When I first saw this book, I thought it looked appealing, so when I received a copy from Netgalley, I thought I'd give it a try. But, after I got a few pages in, I realized that this book just isn't for me. I've realized that I'm not much of a fan of horror and books that feature Indian mythology. Plus, the formatting of this e-arc is a little too wonky for me. So, at this time I'll have to leave this book unfinished. But when this book comes out in June, I'd definitely recommend this book if you're one for horror, books that feature Indian mythology, or are a fan of the book Frankenstein.

Really neat and unique concept, first time for me reading a book based on Indian mythology. And a Frankenstein retelling to boot!

I do think the writing could have used some polish, with some added character development and world building helping even more. But the bones are all there (hehe).

Kajal emerges as a protagonist as flawed as she is compelling. Driven by guilt and desperation, she gambles with life and death, resurrecting a spirit who turns out to be not who she expected. This twist throws her into a thrilling quest for redemption, where she must confront her mistakes, hone her scientific mind against the bite of blades, and unravel a web of political intrigue.

A Haunting Premise: The novel explores the consequences of defying the natural order, with Lasya's corrupted soul hanging over Kajal as a chilling reminder. The threat of the bhuta adds a layer of suspense, constantly pushing the narrative forward.

Unlikely Heroes: Kajal's prickly pragmatism clashes beautifully with Tav's impulsive bravado, creating a dynamic duo that is both entertaining and unpredictable. Their journey forces them to confront their own limitations and grow from each other's strengths.

Beyond the Battlefield: While "We Shall Be Monsters" offers thrilling action sequences, it also delves into themes of grief, sacrifice, and the burden of power. Kajal's scientific approach to magic throws up intriguing questions about the nature of life and death, adding depth to the story.

A Few Shadows: The fast pace occasionally sacrifices some character development, leaving some supporting players feeling slightly underdeveloped. The world-building, while intriguing, could benefit from a touch more detail.

Verdict: "We Shall Be Monsters" is a gripping fantasy adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat. With its intriguing premise, complex characters, and a blend of action and introspection, it's a must-read for fans of dark fantasy and unlikely heroes. Just be prepared for some chills and a healthy dose of self-reflection along the way.

This book was so cool. There is a dog companion, identity reveals, a non-binary character, and Indian mythology. Sets up well for a sequel/series too. I normally spoil in a book that has a dog if the dog lives to the end, but it's an undead dog brought back from the start so if you like dogs I think you'll like that aspect in the book

It's fitting that my last read of 2023 is absolutely brilliant.

A Frankenstein retelling inspired by Indian mythology, it's so beautifully haunting. sorrow and rage take the form of a girl desperate to save her sister, and it's wrapped all together with an undead dog friend!

Very disappointing. The writing style felt clunky and the plot/characters very surface level. I felt there was so much potential to explore some compelling themes here but none of the promise was followed through. Interesting premise though!

I loved the story, the world building and meeting the different characters. I felt completely immersed in the story and couldn't stop reading it.

I was such a fan of the Timekeeper and Scavenge the Stars series, so when I found out she was coming out with another one that was inspired by Indian mythology with FRANKENSTEIN I have never been more sold on anything in my life. i was truly obsessed with the spirits, the revenge vibes, and of course, the Frankenweenie/Zero style dog. Could you ask for anything more in a book? I don't want to give away too much but I must tell you that you absolutely cannot and should not skip this book. Magic, mythology, horror, gothic vibes, and even romance come together in this stunning book- I need the next one ASAP!
