This was deliciously twisted and witty. The characters were sarcastic and lovable, especially Beverly, the grandmother I would love to have. The writing was superb and it kept pointing the finger at so many different people, I honestly didn’t know who was at fault until the very end. When I tell you I couldn’t put this book down, I MEAN IT! I was reading every free minute I had. It was dark and daunting but humorous at the same time. The storyline was well thought out and the character development was great. This was my first book by Amy Tintera but it definitely won’t be my last. One of the best books I’ve read to date!
Thank you for the ARC ! This book was so good I could not put it down. I definitely did not see any of the twists coming at all. Story was well written and flowed really well!!
Wow! This is probably the best thriller that I have read this year! I was glued to the edge of my seat because I had to know who did it!!!
Lucy is in a tough spot one night her best friend is found murdered and to make things worse she is found covered in her blood and cannot remember anything about that night. When they did not have enough evidence to charge her with her friend's murder, the whole town firmly believed that she had killed Savvy and she had gotten away with murder. Knowing her whole hometown hated her she moved to another state and attempted to start a new life and leave the past behind her. That was until two things happened: One she had to return to her hometown for her grandmother's birthday and two there was a podcaster doing a podcast about Savvy's murder and was determined to find the truth. Reluctantly she returned home and started helping the podcaster with the show because she honestly wanted to know what happened to her friend. Slowly things and secrets started to unravel and everything was not as cut and dry as the community once thought. Will all the secrets and lies come out, will Lucy and Ben (the podcaster) figure out what happened that fatal night or did Lucy kill Savvy? Check out this book for a thrilling ride full of secrets, lies, and deception as Lucy tries to piece together her memory for that night! Thank you Celadon Books and Netgalley for the extraordinary opportunity to read and review this one! It was a delightfully suspenseful afternoon glued to the book!
I like how this book is constructed, intercalating Lucy’s life with the podcast episodes. Lucy is from a small town and was accused of killing her best friend. She can’t remember anything from that night. Five years later a true crime podcaster decides to investigate the case and turns her life upside down.
Listen for the Lie was a masterpiece of a contemporary thriller, and I was surprised to learn this was the author’s adult debut. I loved the spin on the unreliable main character having constant visions of how she would murder anyone she interacted with, accompanied by a voice urging her to take those actions.
While Lucy is made out to be a despised FMC that already wasn’t well liked even before she was suspected of murdering her best friend, I found Lucy to be hilarious. Her dry humor and dark sarcasm had me laughing out loud throughout the whole book. I also loved her relationship with her grandmother, and her grandmother herself.
The pace of the book never seemed to wane as little plot twists popped up multiple times, making it very hard to put the book down. I won’t say if I guessed the ending, but it definitely kept me on my toes the whole time.
If you like thrillers and whodunnits, this was a super fun and unique one to read. It was absolutely delightful 😈.
Thanks to @NetGalley and @CeladonBooks for the eARC of this book! #gifted
🥳Happy Pub Day!!! 🥳
I can't believe this was the authors debut adult novel . Kudos 👏
It's amazingly gripping
This entire book is like that Netflix show you just need to binge . It sucks you into all the drama ! & There's soooo much of it ! The podcast angle imo was a nice pace to the book . Added an extra element that I personally enjoyed.
I love a book that surprises me & this book delivered !!!!
It was also hilarious. I know I know it was about a murder but between Beverly who btw was easily my favorite character , Ben, & Lucy I was busting up . Lucy's mom has some pretty good one liners but I wasn't a huge fan of her character.
Overall I 100% recommend this book. Something here for everyone I think. 🖤

Thoughts:
I can see why this one got so many raving early reviews!! I was shocked when I realized this is the author’s adult debut. The story was quick paced and very bingeable. I read it in one sitting! There are a lot of characters, but I didn’t find them hard to keep up with. The main character, Lucy, was your classic unreliable narrator, which I love. Her dark humor made her unique, & I found her easy to root for. Even if a little suspicious🤪 Side characters were entertaining, especially grandma. I went back and forth on who I thought was the killer. By the end I guessed it, but it didn’t take away from the fun of the story. I loved the theme of society’s judgements on who people deem trustworthy and the issues with these stereotypes!
Thank you to NetGalley and Celadon Books for this early and free copy of Listen for the Lie.
This book…omg. I literally could not put it down. I haven’t read a book this fast or a book I’ve loved this much in a long time.
The writing was witty and hilarious and I loved how the story unfolded.
The twist genuinely shocked me. The whole time I didn’t have a clue as to “whodunnit”.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves thrillers or just entertaining books in general!
Love love loved this book!
Wow wow wow! Thank you Netgalley, Amy Tintera, and Celadon books for this ebook! I honestly enjoyed every minute of this book and it probably took me longer to read because I didn't want to miss a thing. I was so wrapped into Lucy's story. This was so well written. I couldn't recommend it more! One of the best books of the year for me!!!
Warning: You will not be able to put this book down once you start reading it.
What a great mystery! I absolutely loved the set up…small town murder mystery story told in two POVs - Lucy, who is accused of murdering her friend but doesn’t remember what really happened, and Ben – true crime podcaster who is determine to uncover the truth of who the true killer was. There are so many twists and turns that you can’t get those pages turned quickly enough to find what really happened.
Grandma was my favorite character and I loved how she stood behind her granddaughter - Lucy when everyone else turned their back on her.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that likes a fast paced mystery with a touch of humor.
Thank you NetGalley, Celadon Books and the author for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book took me a little bit to get into the snarky voice and first person narration, but once I was in it I was IN IT. This is a great thriller/murder mystery where our main character is the main suspect because she has no memory of the night her best friend was murdered, and she was discovered covered in her best friend’s blood. The whole book has a cinematic quality with Lucy being haunted by a vision of her murdered best friend, who encourages her to kill others constantly. It was a little unsettling to picture in my mind and I loved that!
Also, I thought for sure I had this book figured out about halfway in, and I was so wrong! I loved how this whole plot played out. It was a book I couldn’t put down!
This was better than I expected. I was completely blown away but it’s worth the five stars.
This is a story to sit down and enjoy. It’s a great whodunnit.
Quotes that stuck out to me:
People don’t believe women who fight back. When men lash out, people say he lost control of his temper or made a terrible mistake. When a woman does it she’s a psychopath.
Eternal Gratitude.
Some people will never believe you no matter how hard you explain yourself. Trust me there’s no pleasing people. If they’re determined to think the worst of you, they will.
Thank you netgalley for this opportunity.
✨Happy Pub Day!✨
“A podcaster has decided to ruin my life, so I’m buying a chicken…..It’s an apology chicken, for my boyfriend. It’s like that engagement chicken. The one women make to persuade their boyfriends to propose? Except this is a ‘sorry I didn’t tell you I’m the prime suspect in my friend’s murder’ chicken. Apology chicken, for short.”
Thus, the reader is introduced to Lucy Chase, the anti-hero(ine) in Listen for the Lie, YA author, Amy Tintera’s adult novel debut. Five years ago, Lucy was found wandering the streets, covered in her best friend, Savvy’s, blood, with no memory of what happened. Now, she’s the subject of a true crime podcast, and she returns to the hometown from which she fled five years ago to face the proverbial music.
The story alternates between Lucy’s point-of-view and transcripts from the podcast episodes. Whip-smart, sarcastic, and hilarious, Lucy constantly imagines murdering whoever is standing in front of her - her ex-husband, Matt; her cousin, Ashley; her dad. As Lucy tries to fill in the gaps of her memory, she gets close to the podcaster (who may or may not be cuter than Chris Evans), eventually agreeing to an interview. All of this happens against the backdrop of a small Texas town in the Hill Country, which Amy Tintera, a former Austin resident, nails.
The supporting cast of characters and the well-written podcast episodes make this thriller a standout. Everyone from Lucy’s parents and Savvy’s younger sister to the guy Lucy was cheating on her ex-husband with and her sassy 80-year old grandma has a theory about what happened the night of the murder, and they’re more than happy to spill the tea on the podcast. The show’s episodes are essential to understanding the characters’ motivations, filling in the murder timeline, and propagating theories about why Lucy (may have) killed her best friend.
I loved this dark, twisty, irreverent black comedy and would read it again, something I rarely do. Actually, I would listen to the audiobook because I’ve heard it’s fantastic.
Thanks to NetGalley and Celadon for the digital ARC in exchange for my review.
This book definitely lived up to all the hype! It was SO GOOD!! I'm a little obsessed with books that have a podcast element to them, and this one is hands down the best that I've read!
The characters were so well written. I loved Lucy's sarcasm and dark humor and that she made a good unreliable narrator. Ben, although a bit smug, was determined to put out a great podcast and hopefully solve the mystery of who killed Savvy. And Grandma Beverly was quite funny and entertaining!
This book was such a page turner! It kept me in suspense with all the twists. It made me laugh at times and made my jaw drop once or twice!
If you're looking for a great mystery/thriller that you will fly through in no time, pick this one up!
I look forward to the author's next adult novel!
Lucy was tried and convicted by the court of public opinion for her best friend’s murder. Though the police never had enough for a formal conviction, Lucy has no memory of the night and isn’t even fully convinced herself that she’s not the murderer her hometown believes her to be. After moving away and mostly escaping her dark past, a podcaster reopens the case casting light on new evidence. We follow Lucy back to her hometown to try to find out what happened that night once and for all.
I LOVED this book, the pacing was perfect, the chapters were short and incorporated mixed media with podcast transcripts, the characters were morally grey and layered. Every time I thought I knew where the story was going, there was another unexpected twist or revelation. This is bound to be one of the best thrillers of 2024 🥳

It’s pub day and also LFL drop day! Off to drop one of my favorite reads of February, and probably 2024.
This is how you do unlikeable main characters. It’s a fine dance on making a character unlikable and not ruining the story. Amy Tintera is chefs kiss when it comes to Lucy. Lucy gives me very much a Gillian Flynn Sharp Objects type character. She’s self deprecating, makes the worst decisions, but someone out there believes in her. (It’s her grandma, Beverly, that’s who)
I have been over podcasts for a while now, so I didn’t know how I’d feel about this one. My only complaint is to sign a petition to make podcasts have better theme music. I love mixed media, so this was actually really well done. I loved the different sides of the story that were told and how they came about.
Audio was great. It was a whole production with the podcasting and recording. I loved it and highly recommend on audio if you’re an audio listener. I mean, it’s freaking January LaVoy, what else do you expect except perfection? Also, Will Damron? Yes. This combo was everything you need.
Overall, a hit. Solid 5 🏃♀️. I don’t want to spoil it but I loved the ending so much. The “aftermath” I guess you could call it. Lucy’s last line of the podcast too?! 🥹
Predict text: Listen for the ….
Listen for the latest episode of the podcast 😂😂
This fast-paced thriller features a true-crime podcast, a case of amnesia, and small-town idiosyncrasies. The best way I can describe it is a Mary Kay Andrews setting with an HBO plot, and I loved every aspect of the combination. The small Texas town and its many occupants are hysterical, full of life, and poking their noses into everyone else's business. Lucy, our main character, has long been the main suspect in her friend Savvy’s death.
When a podcaster named Ben comes to town, determined to solve the case, Lucy’s grandmother guilts her into meeting with him. What follows is a high-stress, fast-paced race to get as many answers as possible from the townspeople before they realize Ben isn’t looking for evidence to prove Lucy’s guilt.
I INHALED this book. Every moment I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it. I have really liked every thriller book with a podcast element (probably because I like podcasts), but this was the best version I’ve read so far. The plot’s pacing, woven together with Lucy’s memories and Ben’s podcast episodes, clearly had me on the edge of my seat.

Nothing like posting a review on Pub Day! I picked up Listen for the Lie late last week and just HAD to finish it last night to share my thoughts. 4.5/5 stars - that last half of a star was left off because I felt like there were just a few items that could’ve been cleaned up/explained to the reader a little bit better - but honestly, that must just be a personal preference. Do not let that stop you from picking up this book! Right off the bat, it reminded me of Truth Be Told on Apple TV - which I was obsessed with, so it makes sense that this book stuck to me, too. Lucy and her grandma were my absolute FAVORITE people - their no nonsense attitude added the perfect amount of levity and humor to this wonderful new thriller from Amy Tintera.
Lucy Chase finds herself at the center of a murder mystery when she’s accused of killing her best friend, Savvy. Despite having no memory of the night in question, Lucy is haunted by the accusations and the traumatic events that transpired years ago. Now, a true crime podcast hosted by Ben Owens is reigniting interest in the case, forcing Lucy to confront her past and return to her hometown in Texas.
With the help of her witty grandmother and an unexpected ally in Ben, Lucy navigates through small-town intrigue and family drama to uncover the truth, even if it means facing the possibility that she might be the killer everyone believes her to be.
This book captivated me from the very first page until the final sentence. The author skillfully crafted a narrative that kept me guessing at every character’s motives. It had me utterly engrossed, unable to stop reading and listening, since I devoured the audiobook too.
I have to give a special shoutout to the audiobook version, as the narrators did an exceptional job bringing the story to life. Their performances (especially the podcast parts) added an extra layer of depth to the already captivating tale, immersing me even further into Lucy’s world of small-town intrigue and dark secrets.
Overall, Listen for the Lie is a must-read (and must-listen) for fans of thrilling mysteries. It’s a wild ride from start to finish, and I can’t recommend it enough.
Thank you @celadonbooks @macmillan.audio and @netgalley for the gifted copy of this book.
Wow. This was 5 stars for me! I primarily read thrillers and usually they are predictable and played out - this was neither of those. Lucy was accused of her murderinf her best friend 5 years ago and has no memory of the night it happened. A podcaster is taking on the case to try and solve it. She heads back to her hometown where all sorts of new information and twists start coming out.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat and I finished in one day. I love the podcast episodes throughout because it feels like a real true crime podcast mystery. I had no idea who did it even up until the end. I will highly recommend this book!
Thanks to NetGalley and Celadon Books for the ARC.
