Akil Freeman lives in New Brunswick, NJ. One day while playing, he came across the Lost Souls monument. He later asked his grandfather about it, and was told that this monument honored the 137 free African American men, women and children who were kidnapped from New Brunswick and sold into slavery in in New Orleans, Louisiana. The grandfather also proceeded to tell Akil and Maya about how their family came to be in the town of New Brunswick. They went on to study about Juneteenth and the Historical Black Colleges and Universities, which they later shared with their classmates.

It’s refreshing to read a story about a young persons inquisitive mind in action! In Akil Learns of His Hidden History, Michael Roach takes us on a discovery of history through young Akil’s perspective. If you’ve ever been around a young person you know the questions that can spill out of their mouths. Akil is one of those youth that is so intrigued by things he sees and stories he’s heard, he has to get his questions answered. Luckily, Akil had a host of historians in his family and community to answer them! Michael makes this story so realistic that you can visually see Akil navigate through his questions and working with his sister on gathering all the information they can.

Despite my beloved NC A&T State University not having a place in the illustration, ha, I especially love the excitement Akil’s sister, Mya, has learning about HBCU’s.

There are so many conversation starters in Akil’s story. This book is a great example of taking charge of our history and sharing it, in hopes that stories will continue to flow through future generations. It is a book that can spark a change on the hesitation for true history to be told.
