THE AMAZING POWER OF GIRLS merges an introduction to basic physics concepts with a joyful celebration of the power of girls. Colorful illustrations that highlight a diverse array of young girls in action are paired with rhyming—or just about rhyming—text to illustrate a variety of concepts, including buoyancy, friction, tension, and gravity. There’s lots to look at in the illustrations, which are detailed and inclusive. Backmatter provides child-friendly definitions of each concept. There are many layers to the book, which makes it interesting and accessible to a variety of readers. This informative and engaging read centering STEM content and girls will be a great addition to classrooms and school libraries.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sharing an eARC of the book with me.
This book is a great start to science concepts for little girls. I thought it may have been a bit much for younger audiences, but older elementary students will likely enjoy it. The rhythm throughout the book was solid, and the forced rhyme scheme added some extra dimension to the words.
This lyrical, rhythmic book is great for girls of all ages. It can be used as a read aloud to young girls to celebrate the power of women, and may encourage them to pursue a STEM career. It is easy to read and the illustrations are inclusive and beautiful. It is a quick, engaging read for any age.
I enjoyed reading this title with my 8 year old daughter. She liked hearing some of the scientific terms, like friction & magnets and we liked the rhyming poetry. Even if terms may seem advanced for younger children, the illustrations and focus on girls gets an A+ in my book. I could also see an elementary school librarian or teacher reading this in library or science class. I appreciated a detailed description of each force in the back of book.
Thank you for the advanced reader's copy!
I received an electronic ARC from SOURCEBOOKS Kids through NetGalley.
Marianayagam tackles female empowerment in the STEM fields. Readers see how they are like the to various forces and how they impact life. She encourages them to challenge themselves and not give up. I appreciate how science is woven through the book to introduce terms needed in future careers. The illustrations are inclusive and model a wide variety of career paths. Readers will find themselves and their friends somewhere on these pages. The author also includes scientific definitions for the forces, as well as how to apply them to their lives. Looking forward to sharing this and opening dialogue on future possibilities.
I LOVED the first line of this book "I am a force to be reckoned with..." I think this book is a great conversation starter. Some of the concepts and themes would be hard for them to get, but it has such a good message.
I understand the idea of the book, showing that girls can have all of the qualities for STEM learning, jobs, characteristics. But I found the text awkward. Not sure why some letters are capital?
I chose this book purely because of the cover and title and it ended up being different from what I thought it would be. That’s not a bad thing though because it was a really cool explanation of the different forces you learn about in physics with illustrations of girls and women to show examples. It was a really fun way to talk about this STEM subject! I also liked that in the back of the book there were more in-depth explanations for past the toddler stage and further reading for those that want even more. The illustrations were really fun for my daughter and I enjoyed them a lot too.
This book was very confusing. I understood at the end that it was supposed to be STEM themed, but the book itself was confusing. I tried to read it with my 7 year old daughter who loves science and she, and I, were so confused. The images were beautiful and I think the message it was trying to convey was nice. But it was hard to read.
I’m on the fence with this book. I’m going to give it 4 stars because of the emphasis on STEM and careers that girls can get into. I enjoyed the diversity in the pictures and the positivity of the message. Some of the text did not seem to mesh well and appeared confusing on how they relate to an actual person. Other parts of the text made complete sense and how girl power is possible when you try hard and stay resilient. I also liked the glossary in the back on the definitions of all the words. I believe there is a lot that can be talked about with this book.
This is a very well done children's book. It is full of colorful pictures and fun characters. A wonderful read for any child!
A great book that teaches girls about science words but also the amazing power girls have. I loved the message in this book and the illustrations!
I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
