i liked this book but guessed who the baddie was quire early. i prefer a shock, it was an easy read for when i was tired
I have a little confession to make- yes yet another one. Although I have all of Candy's books, I have only read a couple of them.......until now that is. When I was offered the chance to take part in the blog tour for 'Bones Of Contention', I realised that I wouldn't get a better opportunity to reacquaint myself with Candy's work and at the same time reduce my ever increasing 'to be read' mountain. I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Bones Of Contention' but more about that in a bit.
As soon as I started reading, I knew that I wouldn't be putting the book down any time soon. My copy of the book wasn't exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I couldn't bear to miss a single second of the story. Part of the reason why i enjoyed the book so much has to do with the main character of Doctor Callie Hughes, who is a GP and she is also a police surgeon. I grew to like her so much that it was almost as if she had become a friend of mine and I felt all protective of her - particularly when strange incidents occur, which unsettle Callie. This was one of those books that proved to be rather addictive and stayed with me whether I had the book in my hand or not- if I wasn't reading the book then I was thinking about it. I developed my own theories as to what was going to happen so I had to keep reading to see if I was on the right track or if I had wandered off in the opposite direction. I was so wrapped up in the story and in the lives of the different characters that I didn't realise just how quickly time was passing and how quickly I was getting through the book. All too quickly I reached the end of 'Bones Of Contention' and had to say goodbye to Callie. I found 'Bones Of Contention' to be a gripping, tense and dramatic read, which certainly kept me guessing and kept me on the edge of my seat.
'Bones Of Contention' is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Candy Denman. Candy certainly knows how to grab the reader's attention and draw them into what proves to be one hell of a story and then some. For me, the story hit the ground running and maintained a steady pace throughout. Candy clearly cares about her characters and this shines through in the very vivid and realistic way in which she describes them. Candy makes her characters seem just as real as you and I. As I mention earlier, Callie ended up feeling more like a friend rather than a character in a story. Reading 'Bones Of Contention' felt like being on an at times rather scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way. I love the way in which Candy makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action. That's how I felt anyway.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Bones Of Contention' and I would recommend it to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Candy's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
Being a doctor, having a love life and getting into a mystery are at the heart of this book. It is written in English that is understood by those in England. There were many references to items that only made sense if you knew, for example, that biscuits were cookies in America English. Then there was the fact that as a doctor, Callie was very undecided. Her boyfriend moved to Ireland while she stayed in England. She couldn't make up her mind if she wanted to move or stay. Hopefully, in her medical practice she was better able to make decisions. Bones are found in the garden (backyard for us Americans) of one of Callie's patients. DI Steve Miller is trying to figure our who they are and at the same time capture whoever is stalking Callie. Between all these plots, it is not easy to keep who is who straight. It was also a slow read as nothing captured my attention to continue reading. I did finish the book but it wasn't one of my favorite reads.
This was a good story which kept me turning the pages throughout the night. Great mystery, writing and plotting will recommend to all my friends who love this genre.
I wasn't sure what a police doctor does, except for assisting in rape investigations, so I was intrigued to find out more with this, my first book in the Dr Callie Hughes series. The book starts with Callie inspecting bones which have been unearthed in a garden by builders. She has to assess if they are very old. She doesn't think they are, and police must now deal with a potential murder investigation until more forensic evidence is uncovered.
Callie is a fully rounded character, living in a different part of the UK than her boyfriend and wondering if she should uproot herself to join him. I felt concerned for her when she started to be singled out by someone with a grudge. Her friends were very supportive but I was alarmed she didn't get much help from the police, until matters escalated.
I was wondering what Callie's trope or quirk is. Every detective, doctor or pathologist in a novel has one. It was revealed as her determination to follow up on leads and clues, most of which should have been police work. It transpired she is impulsive and often does this.
The book tied up the loose ends around the criminal matters but ended on a cliffhanger around Callie's personal life. A suitable incentive to encourage me to read the next instalment!
I enjoyed reading this book. Even though it is seventh in a series it is a standalone story. Once I got into the story I had to finish it. I will look into other books by this author.
I received this book from NetGalley.
