In "Hard Power: A Jon Reznick Thriller, Band 12," author J. B. Turner takes us on another exhilarating ride with the enigmatic Jon Reznick. As the 12th installment in the series, this gripping thriller continues to captivate readers with its fast-paced action, intricate plot, and compelling characters. The novel delves into the world of covert operations, political intrigue, and high-stakes espionage, keeping readers on the edge of their seats from start to finish.
I initially wasn't sure if I would like this book but I came around. I have read most of this series and they are all good. This one Jon Reznick is called down to NY to help a friend support someone who lost their sister and his friend Trevelle who lost a girlfriend to mysterious circumstances. It started a little far fetched but the action and the involvement of the Chinese and their attempt to silence any dissidents carried the day. Reznick's conscience is something you can always count on and his desire to right the wrongs made this a good book.
Wow!!! I started this book earlier and didn't stop until I'd finished it, totally action packed from start to finish.
I love all these books Jon is a great character and always seems to find trouble! The signs of a new romance for him was a nice touch he deserves it.
Each book just gets better and better!
Maybe a spin off book on Lauren would be great
This is the second Reznick book that I have read and enjoyed it even more than the previous one now I know some of the characters. Reznick's friend Trevelle asks him for help when his Chinese friend Kevin is threatened by Chinese agents, which results in the usual extreme response from Reznick. Fast moving plot with lots of contemporary international politics. The personal lives of the main characters move along with some welcome new additions. Highly recommended.
"Hard Power" by J. B. Turner, the twelfth installment in the Jon Reznick series, is a high-octane thriller that had me hooked from the first page. When Trevelle's partner, Amy Chang, is found dead on a Manhattan subway, the circumstances scream foul play, setting off a chain reaction of political intrigue and danger. Turner weaves a complex web of corruption involving the Chinese government, the FBI, and a former NSA hacker.
The plot is suspenseful and fast-paced, with Reznick facing not only external threats but also the unsettling discovery of corruption within the ranks of those meant to protect. The dynamics between characters, particularly Reznick and Martha Meyerstein, add depth and emotion to the narrative. As Reznick races against time, the story unfolds with gripping intensity, keeping me on the edge of my seat.
“Hard Power" is a great addition to the series, delivering the relentless action and intrigue that fans have come to expect from Turner's masterful storytelling.
Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy through NetGalley, opinions are my own
J.B. Turner's Hard Power (Thomas & Mercer 2024), twelfth in the Jon Reznick Thriller series, had a lot of potential. The Chinese national sister of a friend of Reznick's, himself a former NSA hacker, is murdered on the NY subway, but no one believes it wasn't an accident except her brother and her boyfriend, Trevelle. She had been worried about being stalked and threatened with her life for leaving China. When she dies, Trevelle calls Reznick for help and it doesn't take long for things to escalate. Soon, Chinese bad guys threaten to kill the brother which Reznick solves by killing them. The FBI doesn't believe it is self-defense and wants Reznick to turn himself in while they investigate. The problem is, the more Reznick digs into this murder, the more DC and FBI corruption he finds, as well as unchecked Chinese law-breaking that even Reznick's sometimes girlfriend, Martha Meyerstein, in the FBI seems unwilling to believe.
I wanted to love this book as I have all the others in the series. I wanted to see Reznick and his cadre of talented cohorts deal with the treachery that threatened to sink justice. At times, the story was clever, but often it got stuck in backstory and emotion. The plot seemed to become as much about saving Martha’s career and analyzing her relationship with Reznick as saving America. This was a serious change of attitude for Martha, an FBI character I have liked in the past. I began to wonder if the author was running out of ideas for the fast moving pieces that in the past, always made this book difficult to put down. There were a lot of places in the story where motivations were rehashed and ideas repeated which bled the energy out of the story. It seemed to stall often where it never did in earlier books.
Overall, I'll read the next because I remember the good books, but I hope the fast-paced indominable Reznick returns for the next in the series.
Fabulous!! I love everything about this novel, and everything that JB Turner writes. Cannot wait for the next book!!
I received an ARC through "NetGalley" and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
In this latest book, Jon is leaving his daughter at the airport as she starts her new CIA assignment in Jakarta. Once Jon is home, he receives a call from his friend Travelle who wants his help. He returns to NYC and learns that Travelle's girlfriend has been killed. He wants Jon to help Amy's brother. Once he learns more, they go to Kevin's apartment where they discover that someone is holding a gun on Kevin and Jon winds up killing the person. Jon discovers that there are others waiting and winds up shooting them. Unfortunately, all of the victims are part of the Chinese delegation and Jon and the other two are now wanted.
Follow the story aas Jom tries to avoid being captured and learn who assists him along the way. Find out what happened and how Jon handles the events that arose during the chase and his apprehension. Discover why and what happens in the end that pertains to Amy and Kevin and how everything works out in the end. You won't want to miss this one.
Reznick went to see and help his daughter get off in her new adventure and wasn't expecting what came next. Just when things seem to slow down a little Travelle calls and need a serious favor. Things are changing could this be the end of an era?
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Hard power may be the scariest novel I have read this year! Author J.B. Turner details the efforts of China to both infiltrate US institutions to steal knowledge as well as set up dozens of local Chinese police stations- in America! Meanwhile, our government is happy with the money they send and seemingly steps behind them. Enter Jon Reznick to try to right the wrongs. Hard Power is a thriller by all definitions!
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC.
Excellent addition to an addictive series. Jon Reznick plays by his own rules: right is right; wrong is wrong; shoot first, and get names later. In this episode, he starts off protecting a Chinese dissident, and ends up uncovering and disposing of various assets unfriendly to the United States. Along the way, he alienates many while burning some important bridges.
Like all the books by this author this was a terrific page turner and I could not put it down until I had finished. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for giving me a copy of the book. Highly recommended.
