Such a fantastic way to end the series! I have invested many enjoyable hours in the characters of The Cornish Girls. Thanks to the author, I have traveled back in time to World War 2 England. I got glimpses into what life was like for my relatives. They are so right. If you weren't there you can only understand a little of what went on. Stories like this one, give me little glimpses.
As the story comes to a close with the end of the war; emotions are running high. The reader watches as spies are uncovered, and surprises are brought to light. I can't imagine always having to watch my back and be suspicious of others. The reader watches as codes are broken and reminded what a challenge it all was for women.
I wanted to celebrate as soldiers came home, not always in one piece but bringing smiles to the characters and me. The author did such an amazing job of bringing their stories to life. I closed the book on the series wondering what happened to all of them as life went on. Did they keep calm and carry on?
I'm sorry that this is the last time we'll be in Bude, Cornwall but also glad to see that the women in this series have come through WWII and, for the most part, have happy endings (albeit in some cases different than they expected. ). It helps to have read one or two of the preceding novels so that you can fully appreciate everyone, how they fit together, and how their lives have evolved but it will also be enjoyable as a standalone for fans of the genre. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A genial well told tale.
Taking place in Cornwall (a place I know & love) I was hoping for more description to really feel like I was there, but it felt lacking in that area. It was a bit confusing figuring out who all the characters were - although if I’d read others in the series I’m sure it would’ve been easier. Everything turned out well for the characters at the same time as the war ended, which doesn’t feel believable but at the same time was nice to have a happy ending. A clean, sweet book which flowed well.
I received a copy of this book from @netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for a nearly review copy.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all the books in this series.
The story was well written.
Alice arrives back in Cornwall after she was injured and lost the man she was in love with during the last assignment whist undercover.
She is asked to join a team of code breakers and as she has decided not to do spy training anymore, she agrees..
Imogen’s next task is to be around the new vicar, as it’s thought that he could be a spy.
Pearl, who used to be in a group that used to dance and entertain the Americans is not that happy as she’s been let down by the person she loved.
I recommend this book.
An atmospheric, comfort read of a book that will make you want to book flights to somewhere warm immediately. This book has stayed in my mind for quite some time after reading it, very much the mark of an outstanding book.
Can’t wait to read the next instalment!
What a great read. I love these books, often with lots of interwoven family members and this one did not disappoint. Set towards the end of WW2 in Bude, Cornwall, the story tells us of Alice, Imogen and Pearl, all who have had their hearts broken recently and how the end of the war helped them to learn and love again. The depth of the characters were a testimony to the author - I do love a strong independent woman and all three ladies were no exception! Thanks to Net Galley for the advanced copy.
I received a complementary copy for review purposes; opinions expressed are honest and mine alone.
Altho’ I hadn’t read the previous volumes, author, Betty Walker, provided enough backstory to make VICTORY FOR THE CORNISH GIRLS a standalone read. There’s quite a sizable cast to get straight but each one has a unique arc to make it a bit easier.
As this is the final book in a six book series, Walker is tying up storylines and depicting events for the end of the European theatre of WW2. She does mention key events in America and Japan, keeping the historical context more global. It was enjoyable to read a story that wasn’t all focused on romance, ignoring the nitty gritty, life and death issues facing the characters.
A good balance between descriptive prose and dialogue keeps this story moving at a medium pace. You won’t find any issues with language, sexual content or graphic violence. This would be an excellent choice for readers interested in WW2 fiction, sagas (series), historical fiction, British historical fiction and all with a light romance, wholesome tableau📚
Another wonderful read from Betty Walker. I loved the characters especially Alice, Imogen and Pearl. This was a heart warming story of love. friendship and romance at a very difficult time during the war. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading these stories and following the lives of the characters. Beautifully written and a great story line which was difficult to out down.
I have loved following this series & this last one did not disappoint.
So well written & easy to read with some wonderful well developed characters.
If you enjoy a wartime saga then I am sure you will enjoy this series.
Alice unfortunately came to harm on her last secret mission as well as losing the man she loved while they were undercover.
She returns to Cornwall as she is injured & gives up her spy training.
When she is ashes to be part of a team of code breakers she jumps at the chance to be involved once again.
Imogen is involved in shadowing the new vicar as he is believed to be betraying his country.
Pearl an American is an entertainer to the troops but is feeling very down at being jilted by her sweetheart.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this whole series.
The war is nearly over but the girls from Cornwall still have work to do and lives to lead. This is the last book in this series and I would recommend reading all six books in order if you are able so you can follow the girls and their lives in Cornwall. 5 stars.
Thanks to Netgalley, author and publisher for this ARC
Friendship, loyalty, and compassion always follows when the Cornish girls are around. I love this series as it follows lives of young women in Cornwall during World War II.
The struggles, the triumphs, and reality of life and war is well written and takes you to Cornwall in the 1940s. Each entry feels like a visit with friends and I cannot wait for the next entry after finishing the one I’ve just read.
This is book number 6 in The Cornish Girls series.
It takes ne a few chapters to remember who everyone is and what they did in the previous book.
There's heartache for Alice during her spy training and she decides to undertake a different kind of work helping her country.
Imogen is asked to follow certain people and report if she has evidence that they are spies. What happens if she's attracted to the person she should be watching?
The battalions who have been based in Cornwall are preparing to leave for D Day across in France. Will this bring the end of the war ? And how many soldiers will loose their lives and never return?
American,Pearl who came to Cornwall, with a dance troop is let down in a horrible way but decides to stay and find another job or help in the war effort.
What a good read. It was great to be back with these women once again as they head towards the end of the war. All have hopes for a better future,a future that will bring back the men they love who have been away for so long.
Amazing to catch up with the Cornish girls as ever the books never fail to grip you and draw you into the story, absolutely live this saga and Can't get enough of the storylines and characters
This book series has been an absolute balm to my soul and the fact we’ve had six in this amazing series is a true gift! Getting to follow our main cast of characters and new faces throughout the duration of the war in all of these books culminating up to this one, makes every new instalment an exciting addition.
I’ve always loved Alice and her progression throughout the books and getting to join her again and now training as code breaker almost feels like coming full circle. She’s rapidly become one of my favs and seeing all our familiar faces get married, having babies and finding love was great. - a true heart warmer.
They’re still in the thick of war, with uncertainty, turmoil and challenges ahead but life in Porthcurno goes on. There’s tasks to uncover spies ahead, D-Day approaching and then the rumblings that after all this time, war could be over…
Not exaggerating when I say The Cornish Girls have been one of my favourite wartime series of all time and both starting and ending the war with them over the years has been a true joy to read.
Excellent end to an excellent series.
I have loved each and every one of these books, and am sorry to see the end of this series.
Really looking forward to the next series that Betty wires
What joy to read the 6th book in the Cornish Girls series and it didn’t disappoint. As war is heading towards the final part Alice returns to Cornwall from London and Penny, Florence, Immi and Pearl plus the residents of the guest house have their own adventures in Bude. Best to read the novels in order. Thanks to Betty and her publisher. Thanks also to NetGalley
A nice romantic story of three girls trying to find love at the end of WWII. I love the happy ending!
I loved this series so much! The book was so amazing! It was very well written and the plot line flowed very well. I would highly recommend this book.
Book six in the series. The characters are all now like old friends with whom you are catching up with.
I was slightly disappointed that the book quickly covered the remainder of the war. From D-Day to the end of the war seems such a long and important piece of history to be covered in just half a book.
There were lots of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. Pieces of happiness mixed with sad and emotional times.
As the war has ended I do wonder if there will be more or if this is the end of the series?
Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers and author for allowing me to read and review this Arc copy.
Although this is book six in the series, you don’t have to have read the others for this one to make sense, although it will enhance your enjoyment if you do.
Book six is set in Cornwall 1944. Alice, forced away from her spy training in London, finds a new purpose in a local branch of codebreakers, while Imogen feels helpless to help her fiancé, and American Pearl is jilted by her young soldier love.
In times of war, the Cornish girls learn to rely on each other through times of heartbreak, trial, and victory.
I have enjoyed this entire series and can’t wait for the next book. I love the themes of friendship and belonging that this series uses, and the English side of me loves revisiting places I adore.
