Third son Jasper becomes suspicious when several of his male family members die and he suddenly finds himself a duke. He goes to the bow street runners to get them to investigate. Attracted to Shelby instantly, he is thrilled when she is the runner assigned to the case. They find love while spending time together looking for a murderer. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest review.
I have been waiting all series for Shelby Slade's story! This book didn't disappoint.
Of course since this is Bow Street Runner Miss Slade's romance, it is a mystery too. I had figured out the mystery part fairly early on, but that didn't sway me from being intrigued.
Jasper Lincoln, a 3rd son and clergy, hired Miss Slade to look into his brother and father's mysterious deaths. Bringing Shelby into his staff helped her get close to the suspects, but also Jasper.
This is another book in the series with a strong female lead and a Duke that is happy to encourage her passion in an area not typical of a lady. I felt a good wrap up with this book and throughly enjoyed it.
Thank you to Dragonblade and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this ARC for my honest review.
Even though I guessed the book from the beginning. I still enjoyed reading it. The "I was right all along" feeling was welcomed. I was very happy to see that Shelby got her own happy ever after. And Jasper is the perfect fit for her.
The book in this series I have been waiting for. Reading about Miss Slade in the earlier book in the series just piqued my interest because she is unusual, smart and efficient. This story does not disappoint! She meets her perfect match but has to contend with a type of love that turns obsessive and manic.
I received an ARC from Netgalley and leaving my review voluntarily.
Thanks NetGalley for a fun read in this great series. Jasper is the third son of a Duke and very happy with his Living in his father's parish. He has gone to be with his parents for Christmas. He is shocked to find his father so ill. The same day his father dies his oldest brother falls down the stairs and breaks his neck. Then a letter comes that his second brother was killed in battle. Now he is the duke.
Shelby has had a rough life and when she is still young she is asked to go home with a man and meet his wife. She becomes the daughter they never had and they raise her and educate her. He is a Bow Street runner and when she grows up Shelby is the first female one to work for them.
Jasper goes to them for help because his father and his brother are too much of a coincidence for his comfort. He has his brother's daughters to raise now and one of them was by her father when he was found, since then she hasn't spoken. Shelby and Jasper work to find out what happened. In the mean time they are falling in love. Is there a crime, can it be solved.?
This one is the final book of the series, where we get to see how Shelby becomes an accomplished Bow Street Runner. We’ve seen Shelby at work many times throughout the series, solving cases for the other sudden dukes. This book features Jasper, a third son of a duke and vicar, who suddenly becomes a duke when his father passes away from illness, his oldest brother drunkenly falls down the stairs, and his second oldest brother dies at war. The timing of his oldest brother’s death along with his father’s death seems to be suspicious, so Jasper heads to hire a Bow Street Runner to investigate. The very accomplished Shelby is assigned to the case and she poses as Jasper’s new secretary to blend in with the household. The romance here was fairly straightforward, with Jasper deciding pretty quickly that he wants to marry Shelby after the investigation is over. However, finding out the cause of deaths for Jasper’s family members is much more complicated and kept me very invested in the story.
As a whole I did not enjoy this series as much of some of the author's previous ones. With that being said, Investigating the Duke is my favorite. Having met Shelby in some of the previous books I was eager to learn more about her and find out more about how she came to be a Bow Street Runner. Her backstory is a sad one and I was so happy when she found the Franklins. Her commitment to helping others only made me like her more. I liked that she and Jasper had spent time together and had time to develop a supportive friendship of sorts before he realized (and announced) that he wanted her to be his wife. The scenes with them and the girls were some of my favorites because it was then they were most comfortable and able to just be themselves. As for the big mystery here, the killer does not come as a big surprise at all (nor does the question of Jasper's parentage). I had my suspicions about Darrow pretty early on, the only big surprise with him was how far he was willing to go on behalf of the woman he loved. Jasper's realization that he didn't know this man as well as he thought was a sad moment. The only part of that wrap-up that I didn't like was that in the end Jasper let two of the people responsible for what happened to his father get away with no punishment. it was nice to get a little cameo from one of the couples from the previous books (I'll let it be a surprise as to which couple).
How sweet. This is the final story in this series and the ending was just adorable. I was not expecting this book to star Shelby but was very happy to see get her happy ending after learning more of her origin story in this book. The only negative is I did guess the big twist and who done it quite quickly and I think I would have liked a tad bit more mystery. Jasper was not the typical rake which I really appreciated as well. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Jasper is a 3rd son who becomes the Duke within a day when his father and 2 brothers die.
He becomes suspicious of the unusual circumstances of their deaths and hires a Bow Street runner for the investigation. Shelby is the only female working at Bow Street and is hired by Jasper who,is immediately attracted to her. Despite their differences, they develop a friendship furthering into love.
Many hidden secrets, plot twists, and surprises threaten their world.
Another story about strong independent working women which was unique to the time period.
Enjoyable read, standalone but the whole series is worthwhile.
From a master storyteller comes a book that has exciting action, romance, characters that have depth and charisma. An impressive regency story that takes you on a journey you will never forget!
