This book is great for its emphasis on using a sewing machine, which helps young sewists build essential skills and confidence. The techniques covered are diverse, from hand sewing to machine stitching, providing a comprehensive introduction to sewing.
The book also encourages sustainability by teaching kids to make their own clothes and accessories instead of buying them. This not only fosters creativity but also instills a sense of pride in making something with their own hands.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to review a temporary digital ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
I loved this book and the projects depicted. I plan to use it for my handcraft class. Creative with a touch of whimsy. Clear instructions for beginning sewers.
An ok collection of sewing projects. My big problem is that the clothing instructions are a one size deal. Not very helpful for most people learning to sew.
Kids' Sewing Workshop is a tutorial and technique guide by Karine Thiboult-Demessence. Released 5th March 2024 by Fox Chapel on their Landauer imprint, it's 96 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats.
This is an accessible and fun book aimed at tweens/beginning sewists filled with cool tutorial projects. There are 26 projects in the book, including personal clothing items, crafts pieces like a change purse, and soft furnishings.
The projects are attractive and fun, but some will either need an advanced beginner who has some experience with the techniques or access to a teacher/guide/facilitator.
The photography throughout is clear and high quality.
Four stars. It would be a good choice for public or school library acquisition, home use, makers/activity groups, scouting, etc.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I enjoyed reading the Kids' Sewing Workshop book by Karine Thiboult-
Demessence. You will be inspired! Happy sewing!
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and the publisher. This is my honest and personal review.
I highly recommend this book. It has some great patterns for different creative pieces, including patters for clothes that the child can sew themselves. I actually learned a few things myself as a novice sewer so I think the book can easily be picked up by an adult newbie who wants to know more about sewing.
Clearn instructions, nice flow to the book and good picture quality.
I guess the only thing I could point out is that there could have been more diversity in terms of what subjects were depicted int he pictures. Young children of different ethnicities and (dis)abilities would for example have been lovely to see.
Okay, so this is amazing. It’s perfect for younger people who want to get into sewing. My daughter loved it, she’s 9 and was able to follow the pattern well and was incredibly happy with her creation.
I am always looking to expand my shelves in my nonfiction section in my classroom. Kids Sewing Workshop is a breath of fresh air for this part of my class library. As an avid sewer I enjoyed looking through the projects and was pleased to see that the projects had clear instructions and a variety of levels of difficulty. The projects were cute and if a child is interested, I feel this will be a great resource. I plan to buy for my daughter and teach her the sewing skills I know.
When my grandchildren were in primary school , we sat down with my sewing machine and made some fun things - library bags with embroidered name (cheated via machine program stitching), skirts for the girls and a few t-shirts for the boys We whiled away hours in the holidays and they still talk about "remember the time we made?"
I loved the time and felt we understood each other. With these skills not in use these days as much I think this book will take the kids away from their electronics and give a pride in "I made this" . There are 26 projects to make in this book, some are clothing, other are accessories and fun things. Some are very easy and others require some skills, which they can pick up from doing the easier projects first.
Great book for kids or even adults who are not that skilled in sewing. Thanks you NetGalley and the publishers for the DR.
Good book for the preteen that expresses interest in sewing. Some basic knowledge of sewing and use of sewing machine would be most useful for this book. Good graphics and instructions.
Thanks to Netgallery, the publisher for this advanced copy and the opportunity to review this book. The expressed opinion in this review is of my own.
Love this. Me and my daughter are sewing together. My gran taught me how to sew and I love having a hobby to do with my daughter. Easy instructions and helpful tips. Will be using this a lot.

I sincerely thank NetGalley, Fox Chapel Publishing, and Landauer Publishing for providing me with the e-book in exchange for an honest review.
This will be an excellent reference for kids and adults. Organized and planned well. I wish this author well.
This was a good book. The projects were nice, but they did cater to girls learning to sew. Some projects you could change it up and make it gender neutral but it lacked inclusivity.
A great reference and idea book for intermediate sewers or beginners who have a skilled mentor at hand.
I am not a skilled sewer and as a bumbling beginner with a child, many of the projects listed in here feel very out of my league but are great ideas for us to come back to as we develop more skill (or when Grandma can oversee our work lol).
As someone who working years in this fields, nothing make me happier to seeing a little crafters in making. I found this amazing world from my grandma who teached me hand sewing and crocheting. And I wish we can found books like this at the time.
Kid's Sewing Workshop is an guiden book for girls who are interested in sewing and make their own clothes, accessories, and room decorations. Some projects are cute and simple enough for kids but still need older companies during sewing machine times and cut the fabrics.
This book sound as the workshop perfectly okay for beginner but from experience using sewing machine could be intimidating. So this book more suitable for kids who already knew her ways with the sewing machines. The book is straight fowards and wont offer basic knowledge about the machine and how you doing treatment. I adore the projects but I love to see more project with hand sewing for extra personal touch.
Thank you to Netgalley and Landauer Publisher from Fox Chapel Publishing for providing a copy of this ebook. I have voluntarily read and reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I like that it has some actual nice looking garments. It doesn't seem dumbed down just because it is for kids. That said it might not be super beginner friendly. The diagrams look pretty clear.
The projects are cute and the book layout is nice. I think the levels are a bit misleading. This would be best for older girls who have experience sewing on their own. That said, it would likely do well in my library's service area with a large mennonite community.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This instructional book is geared towards girls who are interested in sewing their own clothes, accessories, and room decor, but even though the book initially sounds like it will be beginner-appropriate, this is only for girls who are already very experienced seamstresses, or who have skilled adults at hand to help them.
The introductory matter is very brief, and it doesn't get into the kind of basic instruction I would expect from a book like this. Even books geared towards adults usually have several pages or a couple early chapters about sewing fundamentals, explaining basic techniques. This one assumes prior knowledge and experience.
The projects are fairly complicated. They involve machine sewing, hand-sewing, and general crafts, and even though there are difficulty ratings, the projects aren't organized by the ratings. The projects also have very limited instructions and diagrams, and needed far more step-by-step details and images to help children follow along. The projects can seem deceptively simple to someone who's just glancing through the instructions, since there are only a handful of steps for each one, but there are lots of hidden steps that aren't spelled out or explained.
Although this book has a unisex title, the projects are almost all stereotypically feminine, with girls' clothing and lots of pink, frilly, cutesy stuff. I think this should have a gender-specific title, and I would have appreciated greater variation in colors and styles for girls with different tastes. Of course, kids can make these projects with whatever colors and prints they want, but the styles are still fairly limiting, and the project images in the book will only appeal to girls who share the very feminine aesthetic. Some greater variety would have been nice.
Because this book assumes a lot of prior knowledge and doesn't adequately break down the steps involved in each project, I would only recommend this to girls who are already very experienced with sewing, or who have family members who will be helping them every step of the way. This book can be great for young girls who like feminine designs and want to level up their existing sewing skills, but if someone is just getting started with sewing or prefers a different aesthetic, this is not the book for them.
This is not a beginning sewing/seamstress book; it's more of a level two book. It is great for young sewers who are already comfortable (or mostly comfortable) with a sewing machine and are ready to make something for themselves.
