Listen for the Lie is told from the perspective of Lucy, a woman who is thought to have killed her best friend 10 years prior but has no memory of that night. Podcaster, Ben Owens starts digging into Savvy’s murder on his podcast “Listen for the Lie”. He contacts Lucy’s grandmother asking for assistance in getting Lucy to talk to him and because her grandmother has always believed in her innocence, she convinces Lucy to come back to Texas to face the past.
I Did I read the same book as everyone else?
I really wanted to like this, wanted to connect with the characters, wanted.... I'm not even sure what but this wasn't this. I never connected to any of the characters, found it not intriguing but rather boring, I couldn't keep straight who was sleeping with whom, who was cheating with whom and....kinda didn't care. This book sounded right up my alley but it didn’t quit hit the mark. The writing was a bit too YA for me to even get into.
Thank you to Netgalley and Celadon Books for a review copy.

⁣My thoughts- In a world of meh thrillers, I found a book that grabbed my attention and kept me entertained! I loved Listen For the Lie. Five years ago, Lucy woke up covered in her best friend’s blood with absolutely no memory. Now an entire town is convinced she murdered Saffy and the case is being studied by a handsome podcaster. ⁣
⁣⁣
⁣This book was so much fun! It’s fast paced, alternating between real life action and the podcast recordings, super twisty, and addicting! Lucy is a great character and I enjoyed her sarcastic humor. Other positives- dysfunctional family, lots of tension, short chapters and lots of secrets! ⁣

⁣Listen for the Lie might be my favorite thriller of 2024! Five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⁣

Listen for the Lie is a twisted and down right funny whodunnit novel. The chapters are short, and the added podcast episodes just brings it all together. The audio was top notch as well and I highly recommend listening if you enjoy audiobooks.

I honestly didn’t think I would chuckle so much while reading a thriller lol but the characters were great. Especially Beverly! she is a character I will forever remember 😂. This is a book you’ll want to binge in a day just to know who was behind everything because the author has you questioning everyone! Go pick this book up right now!

Thank you so much @celadonbooks and @NetGalley for this gifted copy! ♥️

Did I read the same book as everyone else?
3.5 rounded down I guess.
Look, I wanted to like this, wanted to connect with the characters, wanted.... I'm not even sure what but it wasn't this. I never connected to any of the characters, found it not intriguing but rather boring, I couldn't keep straight who was sleeping with whom, who was cheating with whom and....kinda didn't care. I'm probably the major outlier and if you dig the small town whodunnit murders, horny locals who apparently sleep with everyone and everyone, with the podcaster trope thrown in, you've found a winner in this one!

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read in exchange for my honest review.

This was a very entertaining, fast-paced mystery/thriller. It kept me guessing until the end. I found myself suspecting everyone, including the main character, at different times, which made for a fun read.

I enjoyed the podcast element and the flashbacks were used effectively. The characters were great for the most part. The ones that weren't were that way by design. They were still frustrating to read about though. In a good way, more or less.

I read an ARC of this book from NetGalley. All comments are my own.

Did Lucy kill Savvy? SHE doesn’t even know….

Lucy’s life changed the night her best friend was murdered…everyone believes she did it, but she has no memory of that night. Cue a true crime podcast focusing on Savvy’s murder for their next season, looking for the truth, and uncovering a whole lot throughout the process.

I absolutely loved the grandmother; she was my favorite character and the star of the book. I also loved Lucy’s sarcasm and dark humor. Although I don’t typically like the unreliable narrator trope (in this case having amnesia of the night of the murder), it actually worked for this book and I found I wasn’t annoyed by it.

🎧 podcast vibes
🎧 murder mystery
🎧 lots of red herrings
🎧 amnesia/unreliable narrator
🎧 small town drama
🎧 dark comedy

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (rounded up for GR)

Pub Date: 3/05/24 (next week!)

Thank you Celadon and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I love a good podcast thriller - there’s something about the combined listening and getting the backstory at the same time is just 😮‍💨 (see: a flicker in the dark, none of this is true)

so it’s absolutely NO surprise that I loved this one too! the way that the amnesia trope is mixed with a neighborhood thriller was done so well, and I binged the entire thing in one day as I tried to figure out the whodunnit!!!

while I did enjoy my guess more rather than the ultimate murderer, the journey was SO worth it 🫡 and reaffirms my scaredy cat attitude towards men and being nice towards men LMFAO

the cast of characters was so well-rounded and balanced that I found myself expecting every single person (even the sweet ol grannie) at one time or another 🤪

this is such a fast paced and bingeable thriller - thank you to netgalley and henry holt for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review!

Can I give this 10 stars? I was HOOKED by the first line. I started this book this morning, worked 8 hours, and then finished it as soon as I had a chance. I loved the characters so much and I there were so many lines or scenarios that were actually really hilarious! Lucy’s attitude and sarcasm is so endearing and Beverly is amazing and I love everything about her. And that voice in Lucy’s head? Classic! In my mind the voice sounded like a creepy clown which made it all the more interesting to me.

5 out of 5 stars!

Lucy is unable to remember what went down the night her best friend, Savvy, got murdered. Their small town believes Lucy is guilty, since she is the one wandering the streets covered in Savvy’s blood after the gruesome murder. But why would Lucy murder her? She was married to the dreamiest guy in town and had everything she ever wanted. Savvy was the social butterfly around town too, always kind and welcoming to everyone. They were known for being best friends around town. After the murder, Lucy leaves Texas to live in Los Angeles to start a new life. But when a podcaster, Ben Owens, investigates Savvy’s murder for the second season of his famous podcast, Lucy is forced to return to her hometown and ends up investigating the murder. So, will she uncover herself as the murderer?

When I got “Listen for the Lie” by Amy Tintera, I forgot about the other books I had to read, and I put it at the top of my list! And let me say, I was not disappointed! This book may very well be THE book of 2024. It had mystery, romance, and comedy. What else do you need?

I have never loved a character more than I loved Lucy. She was smart, calculated, and so darn funny! There was actually a point in the story where I laughed out loud, not a common thing you can do with thrillers. All the characters, honestly, were so well-developed. If I could meet any character in real life, it would be Lucy’s grandma, Beverly. I won’t go into too much detail without spoiling the story, but trust me, you should read this book for the characters alone.

This book was so refreshing. It still had everything about a thriller I liked, a jaw-dropping twist and a murder that is plausible, but the podcast scenes and the comedy were unlike anything I’ve seen more. Ben Owens, the podcaster, interviews people throughout the book, and parts of the book were podcast transcripts. It was super easy to follow and really helped the flow of the book. And the comedy of this book was amazing! Like I said before, I laughed out loud at some of the comments. It was so refreshing for a character to actually voice funny remarks rather than keep them bottled up.

I did not see the twist coming! It was a total shock up until the very end, but it made me think about everything that I missed leading up to it. The storyline is something that will make this book stand out to readers for years to come. This book was a fast read with no dull moments.

Thank you to Celadon Books, author Amy Tintera, and NetGallery for a digital ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Listen for the Lie was fun to read. I can see what the fuss was all about. I had high hopes I would love the book but I kept waiting for something that never happened. The storyline was interesting and had potential. I liked the idea of someone not remembering if she murdered her best friend or not. You learned what happened as Lucy did.

I did love Lucy’s grandmother. She’s hilarious! I got a little sick of the small town drama and everyone sleeping with everyone else. I think parts of the drama could be left out.

Thank you NetGalley and Celadon books for the ARC! It was a fun ride even if it didn’t end the way I was hoping!

I really did not expect to love this book as much as I did! I’m usually a hard pass when I see a podcast mentioned in books, however this book was getting lots of hype in my circle and I had major FOMO. I finally took the leap and picked it up and boy, am I glad I did!

A twisty whodunit with spunk, I don’t think I’ve laughed so much reading a thriller, and it was for all the right reasons. The character development in this book is top notch, with each main cast member having their own distinct personality that makes every interaction so much fun to read. The dialogue was so witty and fresh. Lucy is such a fun lead, but I can’t say there was a character I didn’t think was entertaining. This is not the traditional thriller; as much as I wanted to know what happened to Savannah, I was not in a rush to find out because I really loved reading about everything happening in Plumpton The snarky back and forth between each character was brilliant.

The other great thing about this book is that the author hits the right tones at the right times. There are some funny parts to be sure, but the author doesn’t forget that there was a serious crime being investigated too, and those parts are riveting and intense in the right way. There are enough twists in the story that it’s not easy figuring out who ultimately is guilty of killing Savannah and so the author does the thriller portion of this book justice as well.

It’s been a day since I’ve finished this book, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it. I can only hope they make it a miniseries one day so I can relive the story in a different format, and if they do I will binge watch it all in one day because I really enjoyed this story that much. Until then, I can’t wait to see what Ms. Tintera releases next…

**Thank you so much to NetGalley, Celadon Books and Amy Tintera for an advanced copy of this book for my honest opinion. I had so much fun with this one!**

I couldn't read this book fast enough. If I wasn't working or sleeping, I was reading this book. It's a story that toggles between the present day, a podcast about a past unsolved crime, and finally some flashbacks of the event 5 yeas previous. I found this book to be engaging, addicting, and super fast-paced.

I was lucky enough to get this book in digital and audio format, and while both are great, the audio is extra fun because the podcast sounds like a podcast, with theme music and separate actors for the voices.

THANK YOU NetGalley for early access to this wild ride of a thriller.

If you’re looking for a quick, bingeable, get me out of a reading slump type of book, look no further ! 👏🏽

This book had me by the first page! I loved the MC. She had this dark sarcastic humor about her that made me laugh out loud and instantly connect with her. LISTEN FOE THE LIE was so good and unexpected. When I read the synopsis thar it has another podcast story I was apprehensive. I have read so many like it and thought it was going to feel overdone.

But LISTEN FOR THE LIE was so good and the podcast tied in well. There are so many characters that are shady that it kept you guessing and I did not see that ending coming 👀. Also, I want to be friends with the grandma. 👵🏻

omg. omg. I have been waiting for this gem and I was so excited to get in on Net galley.

This is undeniably one of the best and most riveting novels I have wholeheartedly enjoyed. I eagerly look forward to reading more works by Amy Tintera!

Welcome to Plumpton - where everyone thinks you’re guilty of killing your best friend Savannah- lovingly known as Savvy. . Lucy Chase has stayed as far away from her hometown as she possibly could for the past five years, reluctantly returns to celebrate her grandmother’s 80th birthday. The whole town still thinks she murdered her best friend. A true-crime podcaster, Ben Owens, is hanging around stirring up trouble and trying to finally discover what really happened on that stormy night all those years ago. Trouble is...Lucy can barely remember anything about this horrific night that Savvy was killed. Finding out the truth may be the best or worst thing ever...

This book was a read now for a brief time on Netgalley so I scooped it up. I have been seeing it all over Instagram and I was having FOMO. I also received an audiobook version as well. This is my first experience with Amy Tintera and it won’t be my last.
I thought Listen For The Lie was very well thought and for a brief moment I suspected the murder for who they really were but then I was tricked into thinking others things right until the end. I liked that that book had podcast involved in it and that made the audio book great to listen too. I liked that we had the unreliable narrator and that she didn’t even know what happened again until the very end. I like that kind of suspense.
Character wise… I didn’t like that our main character Lucy basically just rolled over and let whatever happen to her happen. She didn’t even try to help herself, she just ran away. She also has no idea what a healthy relationship looks like. I actually like Ben and Paige and want their backstories. And even Savvy’s story would be interesting to hear. The rest of the characters can kick rocks hahaha. Too many webs of deceit happening everywhere.
Overall I enjoyed this book and I will be reading more by Amy Tintera in the future.
Thanks to Netgalley and Celadon books for the complimentary copy.

*Audiobook Version*
I have listened to other books that have January Lavoy as the narrator and I really enjoy listening to her. I did a quick creep on her and she’s in her 40’s but she has such a soothing and young sounding voice, love it. I like that that Podcast sections have there little intro music. And I love, love, love that each character is voiced by a different narrator (or male by male and female by female).
Thanks to both Netgalley and MacMillan Audio for the complementary copy.

5⭐️

True Crime podcasts are a guilty pleasure of mine and this book gave me the same feel as binging them does. In the small town of Plumpton, TX, the murder of Savvy shook the town. 5 years later, the crime is still unsolved, the victim's best friend, Lucy Chase, still the top suspect comes back into town for her grandmother's birthday and has to face the controversy again. Everyone is convinced Lucy did it - even Lucy herself, despite the fact that she has amnesia and cannot remember the events leading up to and after the murder.

Lucy has a hilarious dry humor of someone jaded by public opinion. It really shows as she goes on and helps Ben Owens, the podcast host, investigate and reopen old memories and wounds regarding this incident.

The mystery, suspense and twists throughout the story was honestly so much fun. Small town gossip was a major part of finding the truth and lining up all of the stories. I loved how the story consistently swapped between Lucy's POV and the podcast as we learn more information and recover more of Lucy's memories.

The audiobook makes this story flourish, I don't know if I would be rating it as high if the audiobook production wasn't absolutely phenomenal. January LaVoy and Will Damron knocked this one out of the park - the narration of this audio was amazing.

If you're a lover of true crime podcasts, mystery, a bit of humor and suspense this book will be for you.

Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera comes out 03/05/2024.

Better as an audiobook
True Crime Podcast
Dual POV (Lucy POV & Podcast POV)
Small town TX
Dry humor
Amnesia
Guessing up until the end!
Mild romance
Undeniable chemistry between podcast host and main character

Thank you to NetGalley, Celadon Books & Macmillan Audio for the ARC & ALC of Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera.

Thank you for the copy of Listen for the Lie. This was a fun one to read. I enjoy books that involve podcasts so this one was great also to have true crime involved. Cant go wrong with a true crime podcast. If you want a good quick mystery thriller this is a good choice.

This podcast thriller made my heart pound. It was fast-paced and exciting and I had a hard time putting it down. The main character Lucy is flawed just like the majority of the characters in the book. I felt myself cheering her on, even though she definitely got herself into some interesting/sketchy situations. A twist on the classic whodunnit, "Listen for the Lie" was a hit. I can't wait to read more by Amy Tintera.

Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera
.
A popular podcast, Listen for the Lie, is set to find out the truth about who murdered a young woman in a small Texas town. We follow Lucy, who was best friends with the deceased. At first she is hesitant to have anything to do with this podcast, but ultimately she wants to get to the bottom of who killed Savvy. Even if it was her.
.
What I liked:
-The dark humor was excellent. 😈😈 I really adored Lucy, she made my little sarcastic heart happy.
-The podcast element was SO much fun to read! Ben is the host of the podcast and I loved trying to figure him out.
-Lucy’s grandma was so spunky and sassy! Honestly, you cannot read this book and NOT love Beverly.
-The ending was really great because I didn’t see it coming!
.
4.5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 This was such a fun mystery/thriller and it was quite bingable! I read it in two days (not consecutively, but two days total 😂). Highly addictive and a definite must to add to your tbr.

So I know the whole podcast thriller is trending but this one blew me away. Absolutely couldn't put it down, entertaining and funny. Lucy was a dark and compelling and flawed character that you can't help but root for. I liked the backdrop and the cast of characters, all complex and interesting, everyone felt fleshed out in a way that kept the story moving forward. Probably my favorite thriller I've read in a long while.
