Perfect summer beach reading magic! And was completely enchanted by the twinkling stars at each chapter heading, nice touch! I am, primarily, a thriller reader but secretly WANT to love all romcoms. Sadly, I am more often than not left feeling disappointed for a variety of reasons; the cheese factor, too heavy on the heavy, too obvious of a plot line, etc. But this one BLEW ME AWAY! The writing is top notch as the writer starts off with funny and interesting characters that are instantly likeable, loveable or hard to love but we love them anyway. The story line is simple but highly effective. Has it been done before? Probably! But when a story is written well it does not matter as long as it holds my attention from beginning to end. I was charmed, entertained and properly whisked away to another world, able to escape real world problems. I loved this book, it was really special, and look forward to the next book this author writes! Thank you Netgalley, Atria Books and the author for this eARC in exchange for my honest review. This book will be available for purchase on June 25, 2024
"I've never made plans with anyone before," Theo says softly, "but you make me want to buy a five-year-diary just so I can write your name on every page."
Okay, this was a fun premise! Daughter of a rock star ends up at a secluded cabin with a current rock star to "babysit" him in order to get him to finish his latest album. But she's sworn off dating rock stars since her dad has always been a d-bag and she was burned by one at age 17. So, this gig shouldn't be a problem, right? I really liked Clementine as a character, and especially enjoyed her 2 sisters as side characters. This was light and fun and would make a great addition to your summer tbr!

Clemmie Monroe’s life is falling apart. Her boyfriend left her for another woman, she’s losing her job as a professor at the end of the semester, she can’t afford to make her rent payment by herself, and her non-relationship with her rock star father is always on her mind. Determined to help her turn her life around, Clemmie’s two sisters cast a hex on her exs and ask for three wishes: hot sex, soul mate love, and a job she loves. But it seems the spell is worker more for her sisters than herself. Desperate, she agrees to take a job babysitting a famous rock star, Theo Elliot, for 6 weeks to make sure he finally delivers a new album. Leary of anything rock star related due to her father, she is adamant that nothing can happen with Theo. But the more time they spend together, the more Clemmie becomes intwined with his life she can’t help but feel maybe this is the magic she was looking for.
This was a cute, fun read with some classic tropes: forced proximity, forbidden love, very black cat and golden retriever boy friend vibes. It always drives me a *little* nuts when the female lead is like “he couldn’t possibly like me” when the guy is basically drooling anytime he see her, but otherwise I liked both characters. It had a hint of spice, but it’s mostly a closed door romance.
Under Your Spell is a delightful romantic comedy that follows Clemmie, the daughter of a famous rockstar, who decides to distance herself from the music world. However, her resolve is tested when she becomes the caretaker of rockstar Theo Elliot.
I found this book incredibly addictive and finished it in just a few days. While rom coms can sometimes feel predictable, this one had some refreshing twists. The characters, especially Clemmie, were well-developed, and I could empathize with her struggles. I also appreciated the inclusion of body positivity themes. Theo, the love interest, was charming and had excellent communication skills, which was a plus. But the highlight for me was the relationship between Clemmie and her sisters, Lil and Serena. Their bond felt genuine and added a lot of humor to the story.
Laura Wood's writing is skillful, and she created characters that I became deeply invested in. If you're in the mood for a heartwarming read with a touch of magic, then this book is perfect for you! I'm crossing my fingers for follow-up stories featuring Lil and Serena.
I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Many thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books!
I really enjoyed this book. Clementine was such a fun main character, and there's such a sweet dynamic between the sisters. I thought it was so clever to have a degree of separation between the sisters (same father, three different mothers). While I enjoyed the writing style, I feel like it read a little more YA than adult romance.
Under Your Spell is a cute and fun story centering around Clemmie and her sisters who “cast a spell” to bring love into their lives after a stream of unfortunate relationships and a very rocky one with their rock star father.
I really enjoyed and related to Clemmie’s anxiousness around her dad and the way it has colored her outlook on relationships. Theo is a perfect example of a leading man and the “men written by a woman” we are all seeking. Their relationship was real and sweet, but the star of this book is the beautiful relationship between the sisters ❤️
Reading this also came at the perfect time to coincide with the release of The Tortured Poets Department and I couldn’t help but see the similarities in the storyline. Clemmie and Theo deal with the paps/media and it is really devastating to their daily lives. I can’t imagine what someone like Taylor Swift has had to deal with and this book highlights a lot of those struggles of being in the public eye. 🫶🏻
Overall, a great rom-com that I will be recommending!
I absolutely loved this book. The relationships were well developed, the conflicts made sense and unfolded naturally, and the writing made me feel like I was fully immersed in the world of these characters. Yes it was a romance, but it was more than that. I loved Theo and Clementine and I feel like they are going to live in my mind for awhile.
Clemmie has decided to keep her life out of the spotlight. She grew up with a famous rock musician father, whom she has a very strained relationship. Clemmie has 2 sisters, Serena and Lil, they all grew up together after their mothers formed a bond over Ripp, the rock star dad's affairs.
Clemmie faces a break up with her now ex boyfriend, Len. She must leave their flat and find somewhere else to go. She's jobless and now homeless. Clemmie is now faced with returning home for her uncle's funeral. Her sisters join her back at home to pay their respects and they decide to do something they haven't done in years. They perform a spell to curse their exes and wish happiness to their future relationships.
At the funeral, Clemmie retreats to her old bedroom to escape the chaos. She finds Edward sitting in her old bedroom for the same reasons. They decide to leave and Clemmie has her first one night stand with Edward. She panics and leaves the next morning.
Clemmie needs to make money and fast. Serena says she has the perfect job for her. Clemmie doesn't like music and is not easily influenced or starstruck by famous artists, so chances are she won't know Serena's client. Serenas client needs to write his next album...and fast. Serena meets Clemmie at a bar to introduce her to Theo, the newest sensation. Clemmie realizes she knows Theo...and they've met.
Clemmie agrees to babysit Theo. At first it presents as challenging. She thinks she is not cut out for babysitting rockstars and living in solitude while she waits of him to write his album.
The chemistry between Clemmie and Theo was so good! A few moments of just hurry up and tell each other!! Overall I enjoyed the characters and I also loved the relationship between Clemmie, Serena and Lil. The banter between Clemmie and Theo was humorous and entertaining. I absolutely loved this story. I would highly recommend reading this one at release day! Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for this eARC!
Such a sweet, fun rom-com! Really enjoyed the main characters and fell in love with the leading man. A great read for sure and definitely recommend everyone dive into the Clemmie & Theo love story. The depth of characters and relationships made this book even more enjoyable.
This was such a cute read. I really enjoyed this and had such a great time reading it. I really enjoyed Clementine and Theos story. Their story was so all consuming that I couldn't stop reading it. This was a 5 star read for me.
I just reviewed Under Your Spell by Laura Wood. #NetGalley

This was a warm bubble bath of a novel. I loved Clemmie and Theo; their banter was cute but not overly sentimental or cutesy. The stakes for Clemmie (while living in a rarefied world of professional musicians) felt realistic and gave her character depth. A great read.
The overall premise of this book started off very interesting—complex family dynamics, finding-herself heroine, and interesting side characters—however, as the story progressed, it just felt like there were a lot of tropes trying to fit into the plot line at once. I felt it was a bit disorganised story-arc-wise and felt more chemistry between the sisters than the MMC.
I am so surprised by how much I ended up loving this romance! I am a sucker for a romance (or any fiction book really) following famous people. We follow Clementine or Clemmie, who is one of the daughters of an aging rock star who has sworn she would never fall for another musician again after having her heart broken years ago but ends up finding herself drawn to one of the hottest musicians in the world.
While I did love the progression of the romance between Clemmie and Theo, I especially loved the sister relationship between Clemmie, Lil, and Serena. They all had each other's back no matter what and each sister felt separate in their own way and as a fully fleshed out character. The humor in this story was also TOP TIER and found myself giggling at multiple points in the story.
I look forward to getting my hands on a physical copy once the book is published to add to my shelves!
Thanks to Atria Books and NetGalley for this eARC!
I loved this!! I think the setup (3 sisters who are all the child of a rockstar born within a few months of each other and grew up together) is very fun, the English setting was dreamy, the dude was just this side of too perfect, and I had some genuine laughs. I'd call this one a real romcom (though the back half is more angsty than the first half, of course). I'm so glad I wasn't deterred by the generic title and randomly NetGalleyed this one! If you're a romcom person, check it out in June (fans of Beth O'Leary, I think you'll get into this)! I'm excited to dip into some of Laura Wood's backlist, though this seems to be her first adult title. Also, someone PLEASE adapt this for the screen. Honestly, we concentrate on the middle sister, Clementine, but I think you could make this into a series where we see the relationships of each sister, and HONESTLY, the moms too. I have the vision. Call me, Hollywood.
I love this author’s YA historical romances, so reading an adult romance from her was so much fun— and even better than I could have anticipated. I love how a one-night-stand can turn into more, and this did not disappoint! Clemmie just went through a breakup and she meets Theo… who happens to be a rock star (and Clemmie is the daughter of one). I loved her relationship with her sisters, and how sweet Theo is! There was so much to love in this sweet rom-com — I could go for more in a series. The setting was also fun, in the English countryside, which I don’t read about enough. I give this all of the stars all around, for humor, love, and simply great writing.
I love a book with a musician! This one is precious. It is laugh out loud funny, has a swoon worthy main character in Theo and readers everywhere will adore Clemmie. I loved everything about it!
Under Your Spell started out so fun and had me hooked, but as the story progressed fell a bit flat and couldn't really keep me interested
Thank you Atria Books and NetGalley for the ARC for my honest review.
Unfortunately, I was not under the spell on this one. Maybe it's because it contained my least favorite tropes (rock star, hookup in the beginning, magic spells). I just did not feel swoons at all on this one, there was way too much banter between the sisters compared to the love interest. It just felt messy and disjointed.
Clemmie, the daughter of a famous rock star who is also a terrible dad, has just been dumped and lost her job in the span of days. After a chance encounter with a handsome stranger at a funeral turns into a very out-of-character but incredible one night stand, Clemmie discovers that this man of her dreams, Theo, is actually a famous musician - which is a huge problem, since she's adamantly sworn off musicians. Desperate for both a job and space to figure out her next career move, she ends up babysitting this hot musician while he writes his next album, and the two of them end up spending a lot of time together...
I have no complaints about this book - in fact, I really, really loved it. All of the characters - the main couple, as well as Clemmie's two sisters - were compelling, well-developed, and had tons of entertaining interactions with each other. The banter was top notch, and the sexual and romantic tension between Theo and Clemmie built up in a very satisfying way. I would highly recommend this book for fans of any kind of contemporary romance, but especially the music nerds out there. Also, Theo's background/entire vibe was very Harry Styles - and who doesn't love him??
I really enjoyed this book, and it is hard to pinpoint exactly what I loved. I enjoyed Clemmie's relationship with her sisters. Theo was a great character and his relationship with his family made so much sense. I almost wish that Ripp had gotten his chance at redemption with Clemmie, but their relationship was so much more realistic because of how it played out. A great romance novel for those looking for all the love and heartbreak that comes with it.
