I thought this was a good book that had vibes of sex and the city and the golden girls all wrapped into one. It tells the story of four friends over the course of decades, starting in their 20’s. Showcases how idealistic and easy going we can be in our twenties while slowly morphing into women who just can’t be asked to give a sh*t as we get older. The trials and tribulations that happen organically as we age mixed in with the nonsense that those we love can throw into the mix made this a fun yet sentimental book.
I loved the back and forth timelines and found the friendships delightful in the way they spoke to each other and stood up for each other. One can only hope to have friends like these for decades. Anthony did a fantastic job of creating a unit of women with clever and heartfelt banter and a book with a satisfying conclusion.
Tired Ladies Take a Stand by Gretchen Anthony
.
During one unforgettable year in their twenties, a group of friends made a pact to embrace whatever life threw at them. Now twenty years later these friends are struggling with their various responsibilities and situations in life.

What I liked:
-I loved how these women were in my age range, it really made this story come alive for me and I felt a lot of what these women were feeling.
-I love books with strong friend groups. It was so hopeful to see how these friends really had each others backs, despite some hurt feelings and strong emotions.

4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The audiobook was really good!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC! This was a quick, fun read about a group of women who are done with saying yes and have decided to start saying no. I had a fun time reading this one.
I liked the idea of the women standing up for themselves, but I don't think that was a huge focus during the majority of the novel like I thought it would be. It wasn't until the end, really, that any of the made any actions to take a stand.
I received an advanced copy. All thoughts are my own.
I have always enjoyed reading Gretchen Anthony's novels, and Tired Ladies Take a Stand is no exception. The story is an ode to women who have just had enough. Women who are tired of saying yes to everything and bending their will to others in a hope of keeping the peace and the ball in the air. Enough is enough and four life-long friends reach that decision together in this charming and very relatable novel.
Thank you to NetGalley and Park Row Publishing for the opportunity to read this novel.
This one wasn’t really for me. Maybe I’m not the target audience as I’m a new 30 year old mom, but it just didn’t quite resonate with me. I loved the friendships throughout the story, but it just wasn’t something that I couldn’t put down.
3.5/5 - A unique twist on a feminist coming of age tale, this story is told from the pov of four friends in their 50s, dealing with the cards they’ve been dealt and choices they made while reminiscing about their past and what brought them together. Fern, Emma, Carolina and Andi met in their twenties and had a whirlwind “year of yes” - fast forward and their heck yes approach has them exhausted, over scheduled, and out of touch with their own happiness and each other.
This reminded me a bit of First Wives Club meets Now and Then. I LOVED that the main characters were in their fifties. The story takes places in the present day, which I liked, but the reader gets insight into the “twenty something years” via snippets from a book of personal essays published by Fern. The writing was smart and the characters were dimensional, relatable, interesting and messy. Fern is a hoot. I loved everything about this in theory but it read a little slow and I wish there was a bit more to the twists. Either way, I found it highly enjoyable!
Thank you so much to @netgalley, HarperCollins and Gretchen Anthony for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review. Out now!
When the year of yes turns into a lifetime, and you're ready for a hell no! Told from the perspective of four middle aged women who have been friends since their 20s, this was a light beach read. The plot was thin and the ending anti-climactic but, I enjoyed the fact that there is a story about women that doesn't shy away from menopause and gives a few small glimpses into the hormonal wreckage women experience.
A different take on the “year of yes”. It was written in a humorous way, and the characters were likable enough. I felt no connection to them, but maybe when I am older and hopefully have money I can pick this book up again and really enjoy it. I do like that an older stage of women’s life was written about, it’s refreshing when not a lot of books focus on women in this way.
Tired Ladies Take a Stand is the story of four women who have been friends for twenty years and reunite to do what they want I was looking forward to this story, but did not relate to these women and the book became a DNF for me.
I think many people will enjoy it the perfect beach read. The writing is well done and humorous and many middle age women will relate to the characters.
I received a complimentary copy of Tired Ladies Take a Stand through NetGalley, but all opinions are my own.
A moving, highly relatable novel about four middle aged friends exhausted with their lives and the various bullshit related to demanding jobs, parenting and marital troubles. I loved this book and highly recommend it to fans of the movie, The first wives club. Strong female characters taking back their power are always a hit for me and I imagine this would make a great book club pick. Good on audio too narrated by Gail Shalan. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!
Kinda a fun twist on the whole “year of yes” thing — which they did in their twenties! These 50 year olds are entering their year of no! I love that they’ve been friends since their 20s and I think anyone with a long term friend group would love how easily their friendship works despite not being perfect. The true representation of when friends become family — you’re bound to fight!
Sprinkled in are excerpts from the book that one of the friends published! A book within a book, so fun.
Overall, these Tired Ladies really did Take a Stand! This novel is so realistic which is nice for a beachy read. Not a ton of wild conflict, mostly mundane things that we’ve heard of. Horrible, cheating husband, kiddo is starting to do bad in school, work a holic mom, annoying neighbors, the whole thing. Very cozy! We do get a lot of backstory of how they were in their twenties which helped me feel connected with the characters and how they’ve changed.
The ending had me audibly laughing😆😆 The perfect way to wrap it all up!
Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for an ARC of this book that got released yesterday! A perfect palette cleanser.
This was a great story of friendship! I found it to be funny and a joy to read.
Thank you for the ARC for my honest review
Happy Publication Day to Gretchen Anthony for Tired Ladies Take a Stand! I first discovered Gretchen’s writing when my IRL book club read one of her earlier novels, Evergreen Tidings from the Baumgartners a few years ago. So, when Gretchen reached out to me about reading her latest, I couldn’t say YES fast enough!
When I turned 40, so many wise and wonderful women in my life told me that I’d really start to feel comfortable in my own skin at this age, and stop caring so much about what people thought of me. (They were correct.) The women in this novel are in their early 50s, and have fully embraced this mentality! They’re tired of people-pleasing, picking up the slack, and being expected to do it all! They’re ready to live life for themselves without feeling selfish about it. Sounds liberating, right?
In true Gretchen Anthony form, this novel is funny as heck. I laughed, giggled, and may have even snorted a few times. It made me think of the women in my life who I’m proud to call friends, and also strive to be more like these characters!

This is all about friendship-a long term friendship between four women that's tested when Fern's book about the year in their 20s when they all said yes to things is optioned for the movies. It moves back and forth between chapters of that book and the present, when Emma, Fern, Carolina, and Andi are gathering for events related to the marriage of Emma's daughter Portia. These women are incredibly relatable. They're overwhelmed in different ways by life and work and family and a neighbor who doesn't pick up after his dog. They're also coping as best they can. The engagement party introduces the horror who is Portia's mother-in-law to be (sadly, she might seem familiar to you too). There's also something lurking out there that won't be revealed for a long time. I enjoyed this0 it's not deep and it's one that made me both smile and shake my head because I recognized the situations. Anthony's got great storytelling chops. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. A very good read.
I enjoyed reading this book so much!! I thought it was funny in all of the right places and emotional in the same. It is the kind of book that changes your life.
This is a novel about female friendship, and if you like fun books about girl power, you'll like this.
I have mixed thoughts about it. It started out strong, and the four women friends are all real. likeable, developed characters, each with her own characterization and story. The writing is excellent and engaging.
However, I felt like it fell short in some important places. The plot was thin. The novel was more about each person's struggles and wins in her own life, with some chapters pulling them together. There were also chapters interspersed with stories about how the friends met and what happened to them in their single days. It kind of jumps from each girl's story to the next, and you have to remember what's happening at each point.
I also found the ending to be very anticlimactic. Instead of the expected confrontation and culmination, the problem that was building up just....disappeared. I would have loved to see the friends do some power move to demonstrate their bond. That would have been satisfying. There's just this bland finish. Also, Doris...people that horrible don't really exist! Do they? She didn't have much nuance.
I enjoyed reading this, but it could have packed a stronger punch.
3.5 stars rounded down to 3.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for an advanced copy for review. All opinions are my own.
I loved this book. It wasn’t like anything I’ve read before. The characters are relatable and I enjoyed the ride.
As a woman who raised a couple of children while juggling a job and everything else that came with moving through life's struggles and joys, I connected with this story! Thank you to the author for reminding me about the strength and potential of flexibility of women.
“Tired Ladies Take a Stand" is a book that I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys reading women's fiction. This novel is sure to resonate with many readers. The story centers around four women who have been best friends since their 20’s and have remained close for several decades since. The strength of their friendship is a constant through all of life's ups and downs.
The novel is written so beautifully that I found myself feeling all the emotions that the characters were going through. The author, Gretchen Anthony, has a way of connecting her readers with the characters in such a way that you feel like you are right there with them, experiencing everything they are experiencing.
The plot is well-developed, and the characters are multi-dimensional and relatable. The book is a page-turner, and I found myself unable to put it down until I finished it. I am eagerly waiting for more books from Gretchen Anthony in the future.
