A podcaster to trying to solve a cold case and the girl everyone thinks is responsible team up to uncover what really happened to her best friend.
Ok, this thriller renewed my faith in the genre! We have an unreliable MC, a murder podcast and a thoroughly engaging mixed media format in this fast paced & suspenseful thriller about a girl who is found walking around with her best friend’s blood on her but can’t recall what happened.
I was gripped! The memory loss/amnesia angle can be very hit or miss but I’m here to tell you - this one is a HIT! It was an unputdownable listen. I had that urgent feeling that I just had to get to the end to know the truth that has been lacking in recent thrillers I read. With the mixed media and podcast angle - this was so good to listen to on audio. Highly recommend listening.
Lucy was unreliable due to her memory loss and the dark thoughts plaguing her but she was also an MC that you find yourself rooting for. I loved her sarcasm and her I don’t care attitude. And her grandma was an OG - I freakin loved her so much.
If you are in the mood for a fast paced thriller - don’t miss this one. It delivers!
At the start of this novel, main character Lucy was found 5 years ago at the scene of her best friend Savvy’s murder in the woods, covered in her blood - and with a head injury such that she had zero memory of what happened. People in her Texas town suspected her, but she was never charged, and she moved away and tried to start over. But when a true crime podcast decides to cover the unsolved murder for her latest season, and Lucy’s grandmother asks her to come home for her birthday party, everything gets stirred up again and Lucy starts trying to figure out what happened. Interspersed with Lucy’s narrative are segments from the faux podcast in the book.
And wow, now that’s what I call a good mystery/thriller! I’m usually over the unreliable narrator, but Lucy’s amnesia makes it make sense - though it turns out she is withholding some other info from us too! Her snarky sensibility also gives this one a different tone, and I always love a faux book podcast!
Listen for the Lie, a fast paced mystery where a podcast host attempts to help solve a five year old of who killed Savvy. Everyone thinks it is Lucy, Savvy's best friend, who was found close to the scene covered in blood. But there is one problem, Lucy can't remember anything that happened that night. As the story unfolds, you are introduced to various characters who have things to hide and a different light to shed on this mystery.
I enjoyed the humor and snarkiness of the main character, the bits of romanced peppered through the story, and the the different POV's from the various characters. I don't love amnesia plot devices but enjoyed this one more than most. If you are looking for something that grabs you from the beginning and keeps you turning the pages, this is the book for you. I think it would be awesome in audio with the whole podcast plot line.
Thanks to NetGalley and Celdon Books for access to the digital Advanced Reader Copy.
What if you thought you murdered your best friend? And if everyone else thought so too?
What an interesting premise! You'd know if you murdered your best friend...right? Well, Lucy sure doesn't. But she wants to find out.
I REALLY enjoyed this one and could not put it down. I loved how Lucy was written, the right balance of snark and humor and heart. I would absolutely read anything else that Amy Tintera puts out.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Many thanks, Celadon Books and NetGalley, for the ARC! This book was SO good. It was a fun thriller that had all of the elements I love in a book and kept me guessing. I really enjoyed this author's writing style and look forward to reading more books from them!
A fun, twisty thriller! I thoroughly enjoyed this and definitely did not have it figured out up until the very end. Highly recommend!
This book reminded me a lot of None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell with a blend of humor added in. I liked it well enough and enjoyed it but I can’t say that it was my absolute favorite. I do like cozy mystery/thrillers and this really hit the spot for that purpose. Thank you so much for the eARC!
WOW….wow. I have never even heard of Amy Tintera until I read Listen for the Lie. I am in love with her writing style and this story.
Lucy Chase is a girl from a small town. After high school, she leaves but comes back married and moves into a great big house designed for the more affluent population of Plumpton TX. She reunited with an old high school friend, Savannah, Savvy as her friends call her. During a wedding for mutual friends Savvy ends up dead and the blame is placed on Lucy. She has no memory of the incident and the police can more charge her for the crime as there is no substantial evidence. Lucy decides the best thing for her is to leave and not come back to her home town. Until five years later, her grandma asks her to come home for her birthday party. Lucy does and she is now faced with dealing with a true crime podcaster, Ben.
Things begin to heat up as Ben interviews friends and family of Lucy and Savvy and lies and coverups come to the forefront.
This is a must read for those that like great writing and great characters. I found myself pulling for Lucy the entire time. I was very happy for the ending but was surprised as well.
Thank you #netgalley #celedonbooks and #amytintera for writing a great book
I really enjoyed this book. It was different than anything else I've read recently. I couldn't put it down! I will keep an eye out for this author's future work!
This was SO fun!! I really loved this book. I’m so grateful I got the opportunity to read it from netgalley and the publisher. I will certainly be recommending this one. I really was rooting for Lucy the whole time. She was so funny. The podcast format was really cool too! I also really grew to like Ben too.
This is the first book that I have liked and finished in a long time. The main character, Lucy was so funny in not only her actions but her thoughts as well which we get to read a lot of! I also loved the suspenseful, kind of twisted plot line about Lucy having killed her best friend in the woods five years ago and everyone thinks she is guilty. Her grandma is the odd man out convinced that Lucy did not it.
She had a hit on the head and got amnesia from most of the night which explains why she can't remember what happened. As a podcaster from LA, Ben Owens is doing a podcast on the murder of Savanah (Savvy), who was Lucy's best friend at the time. She eventually joins Ben in his search for clues and memories of the fateful evening when the killing took place. Lucy is a fabulous narrator with her snarky sarcasm describing what is going on was one thing I totally loved. The sparks flying between Lucy and Ben really added to the story along with several other characters like her Grandma, her ex-husband, her parents and the whole town seeing Lucy as guilty. Definitely a thriller not to be missed!! Loved this one!! Thanks for the ARC!!
4-4.5 stars...
Fast paced, addictive, & enthralling. Well written – switching from Lucy’s POV and Ben’s podcast episodes, which kept the momentum fresh and current. Lucy was sarcastic and savage, so there were plenty of laugh out loud moments. Recommend if you’re looking for an addictive page turner!
Thank you to the publisher for my #gifted copy.
This was a fun thriller, twisty but also humourous, a rare combo!
I really like the main character, she was a wise cracking good time, who hid her underneath well.
I really didn't know what was going to happen until the end, and it was interesting and easy to read!
I couldn't put this one down! I loved the internal monologue Lucy had throughout the book and her general attitude - talk about confidence to just own your story.
I really enjoyed the way this story developed and flowed. The pacing was excellent and the author did a great job of leaving you guessing as to who murdered Savvy. I can typically figure these kinds of "whodunit" novels out by the second chapter, but I truly didn't expect this one and was delighted by the way it all played out. It really felt like everyone got what they deserved and it left me feeling joyful....? Which I'll admit is an odd feeling to have after reading about a violent crime.
In a word (make that two) dark humor is how I'd describe this book, so if that's your jam - definitely give this one a chance. This one easily earned those 5 stars from me.
This book had me HOOK, LINE and THRILLER from the first page! 🤩 As an avid true crime podcast listener, I haven’t been this excited to read a book in, well, forever!
True crime Podcast with an intriguing host ✅
Murder ✅
Snarky but lovable main character ✅
A true whodunit ✅
Twists that give you whiplash ✅
I absolutely loved this book! So many possible suspects, so little time! I went into this read really hoping that having the podcast angle was going to be done as well as some of the best true crime podcasts out there today. It did NOT disappoint. In fact, the podcast host was genuine in that he wanted the truth no matter what it was. AND the podcast added details you couldn’t have gotten elsewhere in the story. . Truly, it was well done.
Five years ago, Lucy, the main character, is found wandering the streets with blood on her clothes after her best friend was murdered the night before, only Lucy doesn’t remember anything. Did she do it? How would you feel if you couldn’t remember such a traumatic event and everyone, including your own parents think you did it?
And now, a big time podcaster wants to dig into Lucy’s story to figure out what really happened once and for all.
The book was 100% unputdownable!!! And the ending is very satisfying! Chefs kiss 💋
Thank you to Celedon books, Amy Tintera and NetGalley for the early copy.

This was a wild ride of a book. Podcaster meets up with so called murderer to get at what seems the impossible truth. My first read from this Author and won't be my last. Gripping read!
Thank you to Netgalley, Celadon Books and the Author Amy Tintera for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is incredibly binge-worthy. I couldn’t put it down! It was so compelling and I couldn’t wait to see how it all played out. The pacing was excellent and the different points-of-view mixed with podcast interviews made this a true page-turner. I loved it! Can’t wait to read more from this author.
Very unique thriller about a young woman, Lucy, who everyone assumes murdered her best friend Savvy. No evidence, so she went free and now she's back in her small Texas hometown because a podcaster has decided to focus on the case. She cooperates because she lost her memory after the attack and truly doesn't know whether she was responsible. Loved the witty smart dialogue, as well as the twist to the suppressed memory narrative. Highly recommend.
I was hooked from the first pages. I fell asleep reading and picked it back up in the morning. I loved Ben’s cocky but sweet smugness. Lucy’s sarcastic comments during awkward situations were hilarious. I loved her grandmother’s personality even more. I’ve never laughed so much while reading a thriller like I did while reading Lucy & the grandmother’s interactions with other people. I would love to see a series come from this with Ben’s podcasts solving other cold cases (but not without Lucy and her grandmother of course 😏)
Listen for the Lie is definitely my favorite thriller in 2024 this far. The protagonist is hilarious and imperfect and the plot moves along at a speedy pace! I couldn’t put this one down and loved the podcast interviews interspersed throughout the book. The ending was supremely satisfactory and did not disappoint.
