This instructional book is geared towards girls who are interested in sewing their own clothes, accessories, and room decor, but even though the book initially sounds like it will be beginner-appropriate, this is only for girls who are already very experienced seamstresses, or who have skilled adults at hand to help them.
The introductory matter is very brief, and it doesn't get into the kind of basic instruction I would expect from a book like this. Even books geared towards adults usually have several pages or a couple early chapters about sewing fundamentals, explaining basic techniques. This one assumes prior knowledge and experience.
The projects are fairly complicated. They involve machine sewing, hand-sewing, and general crafts, and even though there are difficulty ratings, the projects aren't organized by the ratings. The projects also have very limited instructions and diagrams, and needed far more step-by-step details and images to help children follow along. The projects can seem deceptively simple to someone who's just glancing through the instructions, since there are only a handful of steps for each one, but there are lots of hidden steps that aren't spelled out or explained.
Although this book has a unisex title, the projects are almost all stereotypically feminine, with girls' clothing and lots of pink, frilly, cutesy stuff. I think this should have a gender-specific title, and I would have appreciated greater variation in colors and styles for girls with different tastes. Of course, kids can make these projects with whatever colors and prints they want, but the styles are still fairly limiting, and the project images in the book will only appeal to girls who share the very feminine aesthetic. Some greater variety would have been nice.
Because this book assumes a lot of prior knowledge and doesn't adequately break down the steps involved in each project, I would only recommend this to girls who are already very experienced with sewing, or who have family members who will be helping them every step of the way. This book can be great for young girls who like feminine designs and want to level up their existing sewing skills, but if someone is just getting started with sewing or prefers a different aesthetic, this is not the book for them.

This is not a beginning sewing/seamstress book; it's more of a level two book. It is great for young sewers who are already comfortable (or mostly comfortable) with a sewing machine and are ready to make something for themselves.

My daughter is very interested in sewing and was very excited to see all the projects in this book. We can't wait to start it.

Sewing Workshop is an instructional sewing book aimed at girls aged 10-12yo. The projects range from simple skirts and headbands through accessories, room decor and more. While some of the decor projects could be considered unisex, it is a book aimed at girls.
The projects are arranged into the broad categories of "clothing" and "decor" and contain projects for machine sewing, hand sewing and general crafts (eg the bracelets). They are NOT ordered by difficulty- rather they appear to be randomly arranged within the categories.
The projects themselves rely on measurements and drafting rather than ready-made patterns, and the instructions are rather brief. There are some accompanying diagrams, however given the target audience, more diagrams, or photos of each step are needed.
Overall, I wouldn't give this book to a raw beginner who has never picked up a needle - rather it feels more appropriate for advanced beginners or makers with a little experience under their belts.
As mentioned above , the majority of the projects in this book are not unisex - given the apparent target audience I understand why the projects were chosen, but I would have liked to see more gender neutral options - pants, basic tops, etc, or neutral colour schemes in the product images.

Sewing Workshop for Young Makers : 26 Projects for Young Makers. This is a great ideas book, full of pictures, projects and inspiration. However due to the lack of detailed instructions for each project, an experienced adult would be required for most children to complete them. Still an excellent book, and one that many crafty children would love to receive as a gift.

The projects in this book seem so easy, the clothes, the accessories, the stuffed toys. Totally beginner-friendly ! I love that we don't need to print the patterns and they're easily traceable/ drawn by following the dimensions. However, for the clothes, the pattern of only one size is given and it's not indicated what size/age the cloth is for.
Thanks to Netgalley and Fox Chapel Publishing for access to this arc in exchange for my honest review.

This book has beautiful pictures and interesting projects. The patterns are sized for the 10-12 age group. My problem with the book is that there are nowhere near enough diagrams included in how to make the projects. I feel that with more diagrams, the book would achieve its aims of helping children learn to sew. I feel that an adult would be needed to give a hand and explain the instructions.

Sewing Workshop for Young Makers is exactly as it says. Full of a variety of fun and useful projects that practice all the basics of sewing, this book would make a wonderful course for a middle school girl. I was impressed with the simplicity of the projects and variety of ideas. As a seamstress, I was impressed with the simple, but clear directions and illustrative simple sketches, though I think most girls will need the benefit of mentor as they learn still.
I wish it had a few masculine or unisex clothing projects to introduce boys to this useful skill as well as providing girls with projects that open their eyes to sewing for someone else.

This book was so adorable, I loved everything about it, the illustrations were so well done, they suited the book perfectly, the story was amazing as well. I’m sure the kids are going to be just as enthralled with this amazing book as I was. I will definitely recommend! Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this early copy
