I wanted to like this picture book badly but unfortunately, it fell flat for me.
The writing and storyline lack serious creativity. It reads like someone came up with the plot AND wrote the entire book in under 30 minutes.
Lastly, while the cover is adorable, the illustrations throughout the book could be more refined because they scream beginner-at-procreate 🥲
Womp, womp.
Better luck next time!
This is a cute book with a sweet message. I enjoyed the illustrations and the adorable characters. Loneliness is a difficult concept for young kids to understand and articulate. This book has the potential to be a great tool in developing an expanded emotional vocabulary.
The Lonely Otter is a cute book about how being alone doesn't necessarily mean being lonely. I liked that it honored the experiences and preferences of these two lone otters. I didn't love that the loneliness was fixed by one otter befriending the other but I did like the message that we can all find our people. The illustrations were really fun! This would be a great book to go along with SEL discussions, especially about making friends and understanding others. I'd recommend it for a library, classroom, or child to read.
A shy otter meets Ottilie, an otter who likes the quiet.
Otto is a shy otter who which often leaves him being alone. He spots another otter whom he thinks is also lonely. He searches for and discovers Ottilie and realizes that being alone doesn't always mean one is lonely.
This charming book by DK publishers is a welcome addition to books celebrating Valentine and friendships. Otter is a shy otter but learns to be brave and ask for help in finding Ottilie, an otter who loves the quiet. Children can rest assured that being alone doesn't always mean loneness. A highly recommended book just in time for Valentine with a happy union of Otto and Ottilie.
This is a cute Valentine’s Day book about being shy, being brave and making a new friend. It’s a cute story. The illustrations are so adorable. My 6 yr old liked that the otter was no longer lonely and was able to make a friend. She loved it!
The best part of this little book is the adorable illustration. The palette of soft colors features a lot of pink heart shapes. The otters are fuzzy and cute. There isn't much of a story, but I guess there isn't much room for one in a board book. Still, the art makes it a nice Valentine's gift for the little ones.
This is a really cute picture book. I liked that the ending was that it is okay to be alone. The ending felt slightly too quick, but I enjoyed the story overall. It will be a cute addition to my library's collection.
This is a simple and cute Valentine's story about two otters who like to spend time by themselves. They find each other and fall in love. Adorable illustrations make this holiday book a lot of fun!
This was a cute story, but doesn't really stand out as super unique. I think it definitely fits into a Valentine's theme so for marketing purposes it's probably gonna sell well.
The cover is super adorable and really made my 2 year old want this book read to her. This is a well illustrated book about Otto the lonely otter, it explores the feeling of loneliness and making friends. It's an easy to read book for young readers with beautifully done illustrations.
Thank you to Net Galley for this e-copy of The Lonely Otter in exchange for a honest review. This is a perfect book to discuss with preschoolers the difference between lonely and alone.Otto is a very shy otter who is lonely and has a hard time making friends and Otilie is an otter that likes to spend time alone because the other otters are too noisy. They both find out that being together and having a friend is much more fun.Great book for Valentine’s Day.
Such a cute simple book that had precious illustrations. I mean who doesn’t love otters? It’s a brief story on how being alone doesn’t mean you have to be lonely and how sometimes we can just take it one step at a time and be brave.
Otto the otter likes to play by himself while other otters prefer to play with each other. One day Otto sees an another playing by herself. He swims over to introduce himself and play with her. This story is perfect to teach little ones that sometimes it is okay to play by themselves. Then, if they want to play with others it’s also important to introduce themselves. The illustrations are very cute. Highly recommend for little ones.
Thank you NetGalley and DK Children for sending me an ARC in exchange of an honest review of the book received.
This is the cutest book! It talks about valentine's day, but you can read it throughout the year. This would be a wonderful classroom read aloud and then talk about friendships.
A very sweet and simple story that can be relatable to many children even older kids. Otter is shy and lonely and he learns a valuable lesson. It's alright to be alone sometimes if it makes us comfortable, but we are never alone. Others can be noisy and sometimes overwhelming, but they are still our friends because they accept us as we are, quiet, shy, and second-guessing. A great Valentine's book for children.
I found the artwork very pleasant, the page design great and the font size perfect. I like the characters and how large the illustrations are.
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for this e-ARC.
This is a sweet story about friendship and love. Otto the otter is shy and lonely. Other otters invite him to play, but he's too shy. One day he sees Ottilie, also alone on the rocks, and decides to ask her to play. He overcomes his shyness, she is eager to play with him, and a friendship blossoms.
This would make a nice Valentine's Day read aloud. Young kids will enjoy the sweet illustrations and playful otters.
A cute book about Otto the Otter who is lovely. One day, he decides to branch out and finds friendship and love. Very cute book with cute illustrations!
The Lonely Otter was a very cute book. The illustrations are fun and engaging. The text didn’t flow as well as it could have, but my four year old still e joyed the book. It has a great message for kids about the difference between being lonely and being alone. Sweet book for young kids.
This book is really cute, but the dialogue is a little clunky. The illustrations are beautiful! I will recommend to my friends with little ones.
