I thought this was so dang cute. I really enjoyed reading this book. It made me laugh out loud, and just really root for Simone.
I had mixed feelings about it. I really wanted to like it but the huge amount of sex references and the beginning made me question the whole book.
However, I'm glad I gave it a chance because it was so different from everything I'm used to reading (the homeless parts).
I wish I had seen a bigger redemption but still I would recommend the book.
A well written and put together read. I was hooked early on and could not put the book down. Recommended.
First book I’ve read by Sal Thomas I thought the synopsis sounded fun.
The book was funny and light hearted
Original idea I enjoyed this
A good holiday read

I did enjoy this book, different subject and sonething a little bit different. I look forward to reading more by this Author.
I DNF after 25%. Was not my cup of tea and found it to be sarcastic more than funny. So cringe in so many parts. The cover was cute though.
Thanks to NetGalley for the arc.
This book had me laughing out loud on my sun lounger many a time! A real funny, light hearted easy read - would reccomend
A funny book which had me in stitches. A great light read which I couldn't stop reading. Cleverly written I do hope she writes more like this one. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
DNF @5% - I could pretty much tell right away this book was not for me. The opening scene is just gross and the humor is trying way too hard to be funny but not really succeeding. The main character is not likeable and even though she may improve, I’m just not interested.
The opening chapters to this book did make me laugh & the crudeness fitted so well,
It was good to have a subject that was difficult for most of us to understand, but it brought home the awful situation of being homeless.
The added romance to the story was good but not all together needed as this book could stand alone.
I'm looking forward to the next book by Sal Thomas.
Community Service by Sal Thomas was an interesting read. It may not have been my preferred cup of tea, but it was written in a very easy to read manner. I did not feel connected to the characters, and the plot was a bit choppy.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced reader copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
Absolutely brilliant, loved it. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me an advance copy, I will definitely be recommending.
This was a ok read for me. Not one I could fully get invested with.
Maybe it’s just me.
I would love to try reading it again in the future.
Thank you NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
i enjoyed The Accidental Housemate and was hoping to enjoy this however I really don’t know how I feel about it… the beginning was so crude that I wasn’t sure I wanted to continue! I’m glad I did as the story does pick up when Simone goes to work at the Shelter however she was really hard to empathise with, I know that we find out slowly the reasons that she behaves the way she does but I still don’t feel satisfied!
I really liked the homeless characters and this was my favourite part of the story,
Too much unecessary sex and references, however I appreciated the story and tenderness regarding Tashas story and how Simone slowly unravels to become a (slightly) better person!
This was meant to be funny but comes off as overly sarcastic and has so many situations where you’re embarrassed for Simone. The opening scene was difficult to get through and I tried but ultimately this was a DNF for me.
With its dry wit and warmth, Sal Thomas has another gem of a book with 'Community Service'. PR exec Simone Stephens finds herself having to undertake community service at a homeless shelter after mistakenly assault a cop she thought was cosplaying.
Simone is a lot of fun and I really appreciated the growth she undertakes to regain her less cynical self. This is a woman who has become jaded, having an affair with a married man, working in a toxic and misogynistic company. But underneath you can see why she is the way she is - working to give herself financial security that she lacked growing up in a working class family with parental issues.
As always, Sal Thomas delivers funny quips and banter between Simone and Jasper, the social worker who also comes to see Simone for the soft-hearted person she is underneath her carapace. Another winner from Sal Thomas, more please!
Thanks to One More Chapter/Harper Collins UK and NetGalley for the ARC.
Brilliant. Simone is sentenced to community service in a Homeless centre .Totally different from her life in the city, will she settle into caring for the homeless? Laugh out loud moments, ideal holiday reading .Loved it .
In Community Service by Saul Thomas we watch Simone as she gets community service in through it not only find love but becomes a better person at the same time. I’m going to be honest and say I did not like Simone at the beginning of the book and had it not been so lol funny I would’ve stopped reading it very early on but everything from the homeless guy to the rivalry with her coworker and on anon was so funny I kept reading it just for that reason it wandered up being very heartwarming and by the end I really liked the person Simone was becoming I would love to say I love her as a character but that would not be true. But if you love funny stories with great character development and a pretty good romance and you will probably like this book. I want to thank the publisher for my free art copy via NetGalley please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
I suppose this is aimed at the current young crowd with wanting to drink their cares away and get into some raunchy situations. While I can see the humor that was meant to uproariously land in the reader's face, it just did not hit home for me. Simone is in a business where it is dog eat dog, and she finds herself in situations no young woman should be in. There are some redeeming factors as she undergoes growth and finds herself helping others, as well as finding love in the most unusual of places.
Overall, Community Service is a sarcastic view of life and love. I've enjoyed other entries by Sal Thomas, but this one was not for me.
