Dark Shadows over Coronation Close is the third book in this wonderful historical saga series written by one of my favourite authors of this genre, Lizzie Lane.
Once I had finished the first chapter I just felt like I was back amongst friends as it is just so easy to settle back into the lives of the neighbours of Coronation Close.
There are definitely dark shadows looming in both personal lives of the residents and also the threat of war is very serious and is causing a lot of worry for everyone.
One of the many reasons I love this series is the way the author develops the characters, they are strong and feisty women who work hard and will do everything for their families. From start to finish this is a wonderful read which is at times filled with drama and also with love and courage.
Dark Shadows over Coronation Close is the latest dramatic wartime saga from much-loved author Lizzie Lane.
Jenny Crawford is troubled by the shadowy presence of a stranger who hovers over Coronation Close with his attention firmly fixed on Thelma Dawson’s house. When challenged, the stranger beats a hasty retreat, but Jenny cannot help but feel uneasy and unsettled. What is this man doing in the Close? What are his intentions? And what does he want with Thelma?
Thelma has her own problems to contend with. Her precocious daughter Mary is growing up and about to leave school and insists that she’s treated like an adult – even though to her mother she will always be her little girl. The two of them are constantly clashing and butting heads, but unbeknownst to her mother, Mary has started a relationship with a much-older man who treats her like the adult she wants to be.
Life is never dull or boring at Coronation Close and with the gathering clouds of war approaching, Jenny and Thelma will need to rely on one another like never before.
Lizzie Lane’s sagas are perfect for reading while curled up on a comfy chair with a great big pot of tea. Dark Shadows over Coronation Close is another captivating saga full of laughter, tears and pathos packed with characters that just bounce off the pages and straight for the reader’s heart.
A wonderfully told page-turner from a terrific storyteller, Dark Shadows over Coronation Close by Lizzie Lane will go down a treat with saga fans everywhere.
Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
I enjoyed reading this book.
We meet up with the characters that live in Coronation Close. World War 2 is now imminent and the story highlights what life was like for the women during that time.
The story covered some hard issues, and moments that make you happy and sad.
The story was well written and I can’t wait to read what happens next.
I recommend this book.
I love this series, feels like sitting with old friends, such wonderful characters. In the brink of war the woman of Coronation Close still come together whatever gets thrown at them. A fantastic read.
I needed something gentle to read and this fitted the bill. Interesting storyline and great characters. My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
I was real excited to read this. I read a previous book of this series and I loved it.
There are some real serious topics dealt between the pages of the book. But Lizzie Lane has a special writing talent that accomplishs this task in a tasteful way.
Jenny, Thelma and all the neighbors of Coronation Close are doing their best to live week by week. I really love both Jenny and Thelma. They are so different but are the best of friends. I don't always agree with their decisions. And I find myself wanting to shout "No, don't". But they can't hear me.
I hope there will be more to come.
Not my cup of tea but my mum liked it, though thought it unresolved at the end. Not my cup of tea but my mum liked it,
This is the third book in this series and it is as good as the other two. This is set in 1938 so just pre-war and it comes with the lives of those who live in this area. Great work by Lizzie Lane and well worth a read. 5 stars
Thanks to Netgalley, author and publisher for this ARC
This, the third book in the Coronation Close series, was brilliant, It continued the story of the residents of Coronation Close as World War 2 is approaching and is a brilliant insight to how life was for women in that period.
The story had drama, romance and a few moments to make you smile.
Lizzie Lane certainly knows her history as far as I can make out!
I can't wait for the next book in the series! If you haven't read the other books in the series, I recommend that you do, just because you'll get a better knowledge of the characters involved, but you could just as easily enjoy this book without any prior knowledge!
It's like settling in with an old friend reading this book, the third installment of The Coronation Close series. We're back with Jenny, Thelma and all the neighbours for the ups and downs that constitute life in the 1930s in England.
At the end of the first chapter Jenny has a huge bombshell dropped on her and doesn't know what life is going to be like in the future. There's a stranger hanging around the Close and Thelma's life is in turmoil when all is revealed. Thelma's girls are growing up and Mary is proving to be a right handful.
Jenny has to give up her job in Robin's shop when his wife, Doris, sweeps back into his life again and causes trouble as usual.
There's drama in the Close when the family at number 5 do a runner and leave a big 'surprise' behind. The new family that move in are not going to be popular I think, even though they're a lot better than the one that left.
I absolutely love this series!!! Thelma is still my favourite, she's a strong, resilient character and
totally likable. She's also a very good friend to Jenny.
I wish the next in the series was already out because I would dive right in. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good saga about ordinary everyday people.
A big thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for an early copy of this book to read.
Hae read all the books in the Coronation Close series and thoroughly enjoyed each one. This last book was definitely no exception. Love all the characters and certainly understood and empathised with many of their troubles.
Looking forward to another in this series, hopefully.
Many thanx to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for allowing me the chance to read and review this book
Thank you for the chance to read this ARC in return for my honest opinion
I have read the other two books in the series - and looked forward to meeting the characters and finding out more about some previously mentioned in the previous books.
As with all saga series there are characters that you love and those that you despair of. Some were thoroughly unlikeable and seemed without redemption.
I am unsure if this is the last in the series but it would be great to extend the story to Jenny and Robin I think
I found that were repetitions of some paragraphs which I felt should have showed up in the proofreading. It didn't really distract from the story just a feeling of having only just read a phrase or so.
As always the books are well researched and easy to read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would read more by the author if this is the last of the series. It would make sense with the advent of Council housing in Bristol between the Wars - the advent of WW2 would make a natural break/end.
Thank you again
I was delighted to get an arc of this wonderful book, having read the precious two novels I was hooked. Reading about the residents of Coronation Close is like catching up with old friends.
It’s 1938 in Bristol and it’s looking like there might be another war on the horizon, but, for Jenny Crawford and her friend Thelma it’s the problems that are closer to home that are more worrying.
Dark Shadows brings us into the heart of Britain at a time when for an awful lot of people money was tight and people really had to make do and mend. The cast of characters in this book is wonderful. It is evocative of a time long gone but wonderfully transcribed here. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series. I would give this book 5⭐️ and would encourage anyone who has an interest in historical fiction to read this, indeed you don’t need to be a big historical fan to enjoy this just a lover of a good story.
Many thanks to #BoldwoodBooks and #NetGalley for this book.
This author has a real talent to take the reader into the pre-war years in Bristol and paint such a clear picture that we can imagine the lives she is portraying. Jenny and Thelma are neighbours, both with young girls and no visible husband. Both have gentleman friends who would like to be more involved in their lives but there are complications - in Jenny's case, her husband left her for the army. So she earns her living working in a pawnshop. The owner is her beau, but he too has a spouse and a particularly vindictive one at that.
War is brewing and the ladies of the Close are afraid of what might happen to their loved ones it if arrives. Thelma's daughter Mary is ready to leave school and feels herself very grown up with a secret gypsy boyfriend and potential older admirer. But there is much more behind the older man's preoccupation with the young girl than she realises. The book is rife with the values of the day, the gossip and the fear of what the neighbours might think.
The story is told really well, it draws you in and you care for the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for allowing me access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is the 3rd book in Lizzie Lanes series about Coronation Close. The year is 1938 and there is talk of another war happening.Jenny and Trisha still live there and Jenny is expecting her husband home from the Far East I'll with malaria. Mary Trisha's daughter is troubled and everybody is wrong as far as she is concerned.I really loved this book and couldn't put it down.Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood books.
Book three in the Coronation Close Saga and it’s now 1938 in Bristol and rumours of another world war are circulating. I definitely recommend reading the series in order although you could read it as a stand-alone. Having lived in Bristol for most of my life, albeit the other side of Bristol, I really enjoy the local historical facts, some of them are fascinating and it’s clear the author has done extensive research, alongside her personal knowledge. It’s very well written and a great plot as we are back with Jenny and Thelma.
Briefly, Jenny is still working in the pawn shop with Robin but when his estranged wife Doris moves back in and Jenny hears that her husband Roy is coming home she has no alternative but to leave her job. Meanwhile Thelma’s eldest daughter Mary is a cause for concern, firstly meeting up regularly with a traveller and then, when he moves on, she is spotted with an older man.
Outside my normal genres but I am absolutely loving this series. It’s a very compelling read. A good saga spanning a number of eras and including a lot of socioeconomic details that show how people lived during this period. A very enjoyable and entertaining read, bring on book 4, I’ll be there!
I am really enjoying this series by Lizzie Lane i have read them from book 1 , few twists and surprises in this one and i red in a few days.
Loved this Lizzie Lane book it’s full of great characters and a very interesting and absorbing tale really enjoyed and would highly recommend.
1938 Bristol, everyone has a past but do they have a future.
With the mention of war looming again, Jenny Crawford just didn't want to know, Coronation Close will always be home, she was happy working part time in the pawn and second hand shop and looking after her two girls, then a postcard changes everything those dreaded words, Jenny I am coming home Roy she had to tell Thelma she knew she could count on her, but a stranger is seen watching Thelma's house, who is it and what does he want.
Dark Shadows is such a enjoyable read I am loving all these books in this series, they certainly keep you entertained with plenty of day to day goings on from the characters, you feel like you are part of it all.
Superb story from this author.
Another great saga. I enjoyed it very much. Heartwarming story. People must read this 5*****. A brilliant author
