A neat introduction to art history for kids. Very encouraging to create and allow yourself to make mistakes. Kids get an introduction to all manner of artists and art styles, from our ancient ancestors painting on cave walls to self-portraiture like Artemisia Gentileschi to the wax creations of Emily Kame Kngwarreye. Each section also teaches how to recreate (with modern tools) the art styles explored. This would be a marvellous addition to any elementary/primary school art classroom, or as the perfect gift for a budding artist.
***Sidenote- I applaud the fact that Moses Williams’ enslaver was called just that- not owner, not master, enslaver.
***Many thanks to Netgalley & Nosy Crow for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This book is the perfect balance of art history and ideas for art projects. Overall it would be a great introduction to different genres of art.
This Book Will Make You an Artist is a brilliant combination of art history and art projects that will teach kids about different techniques in many different kids of art from painting to performance art to sculpture. At the same time they will be learning about the artists and movements that have built the art world into what it is today. The projects vary in complexity but all use readily available art supplies. I am definitely adding this book to my library's collection before summer. I'm hoping we can use some of the art projects in our summer program.
I had not heard of this book until I saw it as a Junior Library Guild selection. I looked up the author and I am loving her art! I would love to check out more books by this publisher for my library.
For this book, first of all, I love the artists selected Yayoi Kusama, Judith Scott, Katsushika Hokusai (the wave!!) and so many that they ask about and might know - but I love these others they may not know. I also love how there are ideas on each page with unique ideas of ways students can create similar art.
This book is fabulous! The pages are bright and written to the reader in easy to understand language. The projects are so interesting and doable. There is enough historical background to the projects that the reader can't help but learn something, and yet also short enough to keep them engaged. You will learn about famous painters in an approachable way and then try your hand at a project inspired by them. Paint in points like Georges Seurat, make an abstract mobile like Hilma Af Klint, or splash paint like Janet Sobel just to name a few. So many fun projects to choose from! I highly recommend this book!
I will write a review on amazon once the book is released!
I love this book so much! I learned about many artists and I love the guidance to make your own art. The illustrations are so fun. Any art class or elementary school library could benefit from this. I am a stay-at-home mom, and plan to add this to my shelf as well. Very well done.
Thank you NetGalley and Nosy Crow for this advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
