First let me start off by saying that I listened to the audiobook while I read the ebook. I love listening along as I read. The story starts off with Val who learns that her sister has passed away from an apparent suicide at a fancy hotel called The Franklin. She is distraught over the news and begins to do research on her own as she doesn’t believe her sister would commit suicide. She meets a man named Terry at the library where she is doing research and even though she is very rude to him when they meet, they eventually form a unique bond which prompts Terry, who is a former detective, to help Val in her research for the truth. Terry has his own insights about the hotel where this happened as he know that it has a history of death. There is also another story that is told which takes place in 1921. This story is about Bridgette and her story is filled with so much sadness that it just broke my heart as her story unfolded. I really loved the way the book was written with going from past to present and how the stories connected. The narrators did such a great job throughout the story. They captured the feelings of the characters so well that I really felt like I was there with them! I strongly recommend this book as it is very unique from other books I’ve read. Thank you to Netgalley and CamCat Publishing, Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA), Members' Audiobooks for providing me the audiobook in exchange for an honest review. The book/audiobook are already available as it was published in December 2022.
A sister’s love and belief in her sister leads her on an unrelenting mission to find out what really happened to her sister, not accepting the theory that she committed suicide. I thought that the history and the parallel story from the past in the same hotel was written very well and added a great twist to the story. Couldn't put this book down!
This book started off well but I found it got quite confusing due to the different characters and timelines. I had a bit difficulty remembering who was who. I am not really interested in supernatural elements so did not enjoy this aspect.
2.5✨
It’s a novel which follows two parallel timelines first the present in which Val who lost her sister, it is said that she killed herself but Val is determined that her sister can’t do anything like that and she eventually teams up with Terry so catch the murder. On the other hand, there is a story set up in 1971, where a young girl marries someone she shouldn’t marry to.
Starting was very good and I was invested in the story but I felt the lack of depth in the characters and their relationships. Plus there was so back story in the beginning which made it very difficult for me to connect to the characters. I felt like if the hidden things were revealed throughout the story if would have been better than all the information reveal by the end. Another thing which I didn’t like that how the two timelines were connected, it was so sudden and as it happened at the very ending of the novel, it all honestly felt fake, made up and forced. And the book just ended like that (iykyk) it was the epilogue that has the whole plot, it’s like you read the epilogue and you know what the actual plot it. And even though the epilogue contains the reason why those things happened it was not sure, all the things were uncertain even in the end.
A big thank you for the chance to review this book. This was my first book by KL Murphy and it won’t be my last. Narration by Rachel Fulginiti, Kate Rudd, Curt Bonnem was spot on and made the characters come to life in this duel timeline mystery/suspense book.
I was torn between liking the past or present timeline best but this book kept me guessing how the two were connected until the very end. The author does a great job making you feel connected to the main characters in each part of the book. The end of the book left me with a few questions which makes me wonder- could this be the start of a series? I hope so!

Narrators: Rachel Fulginiti, Kate Rudd, Curt Bonnem
Stars: 4
The synopsis seemed vague to me; another dual timeline story. While that is true, the stories are interesting. I liked the characters and found the modern day family relatable and realistic. I would have been happy with a story centered on this period. The author cheapened her work with a passing F word. Seriously? It came out of no where and was not necessary.
The early timeline is creepy and saddened me. It was necessary given the author's plot.
The ending: I was disappointed. I didn't really see it coming.
This is not a bad book and I will look for more by the author.
I did like the narrators. I thought the Bonnem was especially good.
Really enjoyed this thiller. You definitely feel like you're on a wild goose chase, the good kind. I thought I had it figured out multiple times but of course I did not. I definitely recommend if you like thrillers. The author made this one pretty complex which I appreciate.
I’m going to be honest. This book was well written and definitely compelling at times. The problem was I felt like it was trying to do too much. I struggled at times to keep up with the timeline while keeping track of 2 completely different storylines and sets of characters. I feel like it could have been cool to split the book into a duoligy where you get the back story in the second book and can make connections that way. It also felt like the pacing was a bit slow at times. But I still enjoyed the book and the narrator was great
This high quality audio concentrates on two different stories in two different times told by 3 different narrators to give 3 pov.
The first is rhe present day and focus eson finding out the truth about how val's sister died. She us aided by Terry an rx cop.The other is much older and is quite brutal and focuses on Bridget and her abusive life.. All narrators put emotion into their performance dealing with complex emotions. The story us full of red herrings and has rhe hint of supernatural. The final reveal explains how the stories come together and is a satisfactory ending. This was a tad slow paced for me and I became more interested in tge past because it was beutal. The level of description could be triggering for anyone deal with complex issuses of suicide and abuse. That said it was true to life and the cgaracters wrre well narrated. The side characters fitted into the story well.
I did enjoy yhis mystery. A solid 4.5 star lisyen alrhough short could feel long in places this is due to character development . Thank you netgallery and publisher and author and narrators.
This is the first book I've read by K.L. Murphy. The book is split into two timelines - 1921 and present day.
The modern day timeline is of Val whose sister has just died. The death was ruled a suicide, but Val believes she was murdered. Some chapters in this timeline were told through the perspective of Terry, an ex-police officer with an unknown history.
The 1921 timeline is of a young woman on and around her wedding day. Some parts of this timeline were very difficult to read. The connection between the timelines was not disclosed until the very end.
The audio narration was very well done. I believe this story is equally good for those that prefer to physically read a story and for those that prefer to listen.
I thought this was a very good story and both of the timelines were interesting. I think I actually preferred the present day timeline a bit, just because of the subject matter of the earlier timeline. I will be interested in reading more of Murphy's work.
A chilling narrative across time zones which will leave you thoroughly aghast. The historical story adds some threatening feelings that really disturb one but when taken in to context with the present day tale, it all adds up in to a fantastic read!
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* This was a pretty good read, ill admit i found it hard to put down and even (though not entirely) somewhat shocked at the end! Would recommend and read more from this author. 4.5 stars
Unfortunately it failed to keep my interest from the beginning and i was unable to finish this one s i couldn't listen past the initial few chapters ;(
This is a gripping story about the mystery of one room in the old Franklin Hotel.
The researcher and reporter Val Ritter is trying to solve the so-called suicide of her sister. At the same time, we follow the story of Bridget who is about to marry a charming man in the 1920s.
The suspense is kept up through the parallel stories till the end.
This was a well done audiobook and an interesting novel. In modern times, Valerie had recently lost her sister to suicide: Valerie can’t believe that and resolves to find out what really happened. In a dual timeline, many years ago, a young girl has recently married an older man. The characters are colorful and the setting at an old hotel provided suspense. It was a satisfying read.
When Val's sister has been discovered in Balitmore hotel room her world is torn apart. She knows there is more to it that what first appears.
She discovers things she's never known about her sister when she teams up with a retired detective. Maybe she didn't really know her sister at all? But as she keeps digging the hotel seems to reveal its own dark and possibly supernatural secrets.
Will Val ever find the answers she is looking for?
This was a great supernatural mystery that had me waiting to keep on listening to find out how it was going to end.
I was extremely disappointed with the ending, in my opinion in really made the ghost part of the story so insignificant when it could have been so much more.
Not a bad story but I would not listen or read it again. As far as recommends go... I can think of better supernatural thrillers I'd rather share.
This was such an amazing read for me. Two seemingly unrelated stories (one present day another taking place in the 1920’s). What does one do when you are a reporter on the crime beat and your sister dies by an apparent suicide? You investigate. Was truly invested in the story would highly recommend.
What would you do if you found out your always positive sister has committed suicide? Val, a journalist finds out her sister has been found dead in a Baltimore hotel room The Franklin and it has been deemed as a suicide- Val who loves to research finds this hard to accept. After coming across Terry, after breaking down at the library, she finds out he’s an ex police detective.
Terry can’t shake the feeling that something isn’t right when he hears the hotel name- in the past, there have been lots of unexplained deaths. They team up to find out what really happened the night her sister checked into The Franklin when she should have been away on business.
The book flits from the present timeline to the past, can they find out what really happened to Val’s sister and also all of the unexplained deaths.
The book was a really good read, I enjoyed how it flit from one timeline to the next. I had an idea of what may have happened but was completely wrong. I loved how the two timelines came together nicely towards the end.
Her Sister’s Death was a nice suspense to read, not too tricky to figure out but a good book anyway. I am giving it 3 stars for a few reasons. Mainly because instead of being a real mystery, the character just kept cutting everyone off when they were about to tell the truth about what happened. I sort of figured that out early on in the book. I would recommend it to someone who likes mild thrillers with a little mystery building around the story as well.
3.5 Stars of suspense and mystery.
The story is set in the Franklin Hotel and is told in alternate timelines.
In present day story, Val’s sister is found dead at the Franklin hotel in an apparent suicide. Val, a reporter, doesn’t want to believe her sister committed suicide so she starts her own investigation with the help of Terry, a man she meets at the library. Terry used to be a police officer and has his own personal reasons for helping Val.
In 1921, Bridget marries Lawrence and they honeymoon at the Franklin hotel. On their wedding night Bridget discovers that Lawrence is not a nice man. Lawrence is a monster and Bridget realizes she needs to get away from him at all cost.
I enjoyed listening to this audiobook, and would recommend it. The past is harder to listen to, but more detailed. We, the reader, you get a glimpse of what it was like for women in the 20s. I did like the fact that there was an epilogue, but felt like there were some things left out.
I’d like to thank NetGalley for a Complementary copy in exchange for an honest review.
