Noooooo….I need more!
Incredible extract!
Never have I finished a first chapter so ready for more than this one right here. And typically, it’s an extract. There isn’t more…yet!
I have so many questions, I need answers.
Send help (and more chapters)…
With a gossipy acerbic tone, this felt so reminiscent of the classic movie and book The First Wives Club that I immediately was drawn in. The characterisation of the four friends is so razor sharp, it is easy to envisage them in a reader’s mind’s eye. After that twist with the arrival of Jo, my interest in this intrigue is so piqued I will be pre-ordering the full book once I have finished this review. Given that I have never ready any Kathy Lette, I will likely also be hunting down any back catalogue to add to my teetering TBR.
It is such interesting extract tho, it also has interesting genre and theme that I usually love to read. But I can not say more than that because it is only an extract but I will definitely check this out in the future when the book is out or when the netgalley open the access to read the arc,
Four old friends meet up after many years. Penny is a journalist, Matilda (Tilly) an author, Cressida a contented wife and mother. The three of them have a catch-up while waiting for Jo, the friend who summoned them all. There’s a surprise when she finally arrives! Hard to see where the book’s going from the extract I was given to read as there’s no indication of who they’re going to get revenge on or why.
A gentle teaser taster sample of what looks like another funny insightful book by Kathy Lette. I cannot wait to order and read the entire book when it is released next year.
Thank you for the extract of The Revenge Club - Wow this might be one of the best first chapters I’ve ever read?! I NEED TO READ ON!!

I enjoyed this cute story. The plot was good. I’ll probably re read this one down the road. The characters were adorable.
I really enjoyed this first chapter. I’m definitely curious as to where the story is going. The main characters all seem very likeable. I enjoyed the writing style, I think this is going to be a great book, and one to look out for.
This review is based on an EXTRACT ONLY, provided by the publisher for feedback through Netgalley:
The premise of this book seems an interesting one and I was curious to see what form the titular revenge would take: mischievous pranks or vicious murder á la 'Strangers on a Train'. Unfortunately, I still don’t know – as soon as the word ‘revenge’ is brought up we meet our extract’s cliffhanger. Tonally, I would guess it’s the former as the book seems too light for a thriller (or even a dark comedy).
Unfortunately, I don’t feel invested enough in the characters to find out more. The women are all stunningly beautiful, incredibly successful, witty, and shrouded in what appears to be false modesty. Perhaps they will be fleshed out later on but, based on first appearances alone, this felt like a meeting of Mary Sue’s. They lacked the substance I crave from a story of scorned, female anger. (This says nothing about the teasing of a trans character who is {not really a spoiler alert} not trans but just masquerading for revenge).
In line with this, our narrator crams the introduction full to bursting with quips - one of which did earn a real, out-loud chuckle from me. But, overall, it seemed to be trying too hard to set up a tone of feminist wit rather than the actual story. The first several lines all fight over each other to decide which one of them is the funniest in an almost smug fashion, but none of them end up saying much of anything at all.
Of course, it's hard to formulate a balanced and justified opinion based on the first handful of pages alone, so please take this review with a pinch of salt. The characters and the humour were not to my taste – but taste is subjective. Moreover, a great hindrance and benefit of extracts is that they’re only a short insight - if you’re at all interested it’s worth requesting this extract on Netgalley and taking fifteen minutes of your time to try it for yourself.
I need more! Very well written and I’m intrigued.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for this extract.
My thanks to Aria & Aries for an extract via NetGalley of ‘The Revenge Club’ by Kathy Lette.
Well from this brief extract this tale of four friends: Matilda, Penny, Cressida and Jo looks like it will be a great deal of fun.
Now in their mature years, each of the women are being confronted by the reality that they are considered past their ‘amuse-by dates’. So they band together to get a little revenge.
From what is presented it looks like Kathy Lette is taking no prisoners and I will be on the lookout for the full eARC or book when published.
Give me more! Even though I knew this was only an excerpt, I kept hoping for one more chapter. I’m not giving anything away but Jo? “Why the hell are you living as a man?” “One word…Revenge.” Four women, once friends and bandmates (there’s a story there, I’m sure) reconnect for lunch. Matilda is a mystery novelist, Cressida an actor and mother of four, Penny has a daytime interview show and Jo is out for revenge. That’s it. That’s the teaser and it’s a 5 star one. I just hope I’m on the list for what happens next.
Thank you to NetGalley, Aria and Aries and Kathy Lette for this ARC.
I really enjoyed this, the writing is fast and witty and it really opens up as a book that's going to be a real tickler of a read. I hadn't realised when I requested it that it was only an extract, may not have requested it if I had spotted this, but top marks for the short selected passages - it's going to be a fab read.
A delightfully funny extract and if the full book is as good then it's a sure-fire winner! Full of Kathy Lette's wicked humour and witty puns it's setting up the story beautifully. Can't wait for the full read.
Absolutely loved this excerpt. The narrative voice was so strong and powerful and I adored the humour. I can't wait to read the rest!
Kathy at her usual unimitable best - the plot sounds intriguing, the protagonists fascinating. Can‘twait to read the rest of this book, hopefully as an ARC please?
I absolutely love whatever Kathy Lette writes. Its hilarious, light, cheeky and sexy. She never fails to disappoint,I just wish I had the entire book to read! A guaranteed good read!
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me an early excerpt in return for an honest review!
The first few chapters of this book are quite funny, the menopause joke is a bit old. Four former college friends meet up in their 50s, summoned unexpectedly by Jo. There's a surprising twist. I'm interested in reading more.
An alright teaser for the whole novel but I did not like the author writing a situation with the women perceiving one of their former friends as trans only for it to be revealed that the character changed their whole appearance and demeanor to a different gender for revenge. I therefore won't be reading the full novel.
