This series always takes twists and turns I was never expecting. This one was even darker than the last one, which ripped my heart out. It is well written as always and I appreciate that Rory is a fully complex human who doesn't just bounce back but is instead dealing with the physical and emotional toll her trauma takes on her life.
I found this book more difficult to read, mostly because of the darker plot line, but also Hay's writing style reflects Rory's inner voice (PTSD, disassociation, etc) which I found more difficult to follow at times - but I have never been a huge fan of stream of consciousness writing style so that is more of a personal preference. It was well done, just I have a harder time reading it.
Please be advised of on page Sexual Assault and rape (not graphic) and the trauma that justifiably goes with that.
Book was ok. Took a while to really get into it. Maybe it was one of those books where I wasn’t in the right mood to read this book. Idk. Overall was decent read.
A really brave and intense book. Well written with fast action and an incredible pace. But becareful if you are of a delicate nature!
This is the Author's third book in the series - I would recommend reading the first two books to set the characters and world building in place .
I found this more of an horror story than an urban fantasy book - reading the content warnings might give the reader a heads up on the 'trauma' elements .......... but , that being said , this was a book that tackles mental and physical abuse with deft hand , a page turner that makes me want to read more about our female lead , Rory .
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own
I want to start by saying that I loved the first two books in this series and one of the reasons is the realistic characters and situations. Reading this series doesn’t feel like I’m reading about stereotypical characters, Elise Hay makes each of them feel like real people.
And if the second book was darker than the first one, it had nothing on this third instalment in the series. Honestly, based on the book summary I was not expecting the plot we get in this book and if I had known I’m not sure I would have picked it up.
My recommendation is to read the content warnings VERY CAREFULLY before you pick this up, as it deals with a lot of trauma and some of the content warnings essentially make up the main plot of this book.
I read this entire book with a feeling of dread in my stomach and the experience was honestly more like reading a horror story that the action packed fantasy I expected. Because frankly, sometimes the most commonplace horrors are the scariest ones.
Despite the book being extremely well written, that means I can’t give it more than 3 stars because I genuinely didn’t enjoy it as much as the other instalments. That doesn’t mean the book is bad in any way, but it wasn’t the book for me. Even if you love this series like me, check the CW and take care of yourself.
Book three in a superb urban fantasy series. I think it’s best if you have read the previous two books before you start this one. As this book is, they are so good. I enjoyed both them and this book so much. This book is full on from the start, with action that leads directly on from events in books one and two. Elisse Hay has created a wonderful and pop believably real female lead. In this third outing for Rory, Elisse has written a brave story line which portrays mental, physical and sexual abuse, and abuse of the power. I know there is more to come for Rory and her friends, and I will be first in line to read the next book. Thank you to City Owl Press and NetGalley for the ARC.
