Crocheting Reversible Amigurumi Projects is a fun (and beautiful) collection of reversible soft toys by Jessi Van In. Released 19th March 2024 by Fox Chapel, it's 111 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats.
These projects are fun, colorful and appealing. The book contains 6 complete tutorials with several variations of each, as well as a thorough introductory tutorial and all the basic techniques/theory necessary to understand how to do them. Each tutorial contains a complete supplies list, difficulty rating, size (with recommended yarns), and step by step tutorial directions. The book is very well photographed throughout and the "action" shots are rendered without hands or tools obscuring the details (very handy). The photography is clear and in color.
The author makes use of furry "eyelash" yarn on most of the tutorials (see cover photo). The results are very cute and cuddly.
The book also contains a QR code link to the author's website which contains a lot of additional content and video links as well as some free project tutorials.
Four and a half stars. Well made and very fun. The tutorials are not too advanced for crafters who are familiar with the basics of crochet. The text is clearly written in understandable step-by-step language.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I have not personally done any amigurumi with textured yarn, and given its fussy nature I'm reluctant to try, but these patterns are absolutely adorable, particularly the bee in the hive. I love the versatility of the reversible patterns, they are easy to read and follow, the pictures are clear, etc. This is everything you could want in a fuzzy amigurumi book!
These projects are so cool. I was drawn in by the penguin on the cover, which I need and am starting this evening, but I love the bee that reverses into its hive. I may need one of those too. I don't often use much fur yarn, but I may have to start doing more with it, seeing how these critters turn out using it. The instructions seem easy to follow, and cover every step, making these complicated looking reversible creatures look surprisingly easy to make. They still may be beyond beginner crocheters, but confident advanced beginners might be able to handle the fur yarn and the techniques in these projects, especially if they start with the projects labeled as easier ones. The projects seem easily adaptable to other similar-textured yarns too, so they ought to be great ways to use up the odd skeins of novelty yarn that always creep into the stash every so often.
Cute patterns! I had some trouble following the pattern I tried (the panda) but I'm not that experienced in crocheting. Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the free eARC in exchange for my honest opinions.
Wow, what a cute book. Love the patterns show how to use the fuzzy yarn, So many tips and trick this is a total hit for me.
The patterns seemed needlessly complicated. Maybe it was the formatting of the book, but I didn't think it was written in a way that beginners or advanced beginners could follow along.
The step by step instructions are easy to follow, and they provide great advice on some of the more technical aspects to the craft. I enjoyed their section on creating child safe eyes. That being said, the reversible projects aren't for me, and seem a bit niche. The only project that made sense to me was the bee into the hive, otherwise the other projects didn't seem to have any relation to their reversed counterpart. Recommended only for libraries where yarn crafts are particularly popular, and patrons are looking for a new and exciting challenge.
this book is such a fun idea and so very unique! its surprisingly different from the other patterns out there and i love the crochet eye tutorial in it too
this book had some really interesting patterns that were fun to make and I hope sell well at future markets.
I've never seen reversible amigurumi until I picked up this book. I was very excited to make these projects. There is alot of information here for beginners.
The layout of the book and directions make it very hard to follow and a bit confusing. The index page is not lined up correctly and does not display page numbers. I appreciate and do like the Tools and Supplies section and how much information it provides for the project in the book, but again, page numbers are not displayed when referencing specific pages. The tutorial pages for different types of stitches are a great addition for beginners and a great refresher for more experienced crocheters. There are random pages where the photos are just a white space, and then the next page has a the normal photos. I am unsure of the reasoning behind this, is makes everything very confusing and difficult to follow along with. The editing on the actual photos of projects and objects could be a bit better as well, I can see where they are pixelated and photoshop was done to erase the background, it's not awful but could use some cleaning up for printing.
Over all the book is very hard to follow and I likely will not recommend it or use it myself. The information in the book is great but may need organized and edited in a way that is easier for the buyer and reader to follow while doing the crochet projects.
I’ve been scared of attempting to crochet with fur yarn. I’ve heard a bunch of horror stories of how hard it is to work with. After reading this book, everything is less intimidating. There is a comprehensive section of the types of fur yarn and how to choose the right one for each project. The beginning section had very detailed instructions on all the skills needed to complete the projects in the book. I really enjoyed how detailed this book was. My favorite project in the book was Smuggles the Fox and Flossy the Cat hand puppets. I also liked that each project had a detailed assembly section with pictures. I would have a lot of confidence in making any project from this book! I recommend this book to crocheters who are interested in working with fur yarn to make adorable amigurumi projects.
I am now part of the crochet world! This book has helped me figure out where I was going wrong with my amigurumi! I really like how detailed the directions are and that they are super easy for me to follow. I have added the hand-holding otters to my list to make along with the Limbo the Lemur who I am very excited to gift to my mom!

I am new to the crochet world, and was excited to find a book about Amigurumi Projects! This was well written, and easy to follow along - also love all the photos.
Cute! absolutely want to make some of these! I would recommend the book for an advanced beginner crocheter, one who can work a tube of crochet, and has probably already made a hat, in general. If you haven't made a hat, but you want to jump in with making the ami, go for it. They are really easy and Jessie Van In gives great instructions and pictures in the book. Good luck!
My opinions are my own, and I received an advanced copy from the publisher via NetGalley. Thanks!
Fantastic book for children and parents. Great illustrations and very informative to start crochet.
