A read I finished in one sitting!
Bad Apple unfolds a complex web of betrayal, justice, and redemption that kept me dialed in. The author explores the darkest corners of the human psyche and the unpredictable nature of the human heart.
The story centers around Becky, who stumbles upon a burner phone that reveals her husband, Sergeant John's, dark secret: an accusation of rape. This discovery sets off a chain of events that leads to their divorce and Becky's determined quest for truth and redemption.
The plot thickens when John's current girlfriend, Nina, becomes an unexpected ally to Becky. Together, they devise a daring plan to frame John with the help of Becky’s ex cop coworkers (Hannah and Charlie) only to have their evidence mysteriously vanish.
Can Nina be trusted? Can the ex coworkers be trusted? What will John do to protect his front?

Bad Apple has an interesting narrative that keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. Becky’s husband John a detective, is described by his work colleagues as a trusted officer and a family man. But appearances can be deceptive, as Becky knows only too well. He’s a monster who has committed the most hideous crimes against woman. Becky reported him to the authorities, but the lack of evidence and his ‘powerful connections’ shielded him from facing charges. Determined for justice, Becky hunts him down. But John wants her silenced at any cost. Becky knows only one of them can survive, and she’ll do anything to make sure it’s her. Sadly, the theme is one that we often see or hear about on the news corrupt and predatory police officers using their power to prey on the vulnerable.

Alice Hunter effectively portrays Becky as the ‘mad, psycho, mental’ ex-wife, leaving you unsure if John is behind certain events or if it’s Becky’s vivid imagination playing tricks on her. I must admit even I wondered how reliable she was as a narrator! Nevertheless, she is a captivating protagonist, and the supporting characters add depth and complexity to the story. Paranoia and distrust become intertwined, so you are never entirely sure who to trust. The plot moves between the now and then where the reader gradually learns more about the horrific crimes John committed. The chapters are clearly marked, so there’s no confusion. I flew through this book as Alice Hunter’s intricate plot weaves together suspense and mystery. Highly recommended

A brilliant, twisty police procedural story. I really like Becky our main protagonist who is smart, strong and hell bent on bringing justice. Highly recommended xx

Becky was married to the love of her life. Fellow policeman, John.
She came across a burner phone with messages that stated that he is a rapist. She reports him and she gets fired from the force, and he gets promoted.
Becky has to get hard evidence, but it seems there is not just one Bad Apple in the force.

I really did enjoy this book. I love a good police procedural, and Becky is a strong character with high morals.
I wasn't impressed with her ex colleagues. I really did not trust them at all.
There were twists that I didn't expect at all, but I felt the ending was a bit of a let down for me. Just my opinion. I wanted more for Becky and John's victims.
I do recommend. 4/5 stars from me.

Bad Apple is the latest thriller from Alice Hunter, best known for her "Serial Killer" series.

Becky Lawson's life fell apart when she discovered that her policeman husband was a sexual predator. To make matters worse Becky,a police officer herself, was and forced to leave her job after reporting her findings was met with a coverup and she was made a pariah. As if that wasn't bad enough she discovers that not only has John escaped scot free but is living with a partner and her young daughter, presumably unaware of the monster sharing her life.
Becky is determined to not give up on making John pay for his crimes and to let his new partner his true nature, something that puts her in danger , up against an invisible group of corrupt policemen and discovering that he had even more secrets.

This is a thrilling read,Becky doesn't know who she can trust amongst her old colleagues and finds herself up against a resourceful and dangerous foe. Sadly the theme is a topical one, corrupt and predatory police officers seemingly committing crime with impunity.

Another great read from this author. Becky discovers she is married to a monster who is a police officer and the crimes he has committed are truly horrendous. Who should she trust? At times its difficult to tell.
If i had read this a few years ago i might have felt the storyline was over the top, possibly. Sadly in this day and age it didn't feel like that at all.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher.
I flew through this huge five star read.

It’s your word against his, a respected member of the community and trusted officer, but appearances aren’t what they seem. He’s a monster, and you’ll do what you have to do to get justice, at all costs.

I loved how hard Becky fought for herself and to save other women, proving men can’t just get away with whatever they please no matter how well connected they are. 👏

One aspect that made this book harder to read though was the constant use of British language. With most books set in the UK, the language isn’t as noticeable. This is probably only my problem, but it got to be distracting. Luckily, the twists and suspense of this novel kept my mind intrigued. This is my first book from this author, but I’d be willing to read another as her storytelling abilities are strong.

TW: Rape, abuse
