Lucy is suspected of murdering her friend Savvy but she can’t remember anything from that night. Lucy returns to her hometown where she meets Ben who is hosting a podcast investigating the murder. There are many players involved and you do not know who to trust along the way. I was surprised by the ending! I always enjoy a book with short chapters and the podcast element. I would recommend to anyone looking for a quick fast paced read!
4.5 stars! Full review coming to my Youtube channel soon. I really enjoyed this fast paced thriller! Amy Tintera has a wonderful way of including sarcasm into her dialogue and it made the thriller feel light at times, which I enjoyed. Non-spoiler review- our main character was accused of killing her best friend years ago, and now a podcast is being made to see if she was really the murderer. She denies everything but she also claims that she doesn't remember the night of the murder. Going back to her hometown, she tries to see if memories will come back to her, but while there she is dealing with family and "friends", along with people in her town who never left, and all of their judgement and narratives. It is a quick thriller to read and I loved trying to solve who the murderer was; is it really our main character or someone else?
This is a fast paced read. I couldn’t put it down! The characters are complex and diverse. Tintera does an excellent job developing each character. The plot of the story was very interesting and a unique style whodunit thriller. Doubt is cast upon all of the characters as the Ben investigates the murder of Lucy’s best friend’s death using his podcast. Everyone in the small Texas town believes that Lucy is the murderer, but Lucy doesn’t remember that night. I really liked Lucy. She is snarky and sarcastic. It is her coping mechanism, and it made her so likable for me. I really enjoyed the interactions between Lucy and her Grandma. I really felt the trust and love between them. I also liked seeing how the Lucy and Ben’s relationship grew. She was so cautious with him. And I liked how the ending was left open-but I wouldn’t mind a sequel to let us know what happens in LA!
This was a fun murder mystery! We have our main character who is blamed for murdering her best friend and she honestly does not remember if she did or not. While she has moved on with her life, a podcast is being made about the murder. Told between the current time, 5 years ago, and podcast transcripts this is a fun mystery that kept me guessing.
It even adds in a little romance for those that like a romance to go with their murder.
Mant thanks to @celadonbooks, @macmillanusa, and @netgalley for my #gifted (free) copy, coffee mug, and delicious brownie. Pub date 3/5/24.
This was definitely a very unique wild ride. Trust me, you haven't read one quite like this one! This was a thriller with some dark humor thrown in that made me LOL, especially from the grandma, I loved her! I loved that the author added the podcast to the book. Actually, I just loved everything. There were many characters throughout, so make sure you are paying close attention!
Five years ago, Lucy was accused of murdering her best friend Savvy, but the police didn't have enough evidence to convict her. Lucy couldn't stand living in her hometown in Texas anymore, so she moved to LA to get away from all of it. Fast forward to future time, Lucy's grandma is having her 80th birthday party, and she begs Lucy to come home for it, so she does. True crime podcaster Ben is also in town to investigate the murder that happened 5 years ago, and figure out if Lucy really killed Savvy, and if it wasn't her, then who was it? 4.5 stars!
This book kept me guessing until the last few chapters. I have been looking for a good thriller and this checked all the right boxes for me! I found myself questing everyone and not really knowing which direction it was headed. I loved the snarky MC and seeing her develop throughout the journey. I wish I could go back and read it over for the first time.
Thank you Celadon books and NetGalley for the ARC! Five years ago Lucy was found wondering around the fields bloody and can’t remember anything. Her best friend Savvy is murdered and everyone believes Lucy did it and Lucy can’t deny or confirm this, that entire day is a blank. When Ben comes into her life intent on doing a podcast on the murder, Lucy comes back home and helps Ben find out what happened that night. This book has a great cast of characters especially her feisty grandmother Beverly! I especially liked Lucy’s peppered sarcastic musings to herself that made me really laugh out loud! This book really kept you guessing with many twists along the way! Looking forward to more of her books in the future.
love a podcast themed book so of course I had to read this one. This was definitely a wild ride of a thriller and I flew through it. The short chapters and the little cliff hangers at the end of each chapter really make this book an addictive popcorn thriller. I loved Lucy’s snarky remarks and sarcastic attitude throughout the book. The ending fell a little flat for me and there was a couple parts in the book that I felt didn’t need to happen.
Overall, I really enjoyed this super quick read and recommend it to any thriller lover or someone who loves a podcast element in a story!
Did she or didn’t she kill her best friend? No one knows, not even Lucy, because she can’t remember that fateful night. Listen for the Lie is a murder mystery that will keep the reader on edge until the end.
Lucy struggles every day with the murder of her best friend, Savvy, having moved to LA away from Texas. Everyone thinks she did it because she was there at the murder scene. But she’s back home for her grandma’s birthday to face everyone, even her ex-husband. But it’s a set-up by Granny for Ben Owen’s popular podcast as he follows her to Texas for the big story. And as the podcast reveals, everyone is hiding something about that night.
Listen for the Lie is a gripping mystery with unlikeable characters who know pieces of what happened the night that Savvy died. But it’s up to Lucy to remember, save her reputation, and live her life again. But only her best friend, Savvy, knows the outcome. I loved the podcast format and the voice of Savvy in the background, nagging Lucy through her journey. Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read and review Listen for the Lie. #NetGalley #ListenfortheLie #murdermystery
This book is sooo good. It follows a woman who is accused of murdering her friend but a podcast host goes to her hometown to interview family members and others that knew both women. It kept me in a loop with who actually killed Savvy and had many twists.
This book is vaguely reminiscent of “a good girl’s guide to murder” by holly Jackson and I loved every second of it. The story telling was immaculate and the suspense had me reeling every moment. It was hilarious yet serious at the same time. The plot twist was something I did not see coming so kudos to the author for getting it right. It was fast-paced and did not bore me at all! I had such a good, fun time.
Thank you to NetGalley and Caledon books for generously offering me this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Listen for the Lie by Amy Tintera
Well first off this story took a creepy twist with the main character Lucy walking through the street’s covered in her best friends blood. Her whole town began talking about this horrid accident and assuming she killed her best friend Savvy- Savannah.
Lucy has a voice in her head, the voice of her best friend making her even crazier. This story is definitely a page turner and a hypnotic insane twist of events that you won’t see coming!
Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy!
I’m sorry? Where did this come from?!? I LOVED THIS BOOK. I will shout it to the world. It’s mixed media, with some podcast interviews involved that really added an extra something. And the way that it was written, I don’t know. I felt like I was tuning into the podcast myself, trying to solve the mystery. This book will be out in March, and everyone should plan to read it. Magnificent.
Thanks to Netgalley and Celadon Books for the ARC of this book. It will be an instant but for me
This book is absolutely fantastic and I'm 100% sure I'll be recommending it to every patron, even if they think they don't like thrillers. This book had everything: amazing character development, plot twists that were exciting but weren't so out of left field I didn't believe the story, and even a little spicy romance. LISTEN FOR THE LIE was also unexpectedly hilarious with truly hysterical side characters like Lucy's mom and grandmother. After reading Amy Tintera's YA novels, I was curious about how she'd handle an adult book because that often doesn't translate when YA writers go into other age groups, but this adult debut absolutely smashed it and I really hope Amy keeps writing thrillers for adults because I'll be buying every single one.
Ahhh lord another podcast driven novel I don't hate them but I also don't love them so maybe I sit in the middle of this debate. I liked the writing style of the book and the way the twists were delivered. I think maybe Ive just read too many Podcast originated books lately. I will say I loved the reveal I didn't see it coming and I normally do so it made me so happy. In general this is a really good book the character development is there and I enjoyed that a lot.
I enjoyed this one! Listen For The Lie is a fast-paced, binge-able thriller. Main character Lucy heads back to her small-town childhood home in Texas for her Grandma’s birthday, a place she hasn’t been back to since she started being suspected of her best friend’s murder. At the same time she’s back at her hometown, a true crime podcaster is in town, trying to uncover who is responsible for Lucy’s friend, Savannah’s murder.
Loved the role the podcast had in the story, and how it kept me guessing. I also liked Lucy—she was funny and sarcastic at times, but she also had a strength about her to keep her head held high no matter what others thought. I will say some of the thoughts you read about running through her head are a little unnerving, but still found myself rooting for her. This book does have an amnesia plot in there, but I thought it was done well and liked how the story unraveled. Also appreciated the small GoT and Gilmore Girls references! The one thing I didn’t love was that it felt like literally everyone in this small town setting was cheating on each other.
Overall, I really enjoyed this thriller and would recommend if you’re looking for a solid, binge-able thriller! Thanks to NetGalley and Celadon Books for the advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Should you read this?

HELL YEAH BROTHER
I gave this 5 stars. I see a lot of mixed reviews here and I think it comes down to personal preference. I read this in one sitting. Ate. It. Up. 🍽️
I think the premise may be popular right now, but that being said it was very well done. I was guessing all the way until the end.
Five years ago:
Lucy, our main character, was found wandering the main road of her small hometown..covered in blood, her best friend dead in the woods she wasn’t far from, and no recollection of the nights events.
Present:
Lucy is forcefully invited back to her hometown by her 80 something year old grandmother Beverly who will give you Golden Girls vibes in the best way possible. With a rocky relationship and recently having been fired she has little to no options. There’s only a few problems.
•Everyone in town is convinced she’s the murderer including her own parents.
•Ben Owens, an up and coming true crime podcaster, is doing a whole season on her case.
•And the small town she came from has gossip and secrets spilling during each episode.
Will Ben prove her innocence? Or will he help solidify that she is guilty?
Lucy is arrogant and strong willed (and may be hearing her dead best friends voice nbd)
Ben is smug and handsome 😏
Beverly (our gmom) is hilarious and quirky
Her ex husband is suspicious
Her childhood friends have secrets
There’s multiple cheating scandles
Everyone is keeping secrets
So…who killed Savvy?
Thank you to Amy Tintera, Celadon Books and NetGalley for the ARC🐙
O.M.G. I am obsessed with this story. The main character Lucy has the most hilarious dry sense of humor. I can’t remember the last time I related to a character this much. She made me laugh out loud throughout the entire book, and also made me want to cry. The ending really was a gut punch. I cannot wait to see what this author comes up with next!
4.5 snarky stars
Lucy’s best friend Savannah died five years ago, and no one knows what really happened. Lucy was there (found covered in blood) and considered a suspect, but she was never arrested. She can’t remember that night, probably because she was discovered with a traumatic brain injury. Or does she remember? Everyone in her small Texas town thinks she’s guilty.
Now hot podcaster Ben is on the cold case, determined to find out what really happened. Lucy won’t talk to him, and she’s never told her side of the story to anyone. Sometimes, even Lucy wonders if she was responsible for Savvy’s death.
Lured back to the small town from LA for her grandmother’s birthday (by the way, her grandma was a fantastic character, and I laughed out loud with her several times), Lucy is drawn right back into the small-town drama.
This town seems to have more than its share of infidelity, drinking, and lying. Lucy’s snark and directness were pure dark comedy at several moments in the book.
This one kept me guessing, and I did not predict the ending. I loved the excerpts from the podcast that popped in, and we learned more details through them.
I can’t wait to see what this author writes next!
I really enjoyed this book. It has humor, suspense, drama, and great characters.
Lucy has been living with the trauma of believing she killed her best friend, parents who really don’t believe her and avoid the topic, and a kick-ass Grandma who is her biggest fan. Throw in a couple men in her life including a podcaster trying to solve the mystery of who really killed Savannah. This book has it all and is a really fun ride.
Thank you to NetGalley, Celadon books, and the author for gifting me the ARC. I look forward to more from this author.
