dialogue/banter, and genuine story development. I cannot wait to read the next in the series!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are solely my own, freely given.
I didn't think Ms. Scott could top the first book in this series, but Fish Out of Water was a delight. Summer really made Ben work for her affections, but when she finally let down her walls it was a thing of beauty. And of course the way Ben pursued Summer with patience and persistence was super sweet. I would definitely recommend this book to readers of all ages who enjoy a romance with both substances and chemistry while keeping the door closed.
I always enjoy Savannah’s books and this was no exception. I liked that is a true enemies to lovers romance, like Summer really really does not like Ben for a while and it was hilarious to watch them interact. The different characters, jobs, things they did on this crazy island made for east reading. They have great chemistry, I’ll definitely give Savannah that, and once the slow burn heats up 😘🫠.
The book read a little long for me. Romances for me are best between 300 and 350 pages so this one being over 400 felt long, but I still really enjoyed the characters and the storyline and the plot.
I’m always looking forward to Savannah‘s next books!
This story. Oh goodness. I just love this story. Ben and Summer’s enemies-to-friends-to-more story is now one of my very favorites. It is reverse grumpy-sunshine, full of banter, fantastic chemistry, and so much fun.

But seriously, I love this story—the tearing down of walls, the opposites attract, and the golden retriever character of book-Ben really does highlight some of my favorite things about my own husband. And yes, I am the grump in our relationship. He is the laugh to my too serious. 😉🫶🏻
This was such an amazing book!! This was my first time reading a book from this author and it did not disappoint! I loved this book so much and cannot wait to pick up the other books to read ASAP. I related to the characters in so many ways.
I loved Ben and Summer and getting to watch them grow closer. I am always looking for sweet romance books to recommend and add to my library and this one is definitely high on the list. I highly recommend this book to anyone! Be sure to check it out!
First thought: Cuteness overload! I love Summer and Ben and you will want to ship them from the moment Ben lands on Marbella. This is the sweetest closed door enemies to lovers romance that’s chalked full of cute banter, lol moments and genuine characters that make you fall in love. Binge Worthy!
Summer came to Marbella to escape her family and pursue her dream of becoming an actress. She is working at the resort part time as she prepares for the major role as a mermaid in a play that will hopefully lead to landing a spot in Hollywood. She doesn’t have time for guys especially charmers as they are the worst kind!
Ben is a charmer, everyone loves him as he is genuine and a nice guy. He came to Marbella with his friends to start a new life, he’s working at the resort as a sports water instructor. As soon as he stepped off the ferry with his friends his eyes landed on the most beautiful girl he has ever seen and he was instantly smitten. But things went wrong, words spewed from his mouth and instead of charming her she was repulsed. Telling her Summer was his favorite season probably didn’t help. Now the one person he wants to get to know is the one person who acts like he doesn’t exist.
Marbella is a small island and Ben and Summer are bound to cross paths. Ben can’t stand that Summer has iced him out, he tries everything to prove to her that he’s worth having at least a friendship with. Can Ben turn things around or will he forever be dreaming of this beautiful mermaid and what could of been.
Tropes you’ll find:
* Enemies to Lovers
* Reverse Grumpy / Sunshine
* He Falls First
* Forced Proximity
* Found Family
* Small Town
* Closed Door
It was a cute and fun read. But it was also oh so very cheesy.
I love enemies to lovers, workplace romance and reverse grumpy and sunshine. Unfortunately, I considered DNFing 'cause it took took me a long while to warm up to the characters, especially Summer. As a fellow grump, I appreciated the "representation", but she was often just insufferable. Thankfully, the story got so much better in the second half.
Ben came off as very cocky at first, but he's definitely a golden retriever at heart!
Read if you like:
- enemies to lovers
- workplace romance
- closed-door romance
- dual pov
- island setting
- reverse grumpy x sunshine
It's attraction at first sight for Ben, but distrust or even enmity at first sight for Savannah. But Ben's used to getting along well with everyone and doesn't know what to make of this woman who shoots him down without a second thought. He decides to do whatever it takes to win her over. And it looks like he's slowly succeeding. But both her past and her future are standing in his way - can he really overcome all that's standing between them to build something lasting?
Overall, I enjoyed this, but it did feel a bit slow at times in the middle. In theory, I appreciated that Summer took a while to warm up to him and that they then had some good time getting to know each other before things got too messy, but the result was a story that didn't always hold my interest so well. And okay, so maybe Ben's personality had a tendency to also rub me up the wrong way. Nevertheless, it was a good story and I enjoyed seeing Summer and Ben work through all that's keeping them apart and reach their happily ever after.
Note that I received a complimentary copy of the book from NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review and this is my considered opinion of the book.
2 stars. I DNF around 25%. This book just wasn’t for me. The writing was fine I just couldn’t get into it.
A Fish Out of Water by Savannah Scott is second in her Love Trippin’ series. Summer Monroe is working on Marbella Island and trying to break into acting by playing a mermaid in the island production of In So Deep. Her past is mysterious and she is not into charmers. Ben who is a charmer just arrived on the island. He smiles and makes everyone happy around him and women love to fall for him. Except for Summer.
This delightful sweet enemies to lovers Rom-Com was such a fun read! Savannah Scott has become an auto-buy author for me. I feel like I am on a wonderful adventure I do not want to end when I read one of her stories.
I loved Ben and Summer with their banter, the way Summer resisted Ben, Ben’s devotion to Summer and their slow burn romance. I started off thinking Ben was a little bit goofy, but after a few chapters and getting to know him I was completely taken. I enjoyed visiting Marbella Island again and visiting with old and new friends on this charming island.
I enjoyed the well-developed characters, the slow burn romance and the charming setting. I am anxiously awaiting the next story in this series! I highly recommend A Fish Out of Water.
I was given a complimentary copy and not required to write a positive review.
I loved this book!!! I didn't think anything would be better than the first but itnwas precious. I think what I found fascinating was that it was written in between the ending of the first book & the epilogue, so almost a duel story but not quite. I laughed several times during it & cried at the end. I hope we get Madeline's story too.
Wonderful Wonderful book!
This was a cute story. It is very light and easy-going with plenty of funny quips and heartfelt moments. I've been excited for Ben's story since I finished 'Are We There Yet', which is the first book in this series. The writing is well thought out, but the pace is a little slow for my preference.
Favorite quote: “Tell me you’re not allergic. I got these because they remind me of you, a little wild and a lot of beautiful.”
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
✨closed door romance✨
This was such a fun read!
Ben and Summer (or should I say Bummer🤭😂) are just the cutest! Ben is the most golden retriever-like person ever. He’s sweet, friendly to everyone, caring and can be flirty at times. While our girl Summer, is slightly reserved, has great acting skills, has no time for distractions and is aiming for her dream.
Their enemies to friends to lovers transition was flawless. Even though Summer didn’t like Ben at first, their chemistry was instantly noticeable. The bantering during their enemies phase was hilarious. Then when it turned to them being lovers, it was full of swoon. 💕
If you’re looking for a clean, full of swoon romance, totally recommend this book😉
- Workplace romance
- He falls first
- Enemies to lovers
- Reverse grumpy/sunshine
This book is the perfect blend of romance and comedy. I just loved it!
The story is about employees of a high end resort in the island town of Marbella. Summer is just working there until she gets her big acting break. Ben is the new guy. Summer and Ben get off of the wrong foot and Ben spends the majority of his time trying to make up for a bad first impression, which makes Summer think he is a player to be avoided.
I love how Ben didn't give up on Summer,but in a respectful way. He is a total golden retriever and I was all in!
This story really gave me Dirty Dancing vibes - the employee side of it. I very much enjoyed the book.
A Fish Out of Water is a closed-door enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy. Although it references characters from her Bordeaux series and takes place on Marbella Island, a location used in A Not So Fictional Fall, it can easily be read as a stand-alone. The story is told in alternating POV from Summer and Ben.
Summer Monroe is an aspiring actress working part-time at a fancy resort on Marbella Island, California. She has run away from her old life and is making a fresh start, including using a new name. She grew up in a wealthy Southern family but hides it from everyone. She enjoys sharing a room with Marissa, a co-worker, in the employee dorms and learning to live on a budget. Summer’s agent urges her to audition for a mermaid role in the island production of In So Deep, hoping that she will get noticed by a film studio guest.
Ben and his lifelong best friend, Cameron, got jobs at the resort after graduating from college in San Diego. They are natives of Bordeaux, a small town in Ohio. Cameron’s younger sister, Madeline, and her best friend, Riley, are visiting them for the summer. Cameron and Riley have just started dating but they are keeping it a secret from Madeline. Ben is a golden-boy charmer who is adored by everyone he meets. This will help him as he works as a water sports instructor.
When Summer is assigned to pick up some new employees and give them a tour of the resort’s facilities, she gets off to a bad start with one of the guys. She labels Ben as a “player” and does her best to avoid him. She is the first person to be immune to his charms, so he’s fascinated by her. He’s drawn to her like a magnet, wanting to change her opinion of him. Ben is really a good guy, and Summer won’t believe anyone when they tell her that.
When Ben gets the male lead role, a pirate, opposite Summer’s mermaid, in the local play, In So Deep, she finally gets to see the real Ben. Slowly Summer’s hidden past is revealed and there is some drama with her father. The sub-plot with Cameron and Riley’s secret romance continues as well.
I absolutely loved A Not So Fictional Fall, the author’s book that was released in October as part of the Sweater Weather series. I did not enjoy A Fish Out of Water as much because the characters are fresh out of college and are at that level of maturity. It feels like the TV series Friends set at a beach resort. Summer’s refusal to see the goodness in Ben makes her seem like an unlikeable heroine; she is rude to him on multiple occasions. The writing is good; I think the story will appeal more to New Adult readers.
